Great song. Great reaction. You guys need to dabble in Puscifer as well. The diversity of Maynard in these 3 bands is remarkable. Especially in Puscifer, they range from rock, hip hop, blue grass(literally banjos on a song), industrial and comedy. And his vocals with Carina Round are absolutely incredible.

that crescendo eruption (about 8:20 into this vid but 3:30 in song) is one of my favourite moments in music ever. still remember the whole body goosebumps first time i heard it as a teen. i'm a fan of all maynard's work, but this album (and song in particular) was monumentally impactful for baby me. i didn't get the recovery angle as a kid, but was drowning in religious trauma, so interpreted the lyrics in that context. 'your halo slipping down to choke you now' felt directed at the abusive, hypocritical church leaders in my life. that's the powerful and personal part about art; how we can interpret our own meaning. so stoked to see your reaction to this song.

Yes, as a life long Tool enthusiast from the beginning I know that most of us loved APC when they came out. Having said that, as an SP/Iha and overall APC enthusiast, I still like the first APC album better than anything and it doesn't have Iha. I do like later APC albums, but nothing even comes close to Mer De Noms. Also, as a recovering addict (20+ years of active addiction and now 12+ years of being clean) I do absolutely love 13th Step. @@Greatmeasures Thank you very much. I've been through a lot of crap in my life, but nothing as tough as staying clean. I don't care what anyone says, it's a daily battle and I think about getting high every day, but I weigh the pros and cons every time I think about it and luckily have made the right choice for a long while now. Lucky to have a loving support system now (wife and kids) which is something I rarely had before I met my wife. I was in NA for a long time and know the process and steps very well, but I stopped going because I can't even do the first step without lying to myself and my fellow addicts and so I stopped going altogether (not one to be a hypocrite), but I still talk to people in the groups when it gets really bad and my wife is not around. Sorry for letting it all out, but reminiscing about this album tends to bring it out...

My best friend bought this album for me while I was in a long-term program in a rehab. Needless to say it struck a chord. In the program (NA, AA, etc) the thirteenth step is dating and or having sex with other addicts in the program. I don't necessarily thing thats what Maynard was referring to though. Been clean since 2006 and still put this album on and reminisce. Honestly the time in that program was some of the best in my life to this day. Made good friends (and lost more) and had a really great job. Damn I miss those days and the people who unfortunately couldn't fight those demons.

J, your commentary is spot on for a lot of us Maynard fans. Tool hits the head, APC hits the heart (and Puscifer hits the dick 🤣) This song is one of my top favs from APC. My interpretation of it personally is extremely dark. My mom passed when I was 11 (she was a pianist, private voice/piano teacher and HS choir director) and my child self still deals with blaming myself for it though I didn’t know she was sick a for a time and couldn’t help more back then. The halo is a ring of guilt to me. The stranger off this album hits very close too. Mom’s been dead for 27 years and I’ve addictions for years as a result of poor coping. I haven’t ever been able to listen from an addict’s pov…time’s a coming. Thank you both.

This is my second favorite Perfect Circle song next to 3 Libras. I never thought I'd be watching you cover this.

Funny to see what everyone’s fav Maynard band/song is. My all time fav song ever ever is Passive. I just love his vocals and the lyrics. I know it’s not most people’s fav…but that growl that he does in Passive?? Oof. So damned good.

I love Tool but APC is my favorite of Maynards bands. It feels more emotional to me which I love in music.

Really enjoyed this one. APC is one of my favorite bands. One of my favorite newer songs is "Feathers" I think it's vastly underappreciated as the newer album wasn't regarded as highly as the first two records

Tool wins in my heart but, man, A Perfect Circle is incredible. Maynard is a true master in composition, a master in singing, and in APC you can see even more of him. "3 Libras", "The Package" are my absolutely favorite from them.

Second reaction of APC who knew what the 13th step was. Absolutely love it. My father is a recovering alcoholic and, if I had to guess, took the 13th step more than once or twice. Hence, I was familiar with its meaning by early Jr High. When this came out in early high school, I couldn't help but laugh at the title. Great reactions you guys are doing.

I can remember the first time I heard this album. Where I lived the rock station had a program on Sunday called “the 7th day”. And on that program they played 7 whole albums back 2 back 2 back…. One Sunday night right after this came out, they played this. I listened the whole album. This is the first song, so I kinda just got transported back. This whole album was meant to be played front to back. It’s a masterpiece, imo.

Masterful album, plain and simple! Also, anything you could do from their Stone and Echo Live performance at Red Rocks would be awesome!

What an incredible song. I've always wondered if Maynard deliberately came in on that crescendo @3.33 "With Your Halo Slipping...." , as a nod, firstly to the Trinity, being the third minute of the song, and also 33 obviously representing the age Christ died. Considering he's a little curious, and angry, as to how his God is going to make amends to the dead. Maynard being Maynard, he must have known this.
