A Look Inside The Most Talented Surf Town In America

Спорт

San Clemente isn’t all Lowers and …Lost surfboards. (OK, so maybe it kinda is.)
The latest episode of “Wish You Were Here” takes us inside the most talented surf town in America, and the factory where most of its most successful surfers’ crafts are made. From The Gudauskas brothers, to Kolohe Andino, to Griffin Colapinto, to Jett Schilling, their one common denominator, aside from being San Clemente locals, is a long-standing relationship with both Lower Trestles and Matt Biolos. It’s the combination that’s (literally) shaped their careers.
“Matt likes to invest in the future of surfing, via the groms,” says Nate Yeomans, during a tour of the …Lost factory in the clip above. “You can paddle out in the lineups around here and there’s kids throwing tail, flipping out, and doing huge airs all over the place, and I’d say 98 percent of them are on Mayhems.”
This 10-minute piece, shot mostly at Trestles, but with a sprinkle of the surrounding beachbreaks, is a reminder why San Clemente just might be the best beach town in California to be a surfer.

Damn when I was a grom in the 80's it used to take 6 months of saving just to buy a board, if you weren't sponsored you had one board and you cherished it more than anything in the world, you rode it in all conditions big or small, you looked after it like it was a Fabergé egg, even the sponsored guys only had a couple of boards, now I see so many surfers that have 20 plus boards, that's just insane to me..

The kids coming up today & this “modern era” of surfing is/are off the charts sick with it. Watching these cats makes me so proud. I’m a product of the 70’s & 80’s & whatever talent & skills we thought we had learned/possessed after two decades of surfing, these kids surpassed before they got out of jr. high. It’s f’ing unbelievable. I have 2 young daughters that have taken up the sport & through them, I’m quasi connected to the current surf generation & consider myself lucky for it. For a few years there, I wasn’t so sure where surfing was “going” but now that my kids are living the lifestyle & im lucky enough to see these kids on the regular, I’m convinced there’s way more growth ahead & the sport is in more than capable hands. There is no ceiling & their potential is limitless. Hopefully, pro surfing will grow at the same rapid rate & become much more lucrative for the participants!!!

(one) down side of SoCal... all the weirdness around (some not all Im sure... ) parents and groms... I live in Huntington Beach... if you go to the south of the pier... you may see bunch of parents with giant tripod cameras pointed to the beach and groms (even on weekdays)... the ugly side is it seems kids are "home schooled" so they can surf during the day... once I saw a big guy yelling at his small daughter, "get back out there you didnt catch enough waves !"

You are correct, homeschooling is awesome but you do have way too many agro parents banking on their kids going pro. I haven't been surfing in months now and only miss what it was 15 years ago when I was homeschooled. I used to have 6' river all to myself all the time, I would ride my bike down there, surf next to the surf teams then stay till 11-noon just surfing my brains out. Now no matter what someone is out, forget weekends.

Trestles and waves in San Clemente are Point Breaks... waves are usually small and super soft but probably consistent... Im just theorizing but maybe this helps to build stronger surfers and there are a lot of places to surf in SoCal altogether beach breaks and few reef breaks... additionally the climate is milder warmer so its easier to go out practice more often (than for example NorCal... Im from NorCal its more rugged up there plus size waves more big wave surfing up there... ) Plus it's Southern California and there's a positive surf culture here... I think today Vans Opening starts at Huntington Beach (super fun to watch... sit on the sand and watch amazing surfers on tiny waves... once it was big and pumping few years ago but usually surf seem to get tiny by the time contest starts... too funny :)

No doubt, I get the feeling that Hawaii is separate when they say "America". Like how the pro surfers on tour if they're from Hawaii it says Hawaii if they're from anywhere else it says USA. But also, if you just go by surfers on tour, San Clemente has more than any other single town with Kolohe, Kanoa (I think), and Conner. I don't know where Lau, Florence and Moniz are from exactly but I doubt it's the same town. Italo and Felipe live in San Clemente too, don't they? I could have that wrong and there's probably a Brazilian town that has more tour surfers but whatever

That's exactly right. For surfing purposes, Hawaii is separate from America, as it should be. Plus, the "north shore" isn't exactly just one town, is it?

@@PlaySA Well most locals here consider it one part of the island but you are right there are about 2 or 3 really small towns that make up the north shore, and I'm glad they separate it. aloha!

Spanish village by the sea, yet not one good authentic Mexican restaurant in that damn place. Also, the reason there are so many good surfers in San Clemente is because spoiled kids get the privilege of good breaks all day everyday.

Agreed. Spoiled brats with horrible attitudes who learn how to snake people at an early age 'til an old timer puts them in their place. Same spoiled brats that leave the coastline trashed because "someone else will pick it up." F-grade diarrhea inducing water after a good rainstorm. Sounds pretty accurate.

Ok the title is pretty misleading... i fully expected to see haleiwa but instead got hipster paradise san clemente. Wait how many of the current top 24 are from san clemente? And how many world champions? And actually its not even a look into san clemente its more like free advertising for lost surfboards and some footage of lost's grom team riders at lowers. Two thumbs way down.

"Most Talented" ?!?! Come on! Have a little journalistic integrity. Most fortunate or most successful are claims that could maybe be backed up. But you're claimomg that some how there's an ingredient in the gene pool there thst breeds surfers that are more talented than those from other parts of the country. Now, most fortunate: Lower Trestles in their backyard, consistent swell, multiple major sponsors headquartered within few miles. Thriving surf culture. Thats believable. I know a dozen guys here in FL that given the chance and the waves, can do everything those SC cats can do and probably more
