Funny that you used the word "disaster". The etymology of DISASTER is DIS meaning bad or ill, and ASTER which is star. Together, Dis-Aster essentially means events that are ill-starred or occur under an ill-fated star, which is exactly what our ancestors believed. Did you pick that word intentionally?

time and space are relative so there isn't actually a concurrent "now" between here and the star, so it's true to say that light takes 2628 years to reach us from that star, but sort of meaningless to say that it occurred in 600BC. 600BC was a time period on earth and this event did not interact with earth then, it's interacting with (visible from) earth now in the present

Aww, not a class 1a super-nova. So another few million years until those two cores start to make out and go out with a bang.

Whenever you look at the vast cosmos, you are indeed viewing "the past". However, that's what the majority of humanity can NEVER wrap their heads around: TIME. No, I don't mean solely upon planet Earth. I mean the relevance of Time dozens of LYs away. At that distance, things that happened occurred long ago, but if you could somehow "teleport" there, reality would feel different than whatever you'd previously measured. In other words, you could travel to a star, moon, or planet that was drastically different (or GONE) from whatcha saw through your digital super-telescope. 🤯 Very few individuals I've met over the past 30+ years can comprehend this.

Don't get your hopes too high, it will just look like another star. If you are unfamiliar with the night sky then you probably wouldn't notice the difference. I have heard that it will probably be visible in most light polluted areas though. It'll be about as bright as Polaris, so if you can see that then you should be good.

Your thumbnail images is misleading and incorrect. You are showing the nebula of a supernova remnant. White dwarf novas do not do this. And secondly, saying that a white dwarf is the remnants of a collapsed star is also misleading. A neutron star is the remnant of a collapsed star, but a white dwarf is the core of the star but has not collapsed.

Some of it. T CrB is at +26 degrees declination. At 64 degrees South latitude and further South it never rises above the horizon.

This prediction seems far more likely than the recurring notices of Betelgeuse going nova any day now.

It is about 3000 light years away, which means when we do observe this nova it will have already happened another 37 times if it doesn’t collide or go supernova throwing its neighbour into another trajectory or create a black hole or neutron star first, it is a 82 year nova cycle.

This nova (not supernova) is in Corona Borealis. And Betelgeuse could explode any time between now and 100,000 years. The latest I heard is it had another temporary dimming event, likely ejecting a bunch of dust.

@@ShauriePvs you're missing the point. if BBC is doing a short video for public consumption, in the english language, they should choose to put someone on based on their ability to bring valuable ideas to the table, and to speak clearly. not choose them based on some woke, divisive, DEI bullcrap like gender or race. this is one of the many reasons that public trust in media is at an all time low.

@@michaelgusovsky Perhaps they chose to interview her not because of her race or gender or accent, but because she also happens to be a post-doctorate in astrophysics and has experience studying binary systems such as this one? And I had no issues understanding her accent. No-one is complaining about the other guy with the strongest American accent in the world. If anyone is being divisive I'd say it was people who see race and gender before "post-doc astrophysicist", and see that as a problem.

south asian accent is pretty much understandable, every vowel and consonent is pronounced clearly and soaked up with some other letter as British or American English.

@@shubhnamdeo2865 Oh, boy. It's as "clearly" pronounced as the average German would do, that doesn't make it less irritating to listen to - it's quite the opposite. You can't tell the difference between some words just by listening, only by context - when look sounds like lock and reverse.
