A Mentat Analysis of Dune Part Two - Scene One Breakdown & Book Differences

Фильм және анимация

Dune Part Two in-depth analysis and breakdown of the first scene. This scene covers the first 9min and 14sec of Denis Villeneuve's Dune Part Two movie. Paul Atreides awakens from communicating with his sister Alia who is currently a fetus. The Fremen abandon him and Jessica on the sands of Arrakis as a Harkonnen threat uses suspensors to deploy just beyond the hill they're taking cover behind. The scene that unfolds from here is action packed as an eclipse goes into full effect, although I feel that it could have had a bit more substance.

The scene is an establishing one as in, it reminds us of where our main characters are and what is their plight. Some action helps gain the viewers attention. The complaints about the specifics of the weaponry or lack thereof are completely irrelevant and have no bearing on the quality of the writing/storytelling

Oh really? Completely irrelevant seems a bit definitive. Yes adding action to a movie makes sense. Adding action that breaks, or is at the very least bending the rules of the movie breaks immersion. I'm sorry you don't agree with the concept of critiquing an action scene. I just wish it was more thought out. And to be fair I don't think I ever complained about it being an establishing scene. Either way I'm glad you liked the scene.

It only breaks immersion for those that pay attention to those minute details which is likely a very small portion of the watchers@FatalxBlade

@@FatalxBladeAlso, this isn't a movie about military tech. Its a classic heroes journey with a bit of a twist in that the hero doesn't end up being all that heroic. You're points would be much more valid for a military training video about fighting on arrakis

@@TheWmubronco30 I get the point you're trying to make, but this video is an indepth analysis of the movie in relation to the books. Along with my opinions on it. I think we will have to just agree to disagree because to me cohesive world building is absolutely necessary. I just think the scene could've been better. Your opinion is valid, but I'm not going to change mine.

We see a similar problem when Paul meets up again with Gurney, Gurney has a long range gun which actually blows up one of the mines coming towards the crawler, but then he decides to pull out his sword instead of using the long range gun, makes no sense. Paul pops out of the ground and trips him, I'm sorry, I know it looks cool, but this whole army popping out of the ground thing makes no sense either.

Yeah, I'll get to that scene eventually if I keep going. Part Two seems to have wanted to retain the hand to hand combat, but not putting too much thought into making it make sense.

What's wrong with either of those? Frank Herbert gives no reason for lasguns not to be used in the desert. Only that Harkonnens seem to stop after Idaho's trap. Also what's wrong with the ground attack? We see the sand compactor tool which makes it possible to tunnel and burst out.

Maula pistol shots while crouched right nearvy in caves or rocks they jnow well make sense to me. It communicates Fremen superiority in environmental knowledge We see lasgun shots. Only the Harkonnens use them. They're fighting back.

Yeah, probably is supposed to be Maula pistol shots, but at that distance is kind of insane. And it's weird that there are only a couple red bullet trails which I assume are Fremen shots compared to the many lasgun shots. I do like that the scene establishes Fremen superiority. I just would've preferred it being less hidden from us, and the combat more clear. Especially because we see lasgun fire but never see an up close shot of the Harkonnens shooting back.

@@FatalxBlade I never noticed the coloured shots. But I always assumed lasguns are always bulky, meanwhile we see no Fremen holding anything bulky. When they do use guns they're massive. So unlikely to be carried in small desert expeditions.

17:23 You see the red shots being fired. It's weird the VFX team added just a couple of red shots and a ton of lasgun fire. Either way I think you're right and we are to believe they are dispatching them with Maula pistols even though the distance is very impressive. I'm guessing that's why they never show the Fremen.@@pseudonymousbeing987

Does anyone know why they omitted the weirding modules and way from the new Dune movies. To me that was a key part of the story

The Weirding Modules are exclusive to the 1984 Dune movie. Stilgar calls Jessica a Weirding woman in Part One, but it is never really expanded upon.

As much as I liked Dune 2, this opening scene is frustrating if you actually think about it, what happen to the ship which brought the Harkonnens, oh yea, you just tell your air cover to piss off. The bodies dropping like flies off the mountain was complete nonsense, maybe 1, but all of them ? Jessica saving Paul was pure ex-machina. It put me into a bad mood for the movie in the theatre, it was spectacle over substance

  • @FatalxBlade

Yeah, I actually overlooked the whole drop ship leaving. Apparently the Harkonnens were too busy shoving bodies off the cliff instead of trying to kill their attackers. Absolutely spectacle over substance.

Those drop ships are never shown to be used in combat. They appear to be purely lumbering haulcraft with no offensive weapons or special maneavourability. They have no purpose to solve and may needlessly expose the nearby hunting party.
