A Net Plus | Giving Discarded Fishing Nets a New Start
Спорт
Discarded fishing nets are one of the most harmful forms of ocean plastic pollution. That’s why we’ve been supporting Bureo in the development of NetPlus®, the fully traceable, 100% recycled fishing net material used for the brim stiffeners in our hats. It’s made from discarded nets collected in fishing communities in Chile and Argentina-a project that benefits fishermen by providing financial incentives and benefits our planet by repurposing 71,000 pounds of waste per year. This is the story of how Bureo locked arms with Patagonia to create a new solution to our oceans’ overwhelming plastic pollution problem. This is just the first step in NetPlus’ integration into Patagonia’s supply chain and the fight against ocean plastics that harm marine life and break down the food chain.

About three years ago I bought a pair of your sunglasses from the Patagonia store in Ventura. I traveled more than 10,000 miles through Mexico and Central America in my sprinter van before selling it to buy my sailboat to sail around the world with my dog. And everyday I wear your sunglasses as a reminder to do my little part to help clean up our oceans and beaches... one trash bag at a time. Great job my friends, great job.

Right on, fair winds!
This whole process and movement has me in tears, I'm so happy there is at least one company making the effort to save the environment and make it standard operating procedure. 😭

I guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my account password. I would love any tips you can give me
Just bought two awesome women’s sized (yay a hat that will actually fit my cabeza pequeña) recycled fishing net and organic cotton hats 🥳 Thank you so much NetPlus, Patagonia and other partners for providing products that are a part of the solution. Vote with your dollars 👏🏽🌎

I swear. The music is exactly like that haha!
Every little step to upcycle plastic reduces waste in oceans! Thanks for social involvement of Patagonia.
Never buying another hat that isn't made this way!
I appreciate the break down of the your process of obtaining the plastic!
Well done. We all must reduce more than 75% of our personal plastic packaging purchases. Even more so with electricity consumption. If we don't buy these destructive conveniences, industry won't produce them. Supply and demand. No demand no supply. Basic.
I have watched a tons of Patagonia videos, this is very fun yet educational.
I hope you guys can team up with The Ocean Cleanup, they work hard to tackle the same problems with fishing nets and other plastics.
Turning garbage into gold. Patagonia, the real alchemists.
Viva Chile 🇨🇱 ♥️ I'm glad you guys are doing this 👏🏽
I have the sunglasses from Patagonia made from fishing nets they are awesome.
I just really wish Patagonia would make soft crown hats. Not all of us have square heads, so we look silly wearing stiff crown caps.

What about the P6 trad cap?
Has Patagonia considered not using plastic? People often get stuck on the corporate ideology of Recycle - Reduce - Re-use, forgetting Reconsider - Refuse. As Eco as Patagonia tries to be, they are in the Oil Biz.
Yes!! Love the innovation that keeps coming from you guys! I bought the Bureo x Costa sunglasses a while back.
I commend you and your company for the efforts you are making in helping keep this plastic out of our oceans.
Thank you for doing what you do!!! I love Patagonia hats... now I love them even more!!
Great. I was working with Interface a number of years back when they began their program in the Philippines, and was always a huge fan of the power of these programs. Not only as a way to bring ghost nets out of the oceans, but as an economic vehicle where waste had "value" and where the benefit to the community could be sustained.
Increíble iniciativa los felicito como me gustaría que traigan ese concepto a la Argentina.
So inspiring... Great job guys, thank you so much!
Thank you for this that’s why I’m a customer of Patagonia for life!
THIS IS AMAZING!
This is a very good example of how modern brands should act their role in our society. While, consumers can contribute to save marine animal lives, they can aquire a sustainable brand product to inspire other people. This movement brings all wins for consumers, the brand, and ocean environment.
What happens to the hats?

