A personal air-quality tracker that lets you know what you're breathing | Romain Lacombe

How often do you think about the air you're breathing? Probably not enough, says entrepreneur and TED Fellow Romain Lacombe. He introduces Flow: a personal air-quality tracker that fits in your hand and monitors pollution levels in real time. See how this device could help you track and understand pollution street by street, hour by hour -- and empower you to take action to improve your health.

I think you can use it to influence your decision-making. When looking for a nice restaurant to eat where you can sit outside, walking by a restaurant knowing that the traffic causes a horrible air-quality, might influence your decision on where to eat. Not sitting in polluted air for an hour once a week might make a difference. But when you're at home and busy and you're not thinking about letting some fresh air in, the device could warn you. Opening the window for a moment doesn't take much time but could help you over time to be more productive and have more energy over all due to breathing better air. I wouldn't let it rule my life, but it's definitely a device that is suited to have you reflect on your daily routines and improve them. If used correctly.

@@crazyprayingmantis5596 Not knowing, does not make "doing nothing about it" any different. You just know one way and you refuse to confront the truth the other. That's the only difference. No implications about what your actions resulting the new knowledge should be. Calling something stupid, because you see no use for it, only shows a very egocentric view, while the straw-man-fallacy is only used by those who want to ridicule an idea, because they don't feel confident enough to tackle it. And yes, I'm aware that pointing out fallacies is also a fallacy, but in this case it's the main reason why I won't argue this topic anymore. No reason to debate an ego.

I hope it catches on. With environmental sensitivities and asthma on the rise, it would empower a lot of people with data to help but also make others understand that lower levels of exposure affect them. Just cause you're not choking doesn't mean it isn't affecting your health. Having a detector would help prevent but also 'make real' to those who don't suffer what affected people experience.

Some years ago there were quite a few crowdfundings for devices to test air/food/water/products/etc. for toxic materials, and ever since I wished they would become a commonplace reality (though I haven't really kept up with them). I hope we'll be successful in getting rid of all the pollution that surrounds us, to spite all of the industries that rely on them to make a buck.

I think microscale sensors like this one can make a major contribution to raising public awareness, building up or supporting air pollution maps, improving city planning and ultimately health care. Nonetheless, the air pollution map at 2:18 already shows that it can be quite hard to "change personal habits" to circumvent pollution. Except for a few green oasis here and there to breathe up and to think of the "good old times" before industrialisation and urbanization. In a nutshell, beside more and more (high tech, high resolution, etc.) mapping of pollution, we may have to focus much more on its prevention - on all scales (such as by using greener technologies or changing our consume). Hi Matthieu! The data access you mentioned are for businesses or institutions that wish to have more granular, tailored-fit data and dashboards using our API. For the public, we have a live air pollution map available to everyone for free - and we have worked really hard over the past year on upgrades and new features to make it our best version so far! :) Check out the live map or download the Plume Labs app here: Live Air Pollution Map (Website): air.plumelabs.com/en/? Google Play: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plumelabs.air&hl=en& Apple Store: apps.apple.com/us/app/plume-labs-air-quality-app/id950289243? Thank you very much and hope this helped!

It's great he talks about global change and using their device to monitor and contribute the data they need. Want he hasn't said is that the device will cost you $180. Meaning the only people who can afford it are westerners (and not many of them), whereas it is in countries like China or India that this is most needed now and it's priced out of range. So not so much Global change really, just much of the same information almost every western city already has at its disposal. Except now you can buy a device that cost's a lot and makes them money to ease your western sense of guilt.

Just giving them a buy to continue polluting as long as the people, not other living things, are upwind. Pollution must end in total. Good idea but is only vanity for the rich.

How do we stop the chemtrails that are being sprayed by planes/ jets. That can change things constantly. Thanks for your efforts, but, we need to stop the oligarchs from destroying our lives with their chemical weapons. No one seems to be addressing this issue. I don't think it's impossible. The very accurate Purple Air II particulate sensor isn't much bigger and that uses sensor modules with active fans to draw in air samples. There are more compact sensors that only use thermal updraft effects to accomplish the same thing, although their accuracy suffers a bit. The rest of the chemosensors are just tiny little canisters that could easily fit in a tubular form-factor like that. The bad part is that those sensors have a limited lifespan before they're eventually "poisoned" by other elements that cause the readings to drift. Unless they make those sensors modular and replaceable, this is yet another e-waste ticking time bomb.
