My dad served aboard Mt. Vernon. He was an engineman 2nd class when the ship was torpedoed. In 1974 he quoted a 17-stanza poem written by the ships Chaplin regarding the attack. ⚙⚙⚙

I'd be interested in this poem, if you still have it.

I just gave my son the very same original photograph of the Mt. Vernon and it's crew. By grandfather is in that picture (he's circled in the photo) and it now hangs on the wall at my son's (f4th generation) home. I know all about this ship and my grandfather's time aboard it. Grandpa LaCombe was aboard when it was torpedoed.

A fascinating story! What a crew to have not only made it through all of that, but to succeed in the mission despite it all.

My great grandfather was a Fireman Second Class during this event and commended by this Navy for his actions. I can't imagine the hell he and his shipmates went through in addition to his ship being a ferry for the panmic victims. I have the impression from my relatives that he was probably a difficult man, but PTSD wasn't addressed like it is today. Thank you for sharing this story.

Hey Chief, fine job. Great pics and articles. So many times people just throw up pics that they got from who knows where.

I never knew that a crew member of the USS Mount Vernon was a pallbearer for the unknown soldier. Another outstanding presentation of naval history.

Rear Admiral Adolphus Staton, Tarboro-NC, was aboard the ship when it was torpedoed. His first hand account from the bridge of the ship during the attack is stored at UNC Wilson library in the Adolphus Staton papers. What an amazing an amazing story of perseverance.

I’m semi binge watching all your videos, Master Chief. They’re all interesting, and more than one is relevant to the vicissitudes of today. I especially liked the Navy Ceremonial Guard drilling with masks on. The other day someone literally told me they couldn’t wear a mask and chew gum at the same time. I really enjoy your channel, but I have to tell you in this video I think I’ve found a mistake. I believe you mixed up meters and feet when giving the dimensions of the vessel.
