A Look At The Olympus E-M10 Mark lll Micro Four Thirds Camera

Olympus's E-M10 mark ll was my favourite Olympus. Now here's the Mark lll. Is it a big step up or just an incremental one? Is it a step up at all?

    @Mr Dominic New or old age lingo but its use to explain (didn't know we need to use old age lingo) I meant by holistic is covers factors that help you have an understanding of what to expect. It doesn't mean you are coming out of this an expert but you have a good idea in a nutshell what to expect. I look forward to seeing his reviews and believe he is one of the best for M43. This is an opinion doesn't make anything a fact if he doesn't meet your expectations.

    I bought the mark III after watching your video and love it, everything you said was pretty much spot on, although as a novice most of your negatives against the camera were of no issue to me particularly because I had never owned the mark II. 2 programable buttons is more than enough especially with the super control panel button, but that's my perspective. Either way your videos definitely help.

    The smallest E-M10, whatever the Mark, always make me wonder why any camera has to be bigger. I'm glad the videos helped and if you are starting out the Mrk III is a great camera to do it on. In point of fact, outside of specialist subjects like birds in flight, the E-M10 III does pretty much everything you'd likely need.

    I decided just under a year ago (after a brief discussion with you in comment thread) to go with the mkii over the mkiii and I’m really happy with it. I’ve pretty much stuck with that and the meike manual focus portrait lense. It has brought back the enjoyment I had shooting film 18 years ago on my old Pentax K1000.

    Hi David, I'm one of your biggest fans and I was wondering if you ever do not like a product. I so much enjoy seeing & hearing ANYTHING reviewed by you. Happy New Year!

  • @DavidThorpeMFT

    @DavidThorpeMFT

    5 жыл бұрын

    Happy New Year to you! An unlikely problem recurs in reviewing Micro Four Thirds equipment in that there is practically nothing that is actually bad, by which I mean badly made or badly designed or poor value. I long ago learned that some attributes I value mean little to other people and some things I couldn't care less about are vital to others. What I try to do is evaluate a lens or camera dispassionately without my personal prejudices coming into it and then at some point let my opinions into the equation. The little Olympus here is a good example. In itself it is an excellent camera capable of stunning results. My fault with it is that I don't think Micro Four Thirds equipment at this level is ideal for casual users. Too complicated. A more casual user would be better off with a bridge camera while someone who wanted to get to grips with serious photography would find the E-M10 lll limiting quite quickly. The Mark ll would serve them better. That, however, is just my opinion which is why I remain polite in my criticism. I was particularly pleased to read a comment here from someone who had seen my review and decided this was the camera for them. I'd never be happy trying to persuade someone to buy or not buy an item. All I seek to do is supply a basis for making a decision. That all sounds a bit too grand, really. In the end, I just love handling these gems of digital technology and seeing what I can do with them. Thanks for the kind words and observations - it provided me with food for thought.

    For the original price, you might think it's not the smartest choice to get the E-M10 III. But right now in Australia, you can get this camera for 850AUD (449pounds) with 2 kit lens + Free 25mm f1.8 which is basically a steal. (check your local Olympus website for this promo). For its target audience, the Mark III is a more sensible option because it's just a point and shoot on steroid. I have friends who use the Mark II complaining about how confusing the settings are and ended up not using all of the features and discouraged to use it. As an E-M5 II user, yes I can totally feel David's opinion about how restricting it is for a veteran/enthusiast to use this camera. So the plan: If you know what you are doing with an OM-D camera photographically and you have a main camera like E-M5 II/III or E-M1 II, get the E-M10 II, don't bother with the E-M10 III because it's gonna drive you crazy. If you have E-M1 II and video work is your primary, alright E-M10 III is perfect B-camera for you to get, double 4K run and gun combo. If you are new and learning how to use a camera, get an E-M10 III and later upgrade to E-M5 III (still so expensive right now) or E-M1 II if you feel the need to. Hope this helps P/S: I went a big round from Olympus to Lumix to Fujifilm to Canon to Sony and back to Olympus, that must say something ;) Edit: fix grammar and typo

