A Phonetics Class with a Difference
It turns out one of my youngest students has a particular talent for uvular trills - the sound of the French R. It's good to see that the family tradition of a love of phonetics is continuing.

Hi everyone. I hope you enjoy this -- the first grandad/grandson collaboration on my channel. I'm so glad that Zayne shares my love of phonetics and exotic speech sounds.
I look forward to more from Zayne. Inspired.
This is adorable

Thank you! More on the way.
This is so funny 🤣
I lost you at 0.56. Your demo sounds like a French 'rr'. Mine sounds like someone gargling! How does one get the actual 'r' sound? Someone told me to do it with water in my mouth, do you recommend that?
Funny My native tongue is Somali. You should try a lesson on that. Very interesting language. You will find that it sits between the Arabic, Cushitic languages and Ancient Egyptian

Thank you. Yes, I intend to make a video about Somali at some point.
I did try but it made me retch. Trying to make this sound in French lessons as a boy would always end in fits of laughter. I think the reason 80% of us failed our o level French was just these ridiculous sounds. If we'd been allowed to pronounce everything in an English dialect 80% of us would have passed, I have no doubt about that. Wonderful video, mate.
