    Ken...THANK YOU for tapping into the SCIENCE of photography, because as we all SHOULD KNOW it’s art AND science...that’s an indisputable FACT! I’m a military electronics technician and when you started touching on wave propagation the connections started buzzing! 😜. Keep it up! 👌🏽🤙🏽👍🏽

    Ken; Thanks for all the pertinent information. Just one small thing wattage is not a measure of light output it is a measure of power consumption. i.e. a 40 watt fluorescent tube put out as many lumens as 100 watt incandescent bulb.

    I’d like to start off by saying it’s really admirable to see you offer essential and out of the ordinary photography equipment. Further more, I’d like to also be considered for your give away. I feel as if I need any of the two items given away because a little over a year ago I hit financial struggle which culminated from losing my job and having my roommate move out. I was forced to sell my camera equipment. St the time I was shooting with Sony and vintage prime lenses. Fast forward to a month ago, I was finally able to purchase a camera again. I am now shooting with a grey Fuji XT1 and a Albinar 28mm Lens. Regardless of who you choose as the winner of your give away, I’d still like to acknowledge that what you are doing is admirable and selfless. I look forward to your future videos.

    Of course speed light photography is superior. Simply because you’re in control of the light. However, as the key word is control, that control will take some time to learn and understand. Thanks for yet another good video, Ken.

    Who uses flashes directly on the subject? The majority of people I know of use light modifiers that make the flash more diffuse, so it's no longer a point source.

    Don Sullivan: I don't know about digital medium format shutters, but my old Bronica 6x7 film camera used a leaf shutter in the lens. I would have thought the same was true for modern digital medium format cameras?...but it would solve the problem.

  • @AnandaGarden

    A shutter is not a single current that falls - think of it as two curtains with an open slit between them through which light passes to the sensor. For a medium-format with a bigger sensor, the slit has to fall farther in order to expose each area of the sensor for 1/125 second. So your shaky hands have a lot longer time in which to jiggle and create blur.

    @@AnandaGarden yeah but once that special technology that will make it possible to expose the entire sensor instantly sensor size will no longer matter when it comes to camera shake.

    As much as I want to agree, I will disagree. Yes flash gives better tonality in many cases, but the real question is DO WE ACTUALLY WANT the better tonality in our images? What are we trying to achieve through the image? Are we trying to beautify reality, or create a vision based on reality? Do our eyes see the way a camera with a flash strobe does? No. In many cases we want our subject to have natural illumination, because we want to recreate an organic look. Flaws can be beautiful.

  • @kenavery8144
    @kenavery81446 жыл бұрын

    It is not obvious that flash is always superior/better, I will agree that flash gives a specific exposure at a particular aperture for a given distance. Given this scope, there are particular desirable outcomes that are facilitated using flash; though, this is only one tool in many for obtaining a particular outcome. Possibly, you could narrow the scope of application to were the use of flash is superior, I can think of many where flash is not an option; let alone, better or superior. For example, just about every photograph taken by Ansel Adams.

    yeah, the radio comment is not entirely true - you can bounce shortwaves off the ionosphere during the night (it acts as metal surface) which would allow you to cover things behind the horizon without going to extreme powers. Also, there are amateur radio bands in this range.

    So called "superiority" of flash light is badly defined. Also flash light photography being "double exposure" is irrelevant and is usually not beneficial at all. So, no secrets revealed here, just a bit weird opinions mixed with some misunderstandings of physics.