    Hi. I'd be interested to know your opinion please in 2021? I have just sold all my canon DSLR gear and bought myself an Olympus em1 mark ii. I still have an em10 mark i. and plan to use as my second body. I have the 12-40 pro already which I now plan to pair with the em1 ii. I have the 17mm 1.8 which I plan to pair with the em10, plus the kit 40-150. I aim to save up and grab a copy of the 45mm 1.8 maybe (portrait mostly) and 70-300mm. This means I have a great combo in the 12-40 and em1 ii for about 80% of my photography, plus the rest to cover other interests I have in lightweight street photography and long zoom wildlife, sports etc. All this in a package a lot smaller and lighter than my original canon gear. My question is I have seen the em10 iii now for a very good price (grey import £329 body but from UK seller). Is it worth the upgrade from the mark I in 2021 if I plan to use as a second lighter body on occasions or as a backup? I know the em10iii has improved IS, AF, EVF and 4k video (which I don't really intend to use) but I do like the fact the original em10 is metal body, and more sophisticated apparently in its menus and functions etc? Just interested to know your thoughts please if possible, although I think I may have answered my own question? Thanks.

    This review is a heartbreaker! I love this camera. Maybe because I never shot with the ii and started with the iii. I have grown to see it's limitations through time but the camera has taught me a lot. It's given me confidence in street photography because of the small form factor. I've filmed vlogs with the video settings (although it took time for me to learn the best settings). Thanks for the honesty but there is real value in this camera, it's image quality and overall ease of use is great. I have some photos on instagram with this camera under @drixpics.

  • @DavidThorpeMFT

    @DavidThorpeMFT

    5 жыл бұрын

    I couldn't see much difference but the ultimate performance is set by the RAW file of course. In other words, the JPG output will always be a matter of what compromise the maker (or user) chooses between detail and noise. I prefer to shoot RAW and make my own choices but the makers know what they are doing and you can't go wrong with their JPG output. I personally favour detail over noise reduction more than the makers do, though even then they offer tweaks to their own JPG files.

    Thanks for the video! I'm looking at a bunch of m4/3 models, and this video might have tipped me closer to the Olympus camp for my next camera. Most of the m4/3 cameras have excellent quality photos to me, so I'm looking more at what a system provides ergonomically. I once owned a sweet OM-2 rig back in the film era (early 1990s). The motor winder was my favorite accessory for that camera. I used plenty of film... addictive piece of gear for action shots. I never got to try the behemoth 240 shot adapter. One think I do prefer from Olympus vs Panasonic is the focus point grid. Moving from predefined point to point is much quicker (for me at least) than waiting for the Panasonic small box to track all the way across the screen and certainly feels more familiar to my old Nikon DSLRs. Not sure whether this also applies to the G9 but they are very different price points.

    Imo the EM10 III is worth it for the stabilisation. It's a dealbreaker for me for taking photos and videos, it just really helps with shots longer than a second. As for video, IBIS works even in 4K which is nice. 4K output too is pretty good for Olympus' second camera to feature it (so long as you don't raise your ISO too much ofc), but the G7 might be better in terms of 4K IQ just cuz of Panasonic. G7 doesn't have IBIS though. But I don't have the G7, just the EM10 III so take my word with a grain of salt.

    Despite your very honest review, I just purchased the EM-10 Mk III from Olympus, body only. Amazingly, Olympus USA is still keeping the Mk II in stock, and they're selling it for the same price! They must not be selling all that well, because either body can be had, brand new, for just $450 USD. The one killer feature that might make the Mk III a better buy for my needs is the improved low-light focusing, which will certainly be appreciated. Sadly, Olympus is not the only camera maker to give their customer less when it comes to iterating new models, the same happened, sadly, when Nikon replaced the D7200 with the D7500....many features and options were removed in the "newer" camera, the only obvious improvement was, again, focusing. Thanks again for such excellent, honest reviews.

How the camera makers get that over to the potential photographers out there I don't know. One problem must be that the makers need to sell all the time yet the modern cameras have been plenty good enough for most photographers for the few 10 years. By introducing new models that have fewer features, the incentive to upgrade is gone so they have to attract sales new sales. If there was an easy answer I'm sure the big makers would jump on it. Maybe we'll see a consolidation - Panasonic's link with the Leica mount might be a way to go but maybe Canon and Nikon will be forced to merge some time. 5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ma'ruf In many respects the Pen F is an EM10 mark ll with a 20Mp sensor and a prettier body and I wouldn't see any real point in upgrading other than you preferred the form factor and looks. The 20Mp sensor is nice but you wouldn't see any improvement (is any needed?) in day to day use. The E-M2 Mark ll is a different matter and is the most effective Micro Four Thirds from Olympus so far. However, unless you plan on covering lots of sports and fast moving subjects or feel the need for technical add-ons like focus stacking and Hi Res modes, it won't offer any advantage to you and while it is not big, you will lose the sheer ease of use and portability of your E-M10. For late night photos, neither upgrade would improve things materially, certainly nowhere near as much as a good tripod would. The E-M1 does have improved stabilization which might help a bit but in very dim light a tripod will still give better results since you can use 200 ISO without a qualm.

