somehow that MAJOR mistake at 8:36 was so obvious but it didn't sound wrong...that's just impressive

Jazmyn Morgan it's confidence. If you sound good, even if it's wrong, it's not detrimental to the perfprmance.

there is a certain shrillness and hollowness to the sound of Eastern European and European oboists unlike the centered and full sound of American oboists especially the old oboists from the 50s 60s 70s in 80s. examples would be listening to Ralph gomberg Harold gomberg and Ray still to name a few.

I have much respect to the names mentioned. But as a eastern european oboist I must say that most of american oboists including todays stars as Izotov , Wang or Woodhams sound the same dull american sound . Yes, the europeans sound brighter and thinner as does the short scraped reed against the long scraped. But listen to Abbuhl, Mayer, Leleux, Kelly - they play more expressive, colourful and much more individual.

As a Gomberg student, I love that sound. To me it is stable and pure. Far from dull. To me it is rich. Having said that I think the stability in the American school of playing can limit musical expression. I want it ALL!

@@Skvertven The American oboists you mentioned were not Tabateau students like Gomberg etc. I don’t compare the modern oboists to the former. There is one correct embouchure and Tabateau taught it is why his students held principal positions in the major US orchestras. Other embouchures work enough but don’t have the control or sound. The diaphragm is the other important player and many oboists fail in this area as well. In conclusion, many people play the oboe but very few are outstanding. I’ve heard dozens and many are just mediocre. Often one cannot hear them above a mezzo forte in a an orchestral tutti. Listen to Ralph Gomberg play Le Tambeau de Couperin if you can find it. You’ll hear the difference. I listened to many oboe students at Tanglewood over the years which has given me the opinions I have stated. There are many doctors of surgery but very few attain the highest reputation. No need for a debate here as I only share my experience. Thank you
