A Lowcountry Cat has learned to communicate using words

It sounds like something from outer space, but it's not.
"I can sound intimidating, but it basically means button training," laughs Nina Leipold.
And button training is something you have to see and hear to believe.
Flounder is a Lowcountry Bengal cat that talks.
We're not talking about a meow or a purr. Flounder is a conversing cat that answers questions and voices her concerns through the help of pre-programmed speech buttons.
"There was one point where I was out of town and I get text messages when the buttons are pushed," explains Leipold. "I get a message that she was angry and at that point I knew she understands."
Leipold, Flounder's owner, has worked and trained animals for years. Over the last two years, she and her furry friend have worked to connect in a whole new way.
"AIC buttons give animals the opportunity to remind us of things, they are able to ask for help when they need help with something and it also gives us the opportunity to explain things better to them," explains Leipold.
Flounder is one focused feline.
Thanks to her training with Leipold, Flounder's vocabulary has expanded to 30 words and counting.
"When we have guests over, she'll kick them out," laughs Leipold. "She says Stranger-Home-Done-Now."
And like many, Flounder has a favorite word.
"The most recent button I've added is "ugh", says Leipold. "She was needing a way to communicate when she's frustrated and it's turned into her favorite word."
Flounder recently joined the research group How.TheyCanTalk.org, which collects data to educate others on communicating with various species through the use of talking buttons.

This is what assumption looks like. Flounder actually got nervous with the news anchor in her home and asked for me to put her tutu on. We call it her “safety tutu” and she treats it like a thunder shirt and it helps her with anxiety. Maybe before you assume things that aren’t true you ask questions instead of making uneducated comments? Just a suggestion…

Funny she actually has a “tutu” button because she prefers to wear her security tutu when she’s in uncomfortable situations such as when there is a stranger in her house interviewing her…I love your uneducated assumptions though! Keep them coming!

@@floundercat Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s brilliant doing what your doing communicating with your loved ones and it can only benefit their mental health (and yours indirectly). But I’ve seen enough cat experts on KZread, including Jackson Galaxy, and one of the don’ts tend to be don’t dress them up, most cats hate it. Yours is obviously an exception. ❤️

Her tutu makes her feel safe so let’s not generalize that all cats hate being in clothes because that just isn’t true.

Some mother cats like wearing onesies that prevent kittens from trying to nurse on them.
They fooled you.... the talking pet thing is just edited video to make it seem one video cut resulted in another when in reality it was cut and pasted. LOL, some people fall for the silliest things. Tricks yes, talking, sorry we wish.

@annihilationHaven: you should check out Todd, Billie and Russell. They are cats who also use these buttons to communicate and have been doing so for years. They feature long videos which are mostly definitely NOT edited! Russell even has been featured in some live sessions where you can call in real time to talk to his person, while Russell is there doing his thing. I personally had a cat (Ace) who learned to communicate with 5 buttons before his untimely death due to a rare cancer. You might be confused because not all cats seem drawn to master the buttons. Russell has 3 "siblings", none of whom seem the least bit interested in learning the buttons, nor did the 3 litter mates of Ace's.

It’s pretty uneducated to assume that all cats using AIC buttons are edited and fake. It actually comes off as you might be the one wanting attention to cry out in such blatant disregard for what’s really happening here.
