FYI In the US 993’s are a lot more expensive than 964’s. They’ll keep on climbing since they’re the last of the air cooled cars. Regarding the driving experience if you drive the 911 3.2 it will feel more raw than a 964. At the end of the day, the 993 is overall a better car than the 964, it’s called evolution !! You can’t go wrong with either one !!

Good point about "good" vs "polluted" steering feel. I think what a lot of people mistake for steering feel is actually just vibrations from the engine being transmitted through the subframe and into the steering rack. With front wheel drive, forget about any sort of pure steering feel.

That’s my friend’s car. He sold it to your friend a few months ago. We went to many car shows with our 993s and had some great times. Mine was a polar silver 993 Carrera (1994 pre-Varioram). By the way, the Varioram mechanism can stick, affecting power, particularly at low revs. Worth looking at that first. I hear your friend has spent some serious money on it. Good to hear it’s continuing to be looked after as well as it was before. I have a manual 997 turbo now in meteor grey. My friend is still thinking about which 911 to get next!

That car appears to have metallic paint, 18” wheels, Cruise, rear wiper and looks like the rare A/C option. Most 993’s were quite basically spec’d. You are very right about classic prices too. The bubble has definitely burst! Escort Cosworth owners in the clouds: Take note.

A 997 C2s is on the top of my list but will be having a good look at 993 prices when the time comes as I didn't realise these were similar money of late. This is Arena Red with Cashmere inside - I do like it was the Turbo Twists and these are genuine ones which I would suggest were ordered on the car. I normally think the Cup II’s are normally best on a narrow-bodied car but the twists work with on this car. He could a bargain at £30K even if that windscreen rust is most of a deal than you made out - a costly enough repair. The suspension is also M030 rather than M090. Great video as usual - I’m just a 993 nerd!

But the offset driving position gave me backache after an hour and at stupid speeds the steering got very light. Wanted a 911 for 30 years at the time ,got rid after 18 months. Hello Jack, I think that by now you’ve probably scratched the air cooled itch pretty thoroughly. It would feel like going over old ground. Because the 993 is relatively refined some owners seem to want to beef them up changing the exhaust, the wheels, flywheel etc to have something more like an RS. Having said that I would love a more aggressive 993 and would love to see where you might take it as a project. You obviously love to get creative and knowing as much as you do about the breed, I think that the 993 would be a brilliant car to devlop.

Hello Jack. Another wonderful and tortured video. I had a 993 (1995 OBD1) and it was the best car I've ever owned...across the board...tracking it dead stock, wild midnight rides...more than any Alfa, more than my 308...my 993 was the best. And while the 964 had the "classic" 911 line, the 993 captures the entire history of Porsche...they are all there in the 993 lines, from the early 356 all the way to the 997. My 964 was an RS America...and to be honest it was a truck because it didn't have power steering. The Euro Carrera RS did, but the American version didn't because of differences in how they cut weight. The rear suspension of the 993 was the perfect solution to all the tail happy tales of the 911. The engine in my 95 993 was 272 hp vs 247 for the RS America. The 1996 993 you drove in this video is harder to get past emissions because of the OBD2 (at least that is what we have in the US). I'm very very happy with my 996.1 C4...but nothing will take the place of the 993. Yes it is heavier than the 996, and the 996 is cheaper to maintain, but the 993 is every so perfectly slightly smaller and purer in lines, and with no bean counter compromises. Mine was Riviera Blue and it came with the original 16" wheels. And they were the absolute best for real world roads, and it made the car more fun to fling around. Like an idiot trend follower I sold those and put on the 17" and they were better on the track...but for canyon carving and freeways and driving in the rain and everything else, Porsche had it right to go with the 16s. Today, everything gets overtired to absurd points. If I could have my 993 back, I'd never ever let it go again. And that is why you probably should not get one, at least if you need the turnover for your videos. But if you are looking for a real long term keeper that will make you smile every single time you drive it, in fact you'll smile every time you just look at it...then the 993 is the way to go. I love Alfas and Fredo is fun...and the V6 has an amazing sound...but it isn't a great car and the money could be better spent. The alternative to the 993 (in my opinion) is the early 1998/1999 996.1. You may have already considered and rejected them (as you once did the 993)...but they would truly be an affordable Porsche to tune and tweak and play with (with great performance). Sell Fredo, get a 996 (must be the 996.1) and ideally keep Influenzo until you truly feel finished with it. A joy watching your videos.

It’s two and a half years later and 993s got even much more expensive. I was looking at 993s this year here in Switzerland and the cheapest was 40k pounds that was crashed (was sold after 2 days on the market), next is 45k totally rusty example with 200k miles that needs 30-40k togeit into a decent conditin. A few weeks one extremely nice spec 993 4 for 50k came up I bought it the next day. It wouldn’t last long on the market, used car dealers would take immediately but the owner would luckily only sell to a private enthusiast. Those 993 in decent condition go now for minimum 60-70k and those with recent mechanical/engine restoration work for 80k+ I am talking about manual coupe only.

