A look inside a water powered LED shower head.

Well this turned out to be a bit destructive.
It appears that the current version of generic LED shower heads are glued shut and the electronics are potted in hard resin.
This is great from a reliability perspective, but makes a teardown just a little more violent.

6:56 "they also make them with thermal sensors so the led change color according to the temperature which i think is pretty pointless" thats not pointless, thats GENIUS! if you want to just look at your shower head and know if water flowing through is cold or not.

I bought a smaller version of this for a faucet ($0.99 eBay purchase since I was getting something from the buyer anyway), and it was terrible! It seriously restricted the water flow, so not only did the water come out way weaker than it should have, but the turbine made a TON of noise! It had the "motor speeding past what it was made for" sound and it vibrated the whole sink. It did have one interesting feature (which you ended up mentioning). It switched to blue when the water was cold, green when warm, and red when hot using a temperature sensor. I think the idea was kids knew when it was okay to wash their hands.

Some of those automatic motion sensing faucets are powered in a similar way, which charge a battery to store the power generated. Typically the failure mode for those is limescale building up on the turbine and housing, to the point where they bind against each other and the rotor will no longer turn to charge the battery.

It works the same way the Garden LED Sprayers work. I bought 3 for fun, they had too much spread for my garden so I took them apart. Same thing, a magnet span round the coils hidden inside and rectified to drive a colour changing LED. I took them out and wired the tiny circuits in parallel to a 3 Ni-Mh battery pack for 3.6V and mounted them in square cable trunking. Now I have a funky colour changing light bar :D

I think the controller is the problem, or maybe some part of the circuit has let water in. I have high pressure water and I'm guessing it found a weak spot after a year.

would it be possible to run a high lux LED indefinitely on a whole bunch of capacitors? like connect a AA battery for a few sec and run the light constantly?

  • @greenaum

    @greenaum

    7 жыл бұрын

What, you mean nothing to do with shower heads, just what you describe? In this case the capacitors would be acting like little rechargeable batteries. They'd charge up to the voltage of the battery, then discharge through the LED. I suppose if you had an utter ton of capacitors, it'd last a while. Of course you'd never get more energy out, or more light, than was in the battery to start with. The battery would provide a high current for a short period to charge your caps, then the caps would provide a lower current for a longer time. In general capacitors aren't good at storing large amounts of electricity, batteries are much better for that. So no, not indefinitely. It would be no better than just connecting the battery up directly.

I've been wondering if it's possible to design a showerhead or an "in between device" capable of charging batteries. A showerhead hydro charger. Any ideas?

I've featured inline micro turbines in other videos. They all restrict water flow, and in the case of a showerhead you'd also have to consider the wet environment.

Ah these things.. safe? Like can they ever break, like a seal and water getting inside to cause shocks?

the first drawing you made you mistaken on positif(+) and negatif(-), but we understand...diodes must have positif to go through it and not bump back against the wrong side.... but you know that...

Search my videos for turbine. There are at least two mini turbines on eBay.

Well that was cool. Say, have you ever seen a PC fan hacked to be used as a generator?. I would imagine the blades would need to be extended so it would not require a full blown gale to drive the fan. As you pointed out these motors have a fixed winding and a rotating external field.

+Craig Nehring If you take the LED version of the PC fans outside on a very windy day you can make them light up if the wind spins them fast enough. It's not an ideal arrangement though. It dopes require a lot of wind and a good speed.

Yeah, I was hoping to someday create some "urban lawn art" powered by the wind, sort of a solar LED thing but wind powered. I have, strangely enough, hundreds of case fans, most of them new and all of them ball bearing type. Hoarding can be dangerous thing ...

Let's say an LED has 20mA forward current when given 2V to it. Will it still take only 20mA when connected to let's say a 10A 2V power supply? that kinda makes sense, doesn't it?

  • @bigclivedotcom

You can theoretically do that, but even a tiny voltage variation will result in a significant current variation. Especially with the older gallium arsenide style red LED technology.
