A Look at Lucian Freud’s Etchings with David Dawson

Get a rare glimpse inside the studio of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century as Lucian Freud’s former assistant David Dawson explains how the artist returned to etching later in life. Now the director of the Lucian Freud Archive, Dawson reveals how Freud’s late portrait etchings capture the physical, psychological and emotional conditions of his sitters, including his daughter Bella, his stepson Kai and his mother Lucie Freud. Beyond his family, Freud conveyed the humanity of other subjects close to him, including his lawyer Lord Goodman, his art dealer William Acquavella and his muse ‘Big Sue’ Tilley. Working with master printer Marc Balakjian, Freud created a series of remarkable works that show his mastery of the medium. Ten of these portrait etchings, from the Blema and H. Arnold Steinberg Collection, are highlights of our upcoming sale Made in Britain (10 September | London).

I turned one of his portrait paintings into a B&W image, I was shocked. The brushstrokes were so so identical to his etchings. I was mind blown, inspires me to try some etching drawings

try messing with cutout filter in photoshop, or threshold. It doesntmatter what settings or amount of layers, Freud's images will come out fantastic every single time, because he is a brilliant draftsman. Its an education to see how and where he places lights darks , contrasting form either side of the face, acute awreness of subtle underlying interconnected structures etc. Same thing happens with Rembrandt, another consummate draftsman

@@ThoughtPumpkin0 Another good experiment is to get PHOTOPEA (free to download image editor that works in a browser) and try the "vectorize bitmap" filter. Slower than photoshop, but fascinating nevertheless. If you are like me and have difficulty deciding where to place tones and values, studying with those things helps enormously. Not in the sense of copying a ditial image, but training they eye to be more precise and more observant. Have a good look, and good luck

@@GOLDSMITHEXILE THank you , Ill look into that :D. I too struggle greatly when it come to values and tones yes. Also with colors but thats only when I paint from a photo ref. I really would like to train my eye to throughly flesh out the tones and values. Squinting my eyes usually help.