Hi Jack, great New Year's "test". I have a 1/18th scale model of aa 993 turbo in amethyst with obvs turbine wheels on, its one of my faves. I like the look of it too, I'm sort of the opposite of you n prefer 993 look to 964. I also think that the current new 911 takes its styling from the 993 especially with the rear wraparound lights. As the generations go on its derriere gets fatter and fatter too, it would have been a great comparison to park Stuarts next to a brand new one. It would be sad to see influenzo go, but I haven't really warmed to the Alfa, whilst it looks nice and sounds alot better its a pity it couldn't be swapped for a 993, though I appreciate you're not made money and you need a daily drive too, to that end its such a shame for costs that pepe couldn't have stayed. The 993 is certainly an option for you, whether it's as charismatic as a 308 I'm not sure, I always think of 355s and "goldeneye", but not as charming as a 308 or 328. You have certainly set us all a nice conundrum! Best wishes for 2021. Be careful. Ben 🚍🚌😷🇬🇧❄️☃️

964 for life Jack - don't mind a 993 but as you said 964s were the last 911 looking shape. 80% different to a G series but still could not confuse it for anything but a 911.

I bought a 993 c2 with 180k for 18 grand 20 years ago: -drove it everywhere, tracked the hell out of it... Wish I would've have sold it. For the power issue: the belt that spins the second distributor might have broken, you can test it by pulling the coil wires one at a time and trying to start it.

Is the Busso better than the Ferrari V8? I saw a Ferrari 412 advertised at 28k the other day in need of recommissioning - I assume that's probably a bit more Ratarossa?

I had one of these about 4 years ago. Mine was a manual coupe, with varioram engine and the earlier gearbox, went very well. I was running it alongside my 348TS. Contrary to the popular folklore of german cars not rusting much, they absolutely did and do rot, just in areas that you don't see! I would say it was equally prone to rust as my Italian car. Go onto the model specific forums and you will see pictures of how badly they can rot. I'm not sure I agree with the 'suggestion' in the title here that they can be had for £30k....good luck with that. Your friend is indeed very lucky if there is any truth in £30k for that car. Whilst I agree you could get a 993 for that price, it would likely be one of the ones that stay on ebay forever as they are either a cabrio, high mileage, tiptronic, or all three, with other price reducing 'issues'. I don't think those of us out here in the real (non youtuber) world would get a manual, coupe with less than 100k and no issues for 30k. What you will find is the typical 'can't find my service paperwork' or Cat x, y z, or colour changes, or things like a totally wrong rear GT blah blah blah spoiler (in reality because the cars had a rear end shunt and it was too expensive to put it back to factory).

Unsure you can say it “doesn’t have the 911 silhouette! Jeez, it’s the most beautiful incarnation of the 911 and definitely doesn’t look like anything other than a 911! Total perfection and the natural progression from the 964 which somewhat archaic and agricultural. Yes, I do have a 993 before you say! I enjoy your videos but I’ve never heard anyone say it’s not a 911 silhouette!

The 993 had to be a great buy for this price! And for the project perhaps replacing Influenzo? I'd maybe say a 968 CS. A friend of mine restores one right now, it is half finished and when i drove it last time ( engine was revisited, but not yet suspension) i could feel it hides somewhat great driving potential . They aren't cheap, but maybe a project car can make a unique content.

An air cooled 911 would be great, although I am particularly biased as I’m working on one now. Actually, the ‘69 Triumph TR6 is in my garage at the moment about to have its pistons pulled out for re-ringing. But that probably is not exotic enough (unless you live in the states 😉). I enjoy the carbureted Ferrari content. If you offload the influenzo, another Ferrari would be great!

Hello Jack, I think the price is a fair value, I have been looking for one for a while now, (Canada and U.S.) and this particular car is priced right, for starters it has 120k miles, that's close to 200k kilos.Over 200k kilos, cars really start to depreciate, even, should I say it? (a 911, oh, I feel the wrath). Can't see why you think its such a good deal though, considering the mileage and condition, this will have to have an engine job in the not to distant future, (my guess 10k Pounds), and other upgrades. Prices are pretty constant for these, ie. if you find one of these cars at 40k miles expect to pay double what this car has been bought for. Just my considerable opinion, ha, ha. Love your videos.

The 993 was always a great looker & 30k is a major bargain for a manual Mo suspension car when you see the prices of a Turbo Version and the convertible tiptronics are plentiful at 25k too.

I think you should try a water cooled 911. Possibly an early 996 for their reasonable prices and they make excellent project cars. Then again you can pick up high mileage 997's pretty cheap and they're superb 911's!

I saw my first 993 turbo in that colour and thought Porsche just can’t improve on that. I was right, they changed the whole evolution concept with the total redesign of the 996, which I hated when it first came out. I saw a turbo with a twin rear spoiler and it was the first time I liked the 996. But being water cooled, just didn’t seem like a 911.

It's interesting to hear you talk about the 993 back in the day and how you took a dislike to them because they attracted the price appreciation crowd. I feel the same way about the 991 R.....and I heard Porsche took a dislike to the type of buyers it attracted so they made the GT3 Touring 🤣
