This video talks about one of the MOST IMPORTANT principles for increasing revenue (even into the MILLIONS) for a small farm business!
Join the Shepherdess Newsletter: bit.ly/ShepherdessNWSLTR
Today's video features Joel Salatin sharing some valuable insight on how to increase income and profitability on a small farm. This video talks about diversifying and building multiple income streams on your farm. This is a basic principle in business and one that nearly every Millionaire takes hold of. Diversity of income streams is a hedge against disaster on farm. It creates a safety net of income that will catch you when any one enterprise struggles. Diversity of income on farm makes the startup losses bearable and cuts risk that accompanies ranching.
Whether your diversification means more animals, or maintaining a full time job, I hope this video encourages you on your farming for profit journey!

Little late watching some of yours videos but this video is probably one of the most important ones due to how much truth goes behind it. We are officially opening a hatchery next year after doing birds for the last 2 years took the dive. We sell eating eggs, hatching eggs, chicks, adults, processed birds that is spread across turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, and quail. Just our birds depending on how we market next year can generate $30-100k and it all really comes down to how much work in marketing we are putting in. We do goats and cattle as well but will be taking a step back from cows and going all commercial goats. We have 9.5 acres of pasture from them and are working on cross fencing and can go from 30 goats open grazing to 90 head of goats by extreme pasture management. The 3 acres we have fenced off for birds we are able to cut our $10k feed bill in half to 75% by growing our feed. We switched to natural worming for animals so we were able to eliminate synthetic wormer all together. The rest 2 acres of property we be used for growing our own food. Start small and when ready dont be afraid to take the plunge!

I really love the book “Millionaires Next Door”. It talks a lot about how many millionaires get there by being thrifty instead of spendy, and yes finding additional sources of income. I think farming is a great addition, but for most people getting the land is the hardest part. We were lucky to have a strong financial foundation that allowed us to buy our farm... and we did it through having our own business first. I love the theme of diversity to improve finances, but also that diversity is what helps nature thrive and keeps things in balance. So it’s win, win in that way too! Loving these more podcast focused episodes!

I’m a mortgage broker and also do other things revolving around real estate and I suggest that book to people all the time. It’s also important to remember that a dollar saved is worth much more than a dollar earned. Because that dollar saved is a real dollar. You have already paid taxes on that money. When you earn a dollar there are a bunch of taxes to be paid on that dollar. And depending on how you earned that dollar there may be overhead and other expenses to repay. Where that dollar saved is actually a dollar.

"The way to wealth is as simple as the way to market." Ben Franklin I love your rapid learning approach. And the focus on the previous successful subjects around you. Kinda how I built and studied my mentor list. Diversity 201: introduction to hedging. One of my favorite (unofficial/undeclared) mentors taught me something key at an early age. He was finishing up some chores, so he sent my dad and I in the house to start on the hot coffee while we waited for him. There on the kitchen table were bits of papers. Stock receipts. Major numbers. Biggest dollar figures I ever saw! All were energy companies. Having followed his lead, I smile to myself every time I hear a neighbor complain about the price of diesel. Or the price of gas at the pump. Keep learning and keep sharing. I am especially enthusiastic to learn more about marketing. I think of marketing as the Golden key to any success. And your humility is well founded. We all stand upon others shoulders. Look up to the tallest, but don't neglect learning from the shorties (sometimes what not to do)?

I agree Diversity is key! But our enthusiasm for progress can sometimes be detrimental if we over commit ourselves. I know from experience. My grandfather told me “The cheapest lesson to learn is the failure of others. They paid the price in full but it only cost you the price of a beer and your time to listen.” Once you have mastered one craft and now are efficient enough to take on another go for it! Burning the candle from both ends is only good if you’re the candle stick maker

I like your videos and you bring up some valuable points for new farmers. One thing I began to question, which I think would be a worthwhile topic to look into, is: what percentages of six-figure farmers live near a large city or a "foodie" area? Many of those touting large incomes, especially with CSA type businesses, are just outside of Seattle or are in California where people can afford $12/lb for bacon. Yet in the areas where land is cheap, I am not sure most of these businesses would survive under that type of business model. Did your research reveal any of this?

You call it diversify but it really is SYNERGY. I.e. you already have the asset of a shed to house chicken feed and a tractor & wagon to haul the feed. Use that asset to haul in the same run feed to the sheep , pig, ducks. One asset then becomes more utilized, economy of scale.

Stay warm girl! Its 30 degrees not 39 (,sigh) here in North GA atm. Sigh. It's supposed to be 12-14 degrees tonight 😢 I put petroleum jelly on my roosters combs to try to protect them from frost bite while they play in the yard during the day, etc. My American Breese roosters like sleeping on the metal fence and one in the woods but the boys I can catch on the fence tonight and put them in my second coop. I'm done resetting the book section at Sam's club so i brought the cardboard boxes from that job home for insulation for the chickens. Im blessed for many reasons but the duck down winter coat I have is really great. I bought it from the thrift store for $11 last year. Another great buy I have is the liner to a military helmet that covers my whole head, neck, and mouth. I wear a toboggan underneath it and it keeps me toasty. The cold hurts me pretty bad so I'm very grateful that I have tools to keep me warm. Stay warm in Texas! I saw that y'all are having issues with your power grid again. All I have for heat is electricity. I bought some super sized hot hand warmers and they work great and can use them inside the house. If things got dire I spring for a Mr Buddy heater last year that can run 2 tanks at a time ir just 1 and a few of those 1 lb bottles of propane in case something bad happened here. I'm keeping everyone in my prayers because the weather extremes don't play.

