A Master At Work! | Kevin Olusola "Down" [REACTION]

Kevin Olusola from Pentatonix impressed me with his rendition of "Down". His ability to utilize multiple instruments and intertwine his voice in many ways is incredible.
What else should I check out?

Kevin is pretty near a musical genius. He's extremely creative musically, yet he studied to become a doctor ( runs in the family) and do missionary work in China, so learned Mandarin as well as a couple of other languages. He was on the point of graduating Pre-Med at Yale when Scott Hoying called him after seeing a youtube video of Kevin beatboxing while playing the cello. Scott, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin (Kirstie) Maldonado had all been in high school together and wanted to enter a TV show competition for a capella groups and needed a bass ( Avi Kaplan was found thu their friend Ben Bram who is still their arranger) and a beatboxer. Kevin graduated and flew out to join the fledgling group, winning the competition with them and never looked back. Kevin plays piano, cello and sax at concert level, sings tenor, and does quite a bit of songwriting with the group. You should explore both Pentatonix and KO's channel. There's a lot of great stuff on there!

I've seen lots of Pentatonix stuff, but I've never looked into his stuff. I didn't know he had his own stuff out. His voice has great range, and I was amazed with the instrumentation and beat boxing. Holy fucking shit, Batman!

When someone asks Kirstie and Mitch who can sing higher, they look at each other, shrug, and say, "Maybe Kevin?" (Note: For those who don't know who I'm talking about, Kirstie [rhymes with thirsty] Maldonado is the only woman in Pentatonix and sings anything from low alto through coloratura soprano. Mitch Grassi [Grah'see, emphasis on the first syllable] is Pentatonix's contratenor, with a range of just over six octaves, known for his ethereally beautiful high vocals.)

You need to watch Kevin's Fifth. Yale Medical School, speaks Mandarin, Cello-box's, competed in a Yo Yo MA cello competition and has the most cutest laugh ever. 😂 I'm sure a lot of Pentaholics will add to this list. Lol

I figured you'd like this. I'm learning more and more what stuff really moves you. Where showing new genres and stuff to broaden the base of a reactor is important, sometimes giving them something you know will be 100% in their wheelhouse is important. Keeps them guessing just where the chaos will lead them next.

It makes me happy to know that Kevin is alive and flourishing in the world. I know him through Pentatonix, which I don’t see on your a capella playlist. That leads me to think you don’t know them at all or you already know all of their music. If they are new to you, you can start with the big three - Hallelujah, their Daft Punk medley (first Grammy) and Bohemian Rhapsody. If you like what you hear, there’s much, much more. New subscriber in the hope that you will follow up with PTX. Peace from Ohio …

Kevin's last name is pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth. And yes, he is, indeed, a member of Pentatonix. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He has a pre-med degree from Yale and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional musician instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place. This is a live feed from a Pentatonix concert in Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin's home town. "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth": kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpZ3w9Wvk7HeZ5s.html In the video (Kevin's Fifth), the person on the drums is Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), Pentatonix's bass. Between them, Matt and Kevin form the rhythm section of Pentatonix, so they work closely together. The dancers are a pair of professional dancers with the stage name of Cost n' Mayor who traveled and performed with Pentatonix during their 2022 Christmas tour. You can also see them as the dancing video techs in the official video of Pentatonix's "Kid on Christmas."

Kevin's channel: youtube.com/@kolusola In Pentatonix, Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but they do have a few songs where he solos. I recommend the following: • "Imagine" (the official video) • "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone" • "Run To You" (Kevin doesn't have a solo in this one, because no one does. It's five part harmony throughout, not even any beatboxing. And if you watch the official video, every time the camera focuses on a specific singer that singer's voice is slightly more distinct than the others. Kevin actually gets down to the upper reaches of baritone in this song, which was co-written by Kevin and Avi [pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable] Kaplan, Pentatonix's original bass, who resigned in 2017 for personal reasons.) Also, Kevin doesn't solo in it, but I think you would thoroughly enjoy Pentatonix's cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody." This is a song that's virtually impossible to perform properly, but Pentatonix manages it, and all without instruments. When possible, watch Kevin in this video. He has a whole invisible drum kit. He'll reach out with an invisible drumstick to hit, say, an invisible snare drum, and you'll hear the snare drum. You know it's coming from Kevin's mouth, but you just saw him hit a snare drum! It quickly becomes surreal. I love the way Kevin can make me see the instruments that aren't there.
