    I could take all that plastic melt it down and make shingles for roofs, take the scrap metal and make into sheets for cheap housing, and screws and nails

    I use to do this with my grandpa we lived in philly and went to new Jersey at night and drive around the nice neighborhoods on trash day and pick up all electronics and metal, miss those days

    I have to strongly disagree with that statement. I can an have/ do strip literally hundreds of feet of copper (150lbs) in less than 3 hours with a wire stripper I adapted to use a cordless drill to run will strip 4/0 - 28ga no problems 50ft in literally seconds

    Tesla switched to LFP batteries for the last three years. And no matter which battery type the car has, if it reaches end of life (which the chassis or the rest of the car will be gone long before that) it can either be recycled or used in a battery pack for other applications

    Gold in phones can be pretty hard to extract depending on the phone. It's used cause it has the best conductivity and wont degrade over time. It's mainly used in very precise or delicate parts

    it's not just drug addicts, it's literally free money, like if you saw dollars laying on the ground why not pick it it up? I think the copper wire thing is all mixed up in urban forklore because crackheads use to cut up copper wire to use for crackpipes and has nothing to do with scrapping.

    I live in the Appalachian mountains of Eastern Ky and people do scrapping all the time here. U see people with their trucks piled high with scrape heading to the nearest recycling company. Copper brings the most money.

    I used to scrap parts of old ac systems as part of my job as a warehouse manager I’d send new equipment out and old equipment would come in and I’d scrap it not only to consolidate it in a smaller area but also to make more off the scrap as the various metals rather than just dumping it all for the steel price.

    I used to do this in Tampa. We hammered off mercury switches, which often made the mercury spray onto our arms. We cut lead wrapped cabling with a circular saw, blasting dust everywhere. Then we put it all on trucks for China.

    I know this is a real world problem, but I can’t help but be reminded of every RPG I’ve played where that Lvl 1-10 stage is grinding mass amounts of common, scrap items to put enough money together to get a mediocre weapon. Worth it.

    It's not really that dangerous, difficult, or toxic. I work for a mechanical company and we work with this all the time. I love scrapping at the end of every job, it makes quite a bit of money.

    My cousin and her husband do such recycling; it's beneficial to the climate and not horrible- at least here in the US. But, YES, recycling discharged CRTs can very hazardous.
