This month, Dean Kevin J. Vaughn, Ph.D., welcomes the new Executive Director of UCR Palm Desert Center, Agam Patel. Agam has been with UCR Palm Desert for more than 15 years and plans to grow Palm Desert’s presence in the Coachella Valley. UCR Palm Desert is hosting an Open House on Saturday, October 14th, which aims to introduce high school and community college students to UC Riverside and UCR University Extension programs that can benefit them.
Also, UCR University Extension has launched a new online program in Nutrition and Healthy Living in partnership with edX, which provides opportunities to learn without the barriers of cost or location. More courses will be coming soon!
Additionally, UCR University Extension hosted a group of 19 young scholars from Queretaro, Mexico for a customized three-week program in Sustainable Transportation. The program included specialized English instruction for engineers and entrepreneurs. It also featured labs and lectures at UCR’s Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), and students were also hosted by experts from the City of Riverside’s Traffic Management Center and the California Air Resource Board (CARB). The students showed lots of enthusiasm and embraced the opportunities the program afforded them.
Finally, Dean Vaughn highlights Degree Completion student, Edwin Lopez Rivas, who expressed how excited he is to be readmitted to UCR. Edwin stopped in the middle of his degree due to COVID’s impact on him, but he is returning in the Fall thanks to funding through the Degree Completion initiative. Edwin thanks UCR University Extension’s staff for their exceptional advising and support, and he encourages other students to think about pursuing the opportunity of completing their degrees.
