I am an O-Gauge/Scale person. I recently brought a Lionel KCS set to remember the Fallen Flag with because it is now CPKC !

My dad always had HO. Used to do huge layouts that took up the entire basement. He sold all his stuff before he passed though. I have some O, G, and used to have HO... been thinking of getting into N because I can do more with less space... but I have the most experience with HO, which is why I’m hesitant to go N. The kato stuff is so nice though.

I really like n scale for layouts that are scenery intensive but like HO and larger for layouts where you plan to have more industrial/switching operations. All personal preference. I want to do a small On30 layout at some point as well since the larger scale gives you more opportunity to add details and it is easier to see as the eyes get older.

The Lionel starter set would make a good "uncle present" because of the sound. It's a nice set, but if you give it to a child, it would go well with a drum set or a bugle.

I enjoyed your descriptions and demonstration of the 3 sizes and such. thank you very much.

In my single digit years, mom got me Lionel. I never likely it as the third rail seemed so unrealistic to me. Still does. I saw HO at the local hobby shops but I really liked NScale. You can do a lot more with the same space and can pack a lot into a small space. The smallest layout I built was 6'x3.5' and that was using 19" and 22" radius track. I really like that Kato set you showed.

I just got one today also, it’s sooo cool

I bought a Kato N scale Amtrak Superliner set in December,2011 plus extra Superliner cars & track. Since 2011 I have always set up my N scale train around the Christmas tree. I prefer Kato for N scale. I recently bought a N scale Kato Daylight 10 car set & the GS4 locomotive in Southern Pacific Daylight colors, that is going to be my excursion train. I’m in the process of getting a layout started for the future.

Jacobs Realm go with the Kato brand N scale for train sets, track. I have an Amtrak Superliner set from Kato which is now 11 Superliner cars, a baggage car & 2 P42 locomotives. I call my Superliner the Coast Starlightand I recently purchased a Kato N scale 10 car Morning(Coast)Daylight & a GS4 steam locomotive all in Southern Pacific Daylight colors which will be my excursion train.

@@michaelgmoore5708 Kato makes high quality HO scale stuff, too. I have a number of Kato HO locomotives and they're highly detailed and reliable. Bachmann is more hit or miss -- some of their stuff is really good, but some of their stuff is total crap.

@@michaelgmoore5708 Depends on what rolling stock you want, Minitrix (Märklin), Fleischmann, Piko, Roco, liliput,brawa, hobbytrain and a few more I forget the name of, all make quality N scale stock.

@@thesheq5023 Broadway Limited has had its fair share of lemons and their decoders aren't that good. They still use outdated decoders from the 2000's and the quality shows especially the way they sound which is awful. The only reason to go for Broadway Limited is steam engines. Diesels are a dime a dozen and better models available elsewhere.

Of course there are smaller scales than N, such as Z, TT, and T (I believe T is only sold in Japan). We have an old S Gauge American Flyer Set. Lionel still offers S Gauge, which is larger than HO but smaller than O. In the U.K. the best selling is OO Gauge, which is compatible with HO but it isn't as accurate scale wise as HO. The track is exactly the same though, so most OO Gauge trains will run on an HO layout, and vice-versa. In the U.S. you can get OO scale stuff thru Hornby Hobbies USA. There is a lot of rolling stock and locos of European and British prototypes in OO, but not much in the way or North American prototypes.

If you want a starter set for kids an O or 027 is better for small hands to place on rails. I bought a G gauge by LGB for our grand daughters and it is much more "play friendly " does not jump the track, the doors open for people and Lego block "cargo". The LGB is very tough and has endured for several years, Buildings are pricey, but animals, people, cargo, even milking machines for the dairy cattle are available at reasonable prices. The girls have made buildings out of boxes, colored construction paper, Lego blocks,etc. Keeps them thinking and building.

the 0 gauge set may be the lkids ,but you couild use this for modelling a shortline,with a bit of weathering,good solid equipent for a beginner.jpj

I'd like to buy a Kato N-gauge set myself, but it will be a Japanese one, as I'd like to run a Japanese passenger set (I think bullet trains and standard Japanese commuter trains are interesting.)

