A Part of Malaysia Most Tourists Don't Know About 🇲🇾 Ipoh, Perak

Today we are exploring a part of Malaysia most tourists don't know about. We are in Ipoh, which is a charming town in northwestern Malaysia that has an exciting food, culture and art scene. Ipoh is getting more attention now that CNN recently rated it as one of the most underrated places in Asia. We absolutely agree with that statement and we even feel that we could live here!

In that case, then most Malaysians are polyglots eg many Malaysian Chinese can speak English, Malay, and Mandarin. In addition to that, some can also speak Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien, Teochew etc..And that isn't even mentioning the Indians who may speak Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Urdu etc.... 🤔 And of course, there's Arabic too for the Malays

Famous and best foods here are in Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands with much variety, Ipoh, Melaka and Penang. These are must go places for food. Of course , also the beaches but those are situated at islands nearby. Enjoyed your videos.

Love the three lanes hope you visited each one and maybe more video on it? But probably moving on lol. I’m always here for ALL of it! That pomelo looks delish, and I’m not a big fan of grapefruit-I have to put spoonfuls of sugar to defeat the bitterness. But that looks unique and I’d want to try it. Soup looked scrumptious too. Hi Flora & Note, FYI, the reason Ipoh coffee is known Ipoh White Coffee not because of the milk but the technique of roasting the beans. Ipoh white coffee is beige because of its distinctive roasting, brewing and stirring techniques. In Malaysia, “white coffee” just means a lighter colour of the roast. Compared to the traditional Malaysian black coffee roasted with margarine and sugar, the white coffee is roasted only with margarine gives it a lighter colour. We have to best aromatic coffee. I grew up drinking it as a kid. Kopi O= Black coffee with sugar unless you say 'no sugar' , Kopi =Coffee, condensed milk n sugar. Next visit you both should visit, Thean Chun and Khong Heng for the home made caramel custard, satay, chee cheong fun(local cheong fun) and blanched cuttlefish and water spinach served with special sauce. Enjoy Ipoh😁

I just started watching your KZread channel, and I love both of you. You are a very sweet and beautiful couple. I can see why people are welcoming to both of you. You're so positive and receptive to other cultures and food. ❤❤❤❤ I have been to Ipoh, lots of good delicious food and pretty spots.

Ipoh is also known as "Pah Lo" among the Chinese Malaysians...a city well known for its cuisine and natural attractions like limestone hills and caves. Great that you both enjoyed the "kai si hor fun", white coffee with toasts, egg tart and the famous Tambun pomeloes. That candy floss was too beautiful to be "destroyed" 😂🤓 Don't forget to go for the famous "nga choi kai"( bean sprouts chicken ) salt baked chicken and a few well known pastries. I have a good laugh where Flora broke the stalk of that pomelo 😂🤣😂🤣

Ipoh is divided into Old Town and New Town by the Kinta river. Be sure to explore both. If you still in Ipoh on Sunday morning, you can visit the Memory Lane flea market for some nostalgic shopping!

I’m constantly shocked at how many people speak Cantonese in Malaysia .. reminds me of old Chinatown here in Vancouver while growing up and heading down on the weekends.. hearing the distant chatter is calming to the soul 🙏🙏

Chinese who came to Malaysia more than 100 years ago were mostly Cantonese & Hokkien, some Hakka & Teochew and other ethnics too. But these days the younger generations here rarely speak Cantonese & Hokkien anymore especially in big cities like KL & Penang. They mostly only speaks Mandarin, which is sad to see them not knowing their mother tongue.

Ipoh have various dialects groups besides Cantonese like the Hokkiens, Hakkas, Hock Chews, Hainanese and others. I am Hokkien, I grew up speaking my dialect mixed with English and bahasa. Watching TVB Cantonese shows and speaking with my classmates and vendors really helps my Cantonese. Sadly, the younger generation mostly speaks Mandarin now, hardly uses Cantonese. 😕 I still use Cantonese to speak to the vendors. Older vendors loves when young people speak their dialect.

@@owlilian28 the world is big but closing in on one another and so unfortunately mother tongues are being lost and in some cases become extinct .. I had the opportunity as a youth to learn but being north americanized, I played more than I learned .. fortunately, I have the opportunity everyday to learn what I didn’t including various dialects so keep up the good work of placing smiles on the elders of the community 🙏🙏

Ipoh and the nearby towns are Cantonese speaking, with pockets of Hakka speakers in some areas. Likewise with Kuala Lumpur. However, towns in northern and southern part of peninsular Malaysia are Hokkien speaking.

I visit Ipoh some 40 years ago. I. speak Cantonese, Chaozhou, Huayu, English, and also Laotian (on extension, Thai?). That came easy to me, as I was born in Chaozhou, lived in Vientiane, Laos in my childhood, then went over to Hong Kong to study and work, in between to Australia to get my tertiary education, and now retire in Singapore. Now, seeing and learning more about Malaysia.