They probably end up in the trash after a decade or so, but I'm sure Patty has stats on how long people keep their hats. Then again, they might also end up in someone's closet. Better than a net in the ocean

Terrific initiative aside: this is a great video on its own! I had a very Wes Anderson-esque feeling. Well done!
Awesome effort and great edit!
Great work, congratulations!
Much appreciated your work and recycling plastic. How do you clean those fishing nets to be ready for recycle?
Its so amazing. Me watching this with the hat on my head whatching a video about the hat on my head
Super Buena Iniciativa
I just want you to know every year when I aḿ teaching my 6th grade science students our unit on Reducing Human Impacts, and they have to create a business plan to reduce human impacts, I always show them this video to show an example of how itś done. 👏
Awesome stuff. Out of curiosity, how much energy is consumed/required to turn the netting into pellets and what is the source of said energy?
@TavisAllen
4 жыл бұрын
Good question. One would want to assume that the required energy consumption is less than, and at the very least equal to, that of virgin plastic production, because unfortunately, if a process doesn't make sense financially, then most often said process doesn't happen.

net manufacturers should be obligated to buy this product
Hey guys, I`m probably late on this....but you should contact the guys from The Ocean Cleanup !!
Think I’m ready to get back into environmental policy and work at Patagonia
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
LOVE this so much
This gives me hope for the future
GREAT !!!
I really want to have his shirt..is it a patagonia shirt?
Hi @Patagonia! I would like to understand better how you make it traceable or why you call it traceable... Thanks!
Ok. But where is the rest of the hat sourced? What about other textiles?
🔥!
👍🏼
Collaboration with @Ocean Cleanup possible? They also collect fishnets from the pacific, that would be great.
Awesome
chile noma
How can I get involved?
Maybe if they still used the old less efficient nets then the sea would have more fish in it. Ban the plastic nets and scuttle the boats of anyone found using them.
What if you could buy the ocean cleanup harvest & upcycle those materials. Help fund their campaign & reuse environmental hazards. Or perhaps fund a local river system to capture material before it hits the sea. anyways 👍
Yeeeeeeaaaah!!!
How can I be involved in the process?
How about just using the pellets to make new nets?
wouuuuu_
So I get to continue consuming and save the planet? Life just keeps getting better and better.
Headline: Raging years long chemical fire engulfs 30 story building. Patagonia brings a shovel and wet rag and claims victory in tamping down the conflagration, says we need more shovels and wet rags and we should be good.
*why not **_also_** deploy massive awareness campaigns through public schools/universities similar to the usa?* within 20 years you will see a difference. ecuador is a GREAT example of this.

Hello, I'm curious what Ecuador is doing exactly, do you have some information on this?
hi boys, One question is for an evaluation task with a grade for my teacher: within the triple impact, do you have any investment for the benefit of society, something like an NGO-style benefit or student benefit or any benefit in particular? Within the triple impact, what is the beneficial impact for society?
is this why ur stuff is so expensive?
This is great to do. How about we just stop making things from non biodegradable materials?
Is this why my silk weight boxers smell fishy
I don't buy hats I have enough to last a life time. 😅
All the work to recycle makes me think we should go back to biodegradable nets of the past. You have to recycle the hat, eventually, too. Don’t get me wrong- I pick up trash all the time and trash does not belong on the naked earth or in the oceans. Whatever it takes, plastic needs to come out of the ocean.

Yeah I'd like to see hemp fishing nets come back
@MrLightPanda
4 жыл бұрын
Hudson Gardner yeah i bet it would be cheaper to use hemp then plastic- maybe not the materials... but the clean up/re use of the plastic I bet is more expensive in the long run. Plastic can be very cheap to manufacture (plastic bags require much less energy than paper to make) but the lingering effects of plastic sure are a headache.
They should ban plastic nets. And make hats out of cotton. No recycling no plastic.

Art Monkey « they » shouldnt kill everything all the time. See? I can do it too
I agree with what you're doing but the video is a bit cheesy.
that's some serious stashes of used fish nets on those trucks. are you spreading the word to other countriess? good idea to pay the fishermen for retreiving nets, as most fishermen i'm familiar with (baja sur, mexico) can use the cash.........!!
I like the ocean. So I just don't eat seafood or support fishing in anyway. Buying one of these caps or sunglasses while eating fish just does not make sense.