I run kato Shinkansen (and tgv and some chinese highspeed trains), started last year in november, I now have 8 trainsets, they are great, and prices of buying them in Japan from PlazaJapan or jp1999 is dirt cheap. The oldest one I have is a TGV model made in 1983, which runs just as great as the new ones (!)

I wonder why Lionel doesn't just go all the way and change the locomotive to battery power and eliminate the transformer? Interesting comparison.

You could convert this particular unit to battery power I think since there is only one motor. Might have to remove some weight. I didn’t open it up, but the motor is built into the truck. So the rest of the unit is just the receiver and sound board, speaker and weight. Of course the battery would probably up the price quite a bit.

Don't worry lionel does make battery powered sets

With as expensive as Lionel sets are to begin with, both trucks should be powered because you're most likely going to be using the locomotive to expand your train set and you'll most likely want two track rather than three track anyway and should include a controller to hold the interest of course, sound is unnecessary as is digital control unless the modeller wants to add that later and only if you choose to

The Kato track, locomotives, etc are all much better than the Bachmann ones, on average. Some of the Bachmann stuff is pretty decent, but overall the Kato stuff is better made and will last longer and perform better.

Do not buy bachmann stuff. It is the cheap junk of N scale. Only if you're giving it to kids to mess up. I didn't see the quality difference at first, now I do. Go with kato & micro trains

Nice sets. I wouldn't buy anything that you'll need a Smartphone to run your train with,my phone is not my life so I still own a flip phone.

Not directly, no. You would need to have a regular piece of sectional track connect between the two. You could use this adapter piece: amzn.to/2FHSciy if you trim off some of the plastic roadbed from the bachmann track I think. Or just use it plus a short section of regular sectional track to connect the two types.

Amazon inventory for these train sets is very low, if not sold out, as of December 1st 2020.

I like the Lionel O scale but never understood the unrealistic 3rd center rail. It would be cool to see a real 3rd rail, not sure if that exists and if it does I'm sure the price is out of sight of 99%.

The 3rd rail has to do with the electrical setup using AC current. In the old days when electric toy trains were first made, insulators weren't as good as they are now, and most electric trains were made of metal, so to prevent short circuits and run the motors safely, the outer rails are neutral ( - ) and the center rail is hot (+). One nice side benefit is that it removes the need to create insulating gaps as one needs to do in 2 rail DC operations for things like reversing loops and wyes, as the outer rails will always be neutral and the center will always be hot no matter how the track twists and turns. It's been retained largely for compatbility, as you can still use the antique trains and things like operating cars alongside modern equipment made today. Unreaslistic? Maybe, but simple to set up and do lots of neat things with the smaller gauges are only just now starting to do, like real loads and working loaders and unloaders.

HO is 1/87 so most Hot Wheels are bigger than HO scale. They are closer to S scale but it is hard to find things in S scale. So, HO scale is close enough probably. Hot Wheels are not a standard size. In the past I have used some on HO layouts that were closer to the right scale. As long as you don’t have the cars right next to an HO scale person or next to some structures or actual HO vehicles you can still probably pull it off.

The old die-cast Tootsie Toy cars are about the right size or HO. I found a bunch at a garage sale back in the 1990s and repainted them to look more realistic and they worked great with my layout back then.

i think oo gauge is the best for me

Would the n scale layout fit on a 6x2 1/2 foot table.

Yep, the width from outside of track roadbed to outside of track roadbed on the short axis would be something like 27” or so. With a 2.5 foot wide table you should have a 1.5-2” of space left on each side between the edge of the track roadbed and the edge of the table. On the long axis it doesn’t really matter as you can just add or omit sections of straight track to fill the table length. If you bought this set you could buy some 11” radius curve sections and some additional straight sections to make another loop that would fit just inside the one included in the set to have two full loops of track if you wanted to run two trains at the same time.