I love your channel and it’s very educational. My mom grew up on a big farm and I spent a lot of time on that farm with my grandparents when I was young. I’m now in my 50s and looking for land to buy to start my own Homestead and make my money with grass fed beef and sheep. I would point out one thing, however, about diversified income streams. You mentioned that multiple income streams from one animal. That actually is not diversified. Let me give you a perfect example. I have spent most of my adult life as a mortgage broker while also making money as a real estate investor on the side. I have my real estate license plus investing in real estate plus my mortgage business. So theoretically that’s three streams of income. But, all three of those streams come from real estate. When the collapse happened in 2008 the whole economy blew up. But actually things started happening almost 2 years earlier in the real estate industry. For me the collapse started in 2006 revolved around real estate and the mortgage industry. Overnight I lost all three of my revenue streams. Therefore I now believe in having revenue streams that are in different industries. Ideally what you want is at least one revenue stream that is a hedge against the others. What I mean by that is fine things that are not correlated. For example, when the economy is doing bad people don’t buy as many new houses are new cars. They’ll buy a used car or spend more money than usual to get their car fixed. Also instead of buying a new house they will expand or renovate their house. So how do we capitalize on that? Well one thing I’m planning to do is I’m planning to get my used car license. I’m not looking to have a used car lot. I’m gonna take a little piece of my farmland that’s on the main road and make that a used car lot but I’m only going to have two or three cars sitting on it. I’m not looking to run a used car business. I’m looking to sell maybe one car a month on the Internet and make at least $1000 off of that car. That way I’m learning that business and making a little bit of money without much effort. A few hours of work a month to make anywhere from $1000-$2000. But here’s the benefit of that. Next time we go into a recession they used car market will be very profitable. If my other revenue streams collapse I can focus on ramping up the used car business. Right now used cars like used farm equipment are selling at record prices. Other markets are struggling. Used cars and used farm equipment is seeing record profits. That is being truly diversified. In summary if all of your revenue streams revolve around your sheep are your cattle or your farm and Something Happens to your sheep or your cattle or your farm you lose all of your revenue streams. Therefore you want revenue streams that are not related. Naturally you can have multiple revenue streams in any one thing and multiple revenue streams on the farm makes sense and is efficient. But don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Pun intended! Lol. Make sure you have revenue streams that are in other types of businesses and other sectors of the economy. That way unless you have an entire economic collapse you should not lose all of your revenue streams. In fact if you pick wisely some of those revenue streams will do very well in a bad economy. Like I said, used cars. Anyone that has mechanical ability should be going out and finding old rusty farm equipment and restoring it and selling it at auctions and making a huge profit! And it’s actually easier to do than you think because unlike equipment today old equipment is not complicated by computers and electronics systems. Older tractors are very straightforward. Older farm equipment older tractors especially diesel equipment are very easy to restore but when they’re in bad shape cosmetically they can be bought cheaply. For example Justin Rhodes interviewed a Farmer that has an incredibly nice tractor for only $2000. He bought one tractor for $1000 because the engine was blown. He bought another tractor for $1000 because the transmission was blown. He then took the good engine off the tractor with the bad transmission put it on the other tractor now he had a very nice tractor for only $2000. That’s thinking smart!

I see that you are raising hair sheep and not wool sheep. At about 3-5$ a pound for so so fleece, I suppose the wool industry is not really worth the cost of raising a good wool sheep? Also, in seeing your leather video, while I do not really use a wallet, I would be interested in purchasing American made leather labels for hand knits, if your leather is thin enough. They are all the rage right now. :) These could be something that uses up your small leather scraps that would otherwise be tossed out.

Their is a lot of fun being Diversified sheep, plants, wool,Australian shepherds,GLD’s but their are other thing that help that you might not sell but brings the cost of living down tho if you raises your own pork raises 3 1 for are family the others to cover the cost of feed and butcher free other than are labor. Same for cows raise more than one so you can recover your cost you are going to be feeding them everyday no matter what might as well pocket a little for your time. Am not a farmers market type of person but selling tomato plants at the beginning of the season for a few months is right up my alley.

