A Look At The Mitakon Speedmaster 17mm F/0.95 Fast Wide-Angle Lens for Micro Four Thirds Cameras

Ғылым және технология

Once fabled and exotic, there are more f/0.95 lenses around now than there were, especially for Micro Four Thirds cameras where the extra depth of field makes them more practically useful at full aperture. I've come to expect a trade-off in overall performance for that full stop advantage over even an f/1.4 lens but there's little evidence of it with this Mitakon. To cap it all, the Mitakon is a 17mm focal length mild wide-angle, widely regarded as an ideal do-it-all prime lens. It is a manual lens and sells at a remarkably low price for such a beast, around £300/ US$399.

The Mitakon is superb, especially given the price. The Olympus Pro is just about perfect in every way and I do feel it justifies its price. Class leading AF, absurdly sharp, no nasties at all. For street, you might find the Pro best - you can leave it at f/1.2 and let the AF take care of it. A difficult choice.

I've had the 10.5 and 42.5 and love/hated those lenses like nothing else. The 10.5 was great for my style of street, astro and architecture shooting. Not the sharpest lens ever but felt amazing and made pleasing images. The 42.5 wide open is not sharp. It does however make the most beautiful unsharp photos I've ever seen. It is pure magic butter wide open. CA like a mofo and the bokeh looks atrocious if you stop down at all. Highlights are really jagged and ugly but sharpness and ca both improve. Focuses very very close for a portrait focal length. Not at all good for moving subjects but if you can work slow and take your time... its not a perfect lens but it has a unique character that I'd defy you not to love.

"So here's mine..." LOL! Interesting lens. Like the Leica Distagon, it looks like its signature look is wide open. Nice look. I used a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 on my Canon for 4 years. Completely manual focus. I didn't even have the focusing aids that you get on more modern cameras. Completely fine. In a way, it's kind of fun. Makes you feel like a more 'real' photographer. While I wouldn't say this is up to the optical quality of the Leica Nocticron and doesn't have AF... For 1/3 the price of the Leica, it's a pretty sweet deal. Thanks David!

Jeremy Wickersheimer good decision. I also had the 25er and than ordered the 17mm as soon as I read about it. It's a lot better than the 25 honestly! It's much larger and heavier, but balances better on my G81, and the focus ring is a bit further forward and therefore more easily usable. It also comes with a metal lens hood (very nice) and the focus ring is really nicely dampened. Thanks to that dampening and the larger diameter focusing is much simpler on the 17mm as well! Throughout my one week trip in Berlin I had not a single shot with missed focus (and honestly no other lens on the camera as well :D ). Optically it's surperior as well I'd say, specially in terms of flaring. Which was quite bad on the 25mm across the entire frame and no only really occurs in a much more tame way in the corners. So I think the 17 is a real improvement over the 25 from Zhong Yi!

The low light quality of all the Micro Four Thirds is much the same now that they are all using the 20Mp sensor so that's not a factor. They all have peaking, too. I'd go for the GX9, though the smallish EBF might put you off. In which case, take a look at one of the Olympus E-M10s.

Regards from Stockholm again David! I'm trying to master a combination of a 0.64 Metabones coupled with a AF Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4D lens on my GH5. I get a huge amount of light, but I have not yet really learnt how to use it. Not that I'm ready to surrender yet, but how much of a difference in light reception do you think there would be between this setup and the Mitakon, or for that matter, the Voightländer 17mm 0.95? I've seen used Voightländers here in Sweden for as little as 600 usd equivalent. I think I can get the price down to 500 as one of them has been up for sale since 10 December.

In theory they'd all be very similar in light transmission certainly close enough not to be any practical difference. I haven't tried the Voigtlander but I hear good things. None will be easy to use, though. That wide, wide aperture gives little margin for error.

I have reviews on both of them so you might like to take a look at those. The 17mm is more of an all round useful lens, the 15mm more of a wideangle. I prefer the 17mm and it has become a standard almost for street photography. Performance wise, both lenses are excellent so it's really a choice between slightly wide or wider.

