The shield and scroll work from the bow are attached to a monument in Bangor ME, and a gun is on display in a park in Portland ME.

I found a commemorative spoon of the Battleship Maine in an antiques store a few years ago. I believe it is silver plate, as opposed to sterling. In any case, I nice piece of naval history.

You did a great job on the history of the USS Maine. I have a large lithograph of a famous battle in the Spanish American War of the Battle of Manila Bay I recently found in an antique shop. It will go great on display with the Civil War sword I have which belonged to the commander of the second ship of the line in that battle, USS Baltimore just behind admiral Dewey's ship. He likely didn't carry that sword in the Battle of Manila Bay but certainly carried it in the Battle of Mobile Bay when he was on the USS Metacomet attached to the flagship the USS Hartford, Admiral Farraguts ship.

I had a Viewmaster when I was a kid, so I the stereoscopic viewer you mentioned is a descendent of that technology. Used to you could go to department stores or drug stores and buy Viewmaster disc packs. The sample disc I had was The Seven Wonders of the World and a few nature series and TV show discs also. Kids these days think 3-D technology is something of their generation but it's been around for a very long time.

Those early ships were known for their coal bunker fires. I am a retired BT8, and heard an number sea stories about early boiler and coal bunker fires. Today they are all Diesel Turbines or Nuclear

Great video! There are an amazing number of bits of the USS Maine scattered across the country. I ran across one of the 6in guns in Alpena, MI. There are also a large number of memorial plaques that were made from metal recovered from the wreck. I haven't been able to find a solid number, but have seen at least four or five in military memorials in small towns. I was surprised to find a porthole window in a small museum in Eastern Ohio this past summer!

Nice! I like the Span-Am Era! A Spanish doctor who treated a USS Maine survivor in Havana was shocked to see both his eyes were missing from the sockets! Teddy Roosevelt was given a Colt .38 double action revolver that was salvaged from Maine's arms locker and supposedly used it in Cuba. All my stereoscope collection was destroyed in Katrina! Speaking of which, I wonder how I can get a reissue of the discharge paper of my paternal grandfather. The one I had was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. My grandfather was on USS Florida during the 1914 occupation of Vera Cruz and was assigned to Florida's Battalion to patrol the streets. An episode of the Banana Wars! He remarried to a younger woman and died in the early 1950s after my dad and aunt were born.

Master Chief, can I ask about the construction of the chest shown in your videos? Particularly, how much does it weigh (both empty and full if you wish) and what is (estimates are fine) the thickness of the wood? Thanks, we love all your vids.

Thanks Master Chief . There once was a company named Bannerman's that dealt in Military Surplus materiel . One of the offerings in their catalog were Model 1895 6mm Lee -Navy rifles recovered from USS Maine . The M1895 was an uncommon straight-pull bolt action used by the USN and USMC in the Spanish -American War and for some years after . One of these rifles would make a great addition to your collection . P.S. There is a video about the Lee-Navy rifles by Forgotten Weapons . com .

Great detail about a very tragic moment in our history. Thanks. Question for you, have you ever done a video of the USS North Carolina (BB-55)? She had a short active duty life but a awesome history. She was the highest decorated Battleship of WWII. I remember as a kid bringing pennies to school in an effort to bring her home. I'm very proud of her, most people know of Missouri and Iowa but North Carolina had a greater record. Thanks

Definite false flag. Up to that point, American foreign policy was as a neutral nation. Strange, how they reverted to empire building, when Americans fought for independence from the biggest empire of them all.

If I recall, it was most likely either a coal bunker fire or explosion caused by spontaneous combustion of low-grade coal or and/or improper loading of the coal that didn't allow for proper ventilation (don't recall those exact details), which then got to the magazine. A study and a subsequent book was done by Adm. Hyman Rickover (yes, the same Rickover that brought the U.S. Navy into the Nuclear Propulsion world) that did an actual forensic study of the explosion zone and hull structure/plates and determined the entire explosion sequence was caused by an INTERNAL event, not an external one (i.e., the magazine explosion was not started by anything external to the ship - such as a Spanish mine). Again, don't recall all of the details (I read the book like 30 years ago or so...), but conclusion of the study was that the start of the whole sequence was most likely the spontaneous combustion of the coal.

I wish I could recall the source but I recall a revolver, recovered from the USS Maine, that was attributed to a senior officer (the Captain?) that later was supposedly carried into action during the war. Any idea if that is true?

Personally, the greatest memorial to the men of the Maine are those photographs from its early days. Seeing real sailors just being sailors with only a little posing here and there to ensure the photograph didn't blur too much brings more life to these men than any rhetoric or stone monolith.

I picked up a book at the Baseball HOF years ago and it has a photograph of a baseball team made up of sailors from the Maine. One of them was a Black man, and I found it interesting considering how sports teams were largely segregated at that time.