They typically all have sales at various times (most of the Kato stuff will be on sale together). Some vendors like ModelTrainStuff.com have a weekly email that goes out with different sales and such. Fifer hobby has an email with sales and specials and such too and probably most other shops have something similar. Those can be handy for finding out about sales.

Kato is also extremely cheap. Also you don’t need isolation track for sidings or yards, which is a big plus for beginners. Additionally there’s very little voltage drop considering the scale length. It’s very idiot friendly and plug and play :)

I have n scale ho scale o scale I am not lying it all first stated with ho scale I was up in the attic when I stumbled apon train cars and train engins now the story of n scale I was on ebay when I stumbled A bachmann starter n scale set it was the Santa fe warbonnet in n Scale now the story of o scale One day I was at aunts house it was Christmas she handed me this big Thing in paper I opened it was a Great Northern 4-4-2 Lionel And I just ordered a Norfolk Southern f unit in ho scale it's a bachmann starter train set I like trains and the outdoors

You can usually get it much cheaper but need to watch the sales and such. Summer is sort of “out of season” for model railroading stuff a lot of times.

I haven't bought any Kato N scale stuff other than a few pieces of Unitrack but the general consensus is that Kato N scale stuff is worth what you pay for it.

Overall there is more available in HO scale the O scale has plenty of options as well. 2 rail O scale has less available than 3-rail O scale though. One thing to keep in mind is that while O scale is more expansive in terms of individual items (structures, locomotives, rolling stock, etc) you will also probably use less of it. One O scale building can take up the space of a few HO buildings, for example. So the cost per square foot might not be much different. I enjoy the size and mass of the larger scales but obviously you can’t do as much in a given area with the larger scales. If you have the space, O scale can be nice I’d you enjoy switching operations and that kind of thing. But, if you want to watch 50 car trains running around a layout, it is a lot easier to do that in smaller scales. Or if you want to model large sweeping vistas with mountains, etc it is easier to do that in smaller scales in terms of space requirements. Of course eyesight can play a role too. I figure I might start doing On30 or something like that eventually since the details get harder to see in the smaller scales with age.

Generally, any sets much cheaper than these are going to be very low quality. The only one of these three that is of higher quality is the N scale Kato set the other two are fine starter sets but of lower overall quality. A single high quality HO locomotive with sound will generally cost a few hundred dollars by itself.

There is both 2 and 3 rail O scale. The 2 rail variety is generally to scale whereas 3 rail O is pretty loose with respect to being in scale. Some You can buy three rail locomotives and rolling stock that are in exact scale but a lot of it is not to scale to allow for much tighter radius curves to be used and so forth. The three rail design has both outside rails the same polarity and the middle rail the opposite so that layout wiring is much easier. No short circuits to worry about with reverse loops in the track design or other issues. Of course it looks much less realistic. Though you can buy track that has a blackened center rail to make it less visible.

@@StevesTrains Personally I like the vintage look of the old three rail with the three ties on each section of track. That's how I have all of my O scale set up at home. Granted most of my trains are vintage Lionel and my house was built in 1934... so that my have a lot to do with it. The fun part is everyone wants to come over and play with the trains. ;)

It’s more due to tradition due to the fact that o scale really started here in the us and they originally used it for the electric in the locomotive which they still do but it’s also due to it being able to support trains from all eras especially the older ones from post war

Joe Troiani. Any thing Bachmann is worthless to the experienced operator. Athern, Mantua, Marklin, Tyco, Lionel HO, And American Flyer HO are some of the good stuff from the 1950s Good luck and go to an expert at a big train show that will hopefully be honest. Dealers only offer ten cents on the dollar a lot of times.

I don’t have much experience with anything built prior to the 1990s except for a couple train sets I had as a kid in the 80s. I would try to made up a detailed inventory and you could probably take that to a train show or maybe find someone who could help with that on the model railroader forums or a place like that. If there is a longtime model train store in your area you might try and get ahold of the owner with that info. Those are few and far between anymore though.

