A look at the M5-1 Bayonet

The M5 Bayonet was the last bayonet designed for the iconic M1 Garand Rifle. Contrary to popular belief, the M5 Bayonet entered official service with the US Military shortly after the Korean War cease fire. However, it would see action during the Cold War and with American Allies in the Vietnam War.

Very interesting! My dad was in the 11th ABN during WWII and was issued an M1 Garand. he didn't like the issue bayonet and acquired an M1 Carbine bayonet, which he carried on his hip as a fighting knife.

BushcraftWoodsDevil, my dad was a BAR gunner with the 3rd Infantry Division. He was supposed to be issued an M3 trench knife according to all accounts. He insisted he was issued a Mk2 Fighting Knife; essentially the Marine Corps “KaBar”. My bet is he got a Navy MkII which looked identical to the KaBar. And he knew the difference between the two knives. He said the officers and paper pushing supply clerks got the M3s! If wanted one he’d have to buy it from some REMF. Wars and the military never change.

My dad said the BAR was very accurate. He said you could put a fifty gallon drum at 100 yards and cut it in half.

Not sure about that but my dad said that BAR gunners routinely stripped everything off the rifle that wasn't permanently attached to reduce the weight! He also said it was extremely easy to fire what shot at a time even on full auto because of the rate of fire. He also felt at ranges beyond 400 yards it was more accurate than the M1. Despite its limitations, he loved the thing.

Sounds about right. We had national guard units in Illinois still using M14s in 1975, however. This bayonet came from a Marine who served from 1956-59. I have an even earlier M1 bayonet from a n Army vet who was around the same time.

Thanks for that information. I know you has mentioned that the M5 was recalled and modified to M5 1 or M5 -1. My dad served in the Tropical Lightening in Korea and Vietnam. He passed in 2018. I setup a memorial display for him and found his M5 Imperial. It appears to be the pre recalled version. Just thought i should mention it.

Just an early M5, then. The difference are minor and many of the M5 were upgraded without being marked, or so I've been told. It has to do with the latch on the back, a piece that is easily swapped out.

Good overall information, but you need to make one correction. You state that Utica was one of the 4 manufacturers of the M5A1, and this is incorrect. Utica only made the M5. The 4th manufacturer of the M5A1 was actually Milpar. The remaining contractors, Imperial, Aerial and J&D Tool, made both versions of this bayonet.

0:28 I noticed that the m8 or m8a1 scabbard has a lace on it, did the scabbard came with that or did the soldiers just add them on their scabbards? I also have an m8 scabbard with a lace on it, I'm just curious.

I have a Danish M5A1 it has some minor differences the plastic piece on the handel are mat black apposed to the shiny look of the originals it also uses phillips screw and the stud on the cross guard isn't rounded like the American versions. Over all I would say it's not as good as the American versions the molded plastic is lower quality and there are machining marks on the blade.

I purchased a beautiful 1969 Colt SP-1 a while back and it came with a bayonet. I knew it was incorrect immediately, but wasn't too concerned with it. So, doing some research it appears to be a version of an M5. It has no markings whatsoever except on the inside of one of the scales. There's what looks like a serial number printed in white. Also, instead of the gas lug pin it has a barrel ring. Have you seen these? Any info would be great, thanks.