I didn't like the high contrast of the sigma; it's deep blacks lose detail but it is a ridiculously sharp lens, instead I bought a second copy of the Pana leica 15mm f1.7 because it has more character and is a pleasure in use. If I was using it mostly for scenery I would consider the sigma for its amazing sharpness. But since I mainly shoot people in groups I decided the PL15 is best and gives more pleasure. Hauke, take the Sigma 16mm 1.4. Bokeh is great, and AF works super-fast. I use it in a Lumix G85 and AF Face Detections works perfect. Low light performance is great. Bokeh balls are rounded and beautiful. Manual lens makes your workflow more slow, and with a 0.95 it is very easy go out-of-focus. It is not the same manual focus of a 2.0 lens, than in a 0.95. Take this in mind. A Sigma 1.4 is very sharp and that half stop of aperture compared to 0.95 makes focusing more reliable without impacting to low-light performance. The Sigma 16mm 1.4 was designed for APS-C, so it provides a lot of light to your MFT sensor, in some way, it is like a speed booster. In conclusion, the Mikaton may be fun, but the Sigma is superb and makes your life easier.

I'd say the Sigma is the more general purpose lens . It is still pretty damn fast, its' very sharp and it does have the AF. It's a hard decision but I'd say you need to know you really want the extra stop of speed to justify the Mitakon.

Funny Onions while I can't speak for the sigma 16mm, I use the Mitakon 17mm on a G81, so I hope I can help you a bit with my experiences. First off I'd estimate the 0.95 lens will give you about 1 stop or 2/3rd of a stop more light. Additional light gathering capability at these apertures drops off quiet quickly with MFT. Nevertheless it might reasonably give you another stop or so reduced ISO, which is always nice. However the sigma is going to be optically superior specifically in the corners. At f0.95 the corners have a rather dramatic ghosting and flaring effect, and while I don't really mind it as I hardly put my subjects in the far corners of the frame...you might. The center of the 17 f0.95 is however pretty well controlled, far more so than with mitakons 25mm f/0.95 which I also own. The latter had rather extreme flaring throughout the entire frame, while the 17mm is far more controlled in that regard. As I see it, it depends on wether you are interested in the additional shallowness of depth of field or not. If you don't really care about that, go with the sigma. Losing 1 stop of light is likely manageable and your going to enjoy optically clean pictures. However there rely only is one other lens in the MFT system that can compare to this one in terms of DoF, and I'd consider this the real strength of the lens. The additional light gathering should be more or less considered a bonus IMO. Anyways I personally enjoy this lens (and camera combo). I don't mind some flaring in the corners and stuff like that, if anything it makes pictures a bit more interesting, but that's a question of personal preference. And I'd consider the shots with this lens at f0.95 very usable for sure, at least I have not run across a situation where a picture turned out to not look good enough to keep or print or use it. Hope I was of some help to you!

@@emptystring6833 Wow, thanks a lot for the detailed response! I don't mind ghosting or flaring that much but on the other hand I don't need the DoF and I enjoy sharp pictures. Thanks again for helping out!

Thanks, Tjerk! I think that with a wide angle like this the main point is really the light gathering capacity. if you really want shallow DoF a longer lens is better, of course but it is useful to have such a level of control of it available. There's a price to pay, of course and for most people a 17mm f/1.8 is plenty good enough.

For the most accurate focusing you need to focus wide open but if you want to stop down you have to move the camera, look at the lens, stop down and check the finder again all of which destroys the accurate focus. In ancient times we had "preset" manual which is much more convenient. Why don't they make presets anymore?

I don't know, lenses like this are very interesting, but I bought MFT to have a small and light camera bag. I have a 1.2/50mm and hardly use it because even though it's fun to use a fully manual lens, it's too big and heavy and doesn't bring enough advantages compared to the Olympus 1.8/45mm. If you want shallow depth of field, you're better off switching to full frame. Might even be cheaper in the long run.

Thanks for the review. I'd like to comment the statement you make at 3:42 however. A 35mm f0.95 will not be "equivalent" to this 17mm f/0.95 on m43. A 35mm f1.8 would. As a full frame sensor gathers about 4x as much light as a m43 sensor. ISO800 on FF is comparable to ISO200 on m43. So a 35mm f1.8 lens on a FF camera would be about "equivalent" to this lens on m43, but it will be much sharper with less aberrations. Look at the Samyang 35mm f1.8 for example. Of course, this has no relevance if you don't shoot FF.