Panasonic lenses work as well with PDAF on the Olympus E-M1 Mkll as Olympus lenses so I don't see why they wouldn't work with Panasonic's own PDAF. The DfD technology relies on a database of lens out of focus characteristics which is why Olympus lenses don't work with DfD. There's no question that PDAF has more potential in my book, though it can't match DSLRs because of the relative slowness of the PD pixels having to be read off the sensor linearly. With a DSLR the Phase Detection continues working even when the exposure is being made because it has a dedicated array that is unaffected by exposure r mirror blackout.

As for any "professional instrument" you have to spend time with them and learning their quirks and their inner merits. Most reviewer shifting form this to that camera dismiss a 2 year old m43 because it's "Just 16Mp" and because it's "entry level" or "Not Full frame". They complain because menus are complex and "difficult to understand" (for someone which as spent just 2 hours with them), so they plauded at the Olympus Em10MkIII since it abided more to their idea of an easy to use entry level, which M43 as a system is not! My preferred camera, the one I always pick up, is the EM5MkII, albeit I own a GX9, which has 5 years less and 20 Mp sensor, but I know what that "old" olympus can do and I know it outperforms many of the modern cameras in such a small package. I learned the dreaded Olympus menu layout and I know how much control it gives to me. I could sell the GX9 with it's "Friendly menu system" tomorrow without regrets, but I would not depart willingly from my trusty Olympus because I know I would instantly regret it.

    Honestly as a first step up camera from a phone this camera still has the goods. Better focus system than the mk2, modern 4K video and a much easier to follow menu. They were on sale here in Australia over Christmas for $510 after $150 cash back that’s almost half of the release price and it had the 14-42mm pancake lens with it too. More than enough to keep a newbie entertained. Nothing else came close at that price and it has the great image stabilization too. Its not all bad. Think of who it’s aimed at. Everyone else will be catered for this year by Olympus from the rumours going around I believe.

    I see Micro Four Thirds as more than a step up from a phone camera - a step up would be a bridge camera in my opinion. As a starter camera, this camera is just too expensive, especially compared to the cheaper Mark ll.

    There’s a big sale here in Aus that started yesterday and the mk3 is cheaper than the mk2! I think it’s the perfect step up for a keen phone photographer looking to up their game especially with the easier to understand menu. It leaves the Canon and Nikon entry level cameras at the same price for dead.

    Wholeheartedly agree. To add one more to the cons list, no grip available to the mark III version. The only thing i miss from my mark II, is that the mark III is finally able to record proper quality video, but all the rest of this camera is a big no no, i would definitely buy the mark II again, instead of the mark III.

    Is this a repeat of the XA? Where the first two models were cool, but somewhat retarded from the third model onwards.

    The sad summary is that, like Panasonic, Olympus is intent to relegate M43 to the “intentionally kept mediocre” in order to kill the format. First the GX9 “idiot cousin” to the GX8. Now this. Sad really.

    My first thought when he showed the finish, was "Plastic"? Like Canon tried to fool us with on the AE-1. Very Toylike of Olympus!!!

    Yes. In fairness the plastics are probably just as strong but it just doesn't feel as good.

    sounds as though Olympus can't be bothered. just cost cutting after more money. sad that there is no passion to improve the camera. Panasonic gx9 is better.

    It’s not often you express a “meh” for a MFT camera! What a disappointment, I hope it doesn’t signal a shifting of focus away from the system. It’s the lack of 20MP sensor I find most baffling...

    True - I find this camera underwhelming and that is unusual for me. I approach Micro Four Thirds cameras expecting to like them and this is one of the few disappointments. It's in no way a bad camera just 'meh', as you say. I hadn't thought of it as shifting focus away - I do hope not but bringing out a 16Mp camera at this stage of the Micro Four Thirds game is bizarre. Not a big deal in itself but indicative.

    You can spend less and get the E-M10 Mark II. That;s what I expect, I suppose. The III is still a good camera and I do say that.
