Pertinent and good critical questions well answered. From my perspective, the society has to be portrayed fairly, because only then can an adequate sense of tragedy of what it was like to live in a society in which such horrible things happen, the sense of an intellectual, ultimately. So, the two-sidedness of becoming a perpetrator in the “mould created by Mao” (Yang Jisheng) and the fear of potentially becoming a victim (a sort of social insecurity) should arise from the stories of victims, rather than be treated as equally worth presenting in a memorial museum along side victims, and, just as undesirable, rather than be hidden from view or left to the imagination.

It seems to me as though the Lhasa crowd thinking a starving boy being punished for stealing food from a Buddhist temple were REALLY missing the point - as indeed many people do - about the Tibetan monastery system.

She has her ideological standing, for sure. This is a book for the rightists actually, but the right-wing people may also not like it.