Doing just one activity is a recipe for boredom.Diversity is a solution for many problems.Farmers who own their land also have the choice to completely close the feeding cycle of animals, by having a crop they farm on their own land for their animals and if you wish you can grow plenty of crops.I can imagine if we're talking about more than 1 varierty of say vegetables you can also offer them to your customers thus expanding your bascet of things you sell at your farm and therefore like you say in the video making people spend more because you have more products to offer them.Time is valuable commodity and having the choice of bying many products at one place has tremendous benefits for every customer.Theres a wide variety of crops that grow well in wet climate.

something many dont know or actually think about. Many folks have a cattle farm or some farming endevor. and use it for a tax write off. They dont care about making a profit. They want to lose money on paper. They depeceriate equiptment and buy stuff rather than pay taxes on their income. They use their farm to defer taxes or hide income. My Father & mother used his farm losses and every year got every penny of income tax that was withheld from thier paycheck back. Then in there retirement he and my mother used their Social Security to keep a cattle herd that never made any money. Its very hard to compete with folks who actually want to lose money. Or folks who really dont need to make a Profit. Something very wrong about a buisness where every necessary thing you buy in order to produce you pay full retail and everything you produce you sell wholesale. Now Im old. and prior to the fake gas shortage in the 70's. If you wanted to start a buisness no matter what it was. If you really worked at it you would make a profit. After that fake gas shortage that gradually began to change. The USA began to decline. Wages stagnated. Inflation took a hold and never abated. The price of goods ,land, equiptment ect.was determined by how much the bank would loan. Then the goverment started guarnteeing the loans if the loan has a certain criteria. And at the very bottom of the loan requirements was the credit worthiness of the borrower. Many times I hears Debt slaves make statements. One is I dont worry about how much I owe. I worry about where I can borrow more. Im going to borrow all I can and let inflation make me a millionaire! Other folks say I did not have anything to start with. So this type of unfettered borrowing and spending. That works against those who save to buy and want to be dent free. Its a rigged system. Not saying you cant beat that system or somehow use it to advance you goals. I just think you need to be informed of the hurdles in the path.

Hi Bryan! I know of 2 flocks that only deworm once a year. They are 15-20 years into the flock building process, which has a lot to do with their success. Culling and allowing time for adaptation are the best ways to breed parasite resistance into a pure dorper flock.

I’m just going to say, I live in Montana. No farmer I know is rich. That’s not the point! They make enough to raise their family and love their job. That enough. That being said, I love my small small flock of sheep. They bring in a few thousand a year at the cost of a few hundred. They are profitable but not life sustaining. Also, working a full job you will have tragedies. You will have the miracles of birth, but you will have a bad births where a lamb dies. I had one this afternoon where a lamb was a quarter out with a leg bent back and a swollen tongue. I had help getting it pushed back and brought out but it was too late. But I’m a pragmatist. The mother is alive and while she might need a little milking she will survive. The ones that hurt me are the ones that are born and are beautiful but then just die despite every effort. Also, is google spying on me? This is the first I’ve seen your channel after spending many hours to pull a misrepresented lamb and trying to save it. I don’t why they would. I’m pretty poor.

Another trait common among wealthy farmers is humility. And if that doesn't specify enough - frugality. Perception is often misleading. Case in point: at a recent seminar, numbers shared with the banker for the purpose of a business loan are not always the same numbers shared publicly?

I just want to leave a comment no probably not be seen or red but anyway touch on the guy same feet can guy save the fee conversion and I've touched on that as far as cattle think the problem is people raising the wrong kind of cow There are 3 breeds of cattle that will eat almost anything and have a high feed conversion rate That I think people should do their research on one is the Is the piney woods cattle The Florida cracker, And the Texas longhorn I know they're not the most favorite of people because they're not real fatty like you're all high-and-mighty black Angus And honestly I had stakes out of all those and I can't tell the damn difference But with the droughts and everything going on right now might be better to get rid of the European breeds and go with an American naturally selected tough ass animal that can eat almost anything Those breeds are highly parasite resistant And don't really need us to provide them much at anything other than a little bit of hay little bit of feed and water if they're inside of offense, And on the goat side I've looked into it through Ohio state's goat boot camp it seems really the superior animal is the superior animal is the Spanish goat on the goat side versus the boar and everything else They're really overlooked because they're a longer leaner looking goat But when you compare carcasses you get the same amount of meat For half the effort Man that's all I got to say about that Sorry if there's some Typos are background I'm on the tractor so I'm using talk to text

Do you need to make reference to God in every video? Marketing and word of mouth spread your brand. Not God... I know you are using God for branding to secure your niche (female christian cult personality farmer), but you're also alienating potential customers in doing so. At least on KZread I'd suggest toning the god bothering down. I'm actually unsubscribing and would not be interested in signing up to your Patreon as a result of the religious content (and I do support more than one farmer via Patreon). Just some feedback if you care to hear it.

What an intriguingly bitter comment. This amazing young lady has the good sense to keep the Father of our universe at the center of her life and livelihood. God has given her all; you have given her nothing... What is your council worth? God leads her to green pastures. You would lead her to bitterness. If you did a little more listening and less sharing of your poor advice, you would see a wisdom that you have yet to consider. If I were to consider God and business separate matters... If I believed that speaking openly of God were a hobby that only happened in a boring church building every Sunday morning, I would surely hate religion too, and think it were pointless. Go to church. Grow your faith. Then use the rest of your week to share it. (Especially in a professional setting.) If you’re going to stand for something, people should know the rock you’re built on. Shepherdess teaches the words of life, and like every good shepherd, she cares for all of God’s ‘sheep’. ♥️ 🐑
