This show deserved so many more Tony nominations . It is almost criminal it didn't get nominations for both of these performers and best musical.

I saw it on opening night, and respectfully, I disagree. It was a decent show but not one deserving of critical acclaim given its many flaws. I don't know why it's so hard to adapt the source material as the period piece it is. Whether it's this musical adaptation or Baz Luhrmann's 2013 film, everyone who touches this property seems to think that it needs modernization. F. Scott Fitzgerald coined the term "the Jazz Age". Why then is it so hard to root the story in period-appropriate jazz numbers instead of bombastic romantic duets? For me, a fan of musicals and of classic literature, it took me completely out of the story. The romantic fling between Jordan and Nick, the complete bulldozing over the novel's many subtleties (e.g., Meyer Wolfsheim making explicitly clear that Gatsby is a bootlegger when it's only ever implied in the novel, the symbolism of the green light and the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg),and the Bob Fosse-esque choreography in "When the Party's Over", all of these cheapened the show. I will give credit to the excellent costume, production design, and a handful of clever songs ("Secondhand Suit" comes to mind), but I also noticed a lot of problems that diluted the overall quality.

@@gottasing7 Yes, he’s never done that before! They’re both usually singing together on that line but he left it to her and did his own thing there. Unless they changed the music since last week which I highly doubt now that the show is open and half the album is recorded, including this song. Love it!! ❤️

​@stayonezy5570 yes! I knew I'd heard both versions. I saw it at Papermill & Bway previews. Love both ways, but there is something super special about this performance. To nail it so perfectly, both of them, on late night TV when you only get one shot, is just astounding. Incredible.

It’s fun to imagine this may be people’s first time experiencing the magic of Jeremy Jordan.

This was truly one of the greatest performances I have ever seen on The Tonight Show

Jeremy & Eva are such an amazing duo 💕. But man, Jeremy’s vocal throws & a little vocal cry on “Sometimes it’s winking, sometimes it’s warning” flows so perfectly well at 0:32 ❤️.

4:00 Jeremy’s voice reverberating towards the end…the mesh between his and eva’s voice…just WOW! Just pure awe! Inspiring, spectacular!

This show deserves more awards. Periodt.

I’ve never actually heard the first verse with just Gatsby, makes the song a lot better from a storytelling perspective imo. Also that riff at “everywheeeere” has to be my favorite part

@@simplysteph_ The cut-off was April 25, making it eligible for this year. Lindo Cho was nominated for Best Costume Design in a Musical.

@@mjmatousek yes, but usually for lead roles they need more than one month (because of eligibility requirements) to accept deadlines and they also don't count previews even if it was the same cast

I just made the connection back to Smash! At the end of the second season Debra Messing and Christian Borle’s characters acquired the rights to make The Great Gatsby into a Broadway musical. Jeremy Jordan was in the second season. And it was on NBC! I’m still bitter it was cancelled!