The Lionel made for an 8 year old may last a little while before being broken but those other would not last a year in a kids hands.

Certainly varies by kid though. My 9 year old has done well with N scale trains for a few years, but then I’ve always had them around so that probably isn’t an typical data point. Probably results would be different if they had never had a train before then you gave them an N scale one at that age. I think most 10 year olds could do well with N scale but again probably varies. Certainly the younger the child the larger the scale for them to be able to have any success.

It is the new fashion for little girls to want scale model trains. Girls are creative and handle the trains more carefully than most boys. Young women are working as sales reps and higher positions for Lionel, Rapido and other model train mfrs. American flyer is perfect for women for size and attractiveness.

Clarinetboy82 - I'll be completely honest with you by saying from the outset that I am not a purist when it comes to track types whether they are ezi, uni, or flexi. With a creative flare, some imagination, enough time, well spent and deployed resource and of course the will, one can make anything look and seem like anything. Some of the results I've seen both at exhibitions and via video presentations by those willing to exercise those aspects I mention have been amazing to the point that in many cases one would literally have to completely dis-assemble a layout to discern the pedigree of it's components. If a set by Kato with it's set curves, lengths and easy to assemble parts brings more people to the joy of rail and then inturn inspires some of those "newbies" to get creative and customise their layouts, however toyish they might seem in the eyes of others more established and dare I say traditional in their tastes, then that can only be a good thing. I fully suppose that in time, viewpoints like my own and I'm guessing yours too, concerning the blue-buck-toothed, villi-wified, conart-computerised and almost entirely bastardised control methods I am complaining about now will be more commonplace as the tech and it's integration into our beloved form of rail-creation improves. You hear some say that theirs was a military family... As a child, mine was that of the Railways, uncles, cousins, parents, grand parents etc... Oddly enough I didn't grow up with the fun of rail... My father was a signalman for about twenty five years in the sixties, seventies and early eigthies who could operate any signal box in Victoria (Australia). The changes he saw and had to adapt to were many and subtle but he new that if he didn't maintain the mindset to keep up with the changes in the tech involved he'd fall behind, loose track(pardon the pun) and his career would de-rail(sorry again). Maybe if the older and current custodians want to remain relevant to the passion, to attract the next generations to the cause, we (and yes I dare to include myself in that cadre,) are going have to be open minded, more inclusive and less derisive or risk in becoming a fringe oddity in our own blessed obsession. I'd still wish for better internet coverage though.... jus sayin...

The ez track is okay for those who like it, I just always liked the traditional track. What turns me off is that I don't have access to certain features of locomotives/train sets unless I have a smart phone/tablet.

Only mainly true at lower price points. I think the main difference is that there is a larger spread in quality and price. Although there really aren’t that many higher quality sets available. Usually you have to put those together yourself from individual components.

Lots of old HO scale stuff on eBay for dirt cheap. It won't be the newest, top of the line stuff but like anything in life you pay a premium for top shelf.

It seems a shame that in another forty years , give or take , model trains wont exist anymore .The younger generations starting with millennials and up find them boring .Not only that but they wont have the hands on skills ,modelling and such .Most wont ever know the feeling of creating something with their hands.

I think it'll be around for a while longer, especially in Europe. If we could get an American version of the wonderland that would be awesome.

I know a lot of my friends that are around my age or younger that love this hobby most of em are into o scale but some are into ho I myself love o scale but I enjoy the higher end stuff more often especially when they’re good deals at train shows

Blame the government and American geography. Those two things killed the American rail industry before millenials were even born. Government subsidized airports and highways along with ever increasing time constraints left railroads to rot forcing them to close up shop so they have faded into obscurity in American life. If people don't see or know about it they won't be interested in it. Railroads are seen now as a nuisance during a commute rather than an asset or something to model as a hobby.
