A look at ELF, the solar-powered bicycle-car hybrid

It's called the ELF, a solar-powered bike-car hybrid that's turning up in cities across the country. Costing $5,500, the transportation requires no insurance or gasoline. Vicente Arenas took a test drive and talks about how the bike-car hybrid works.

    Saw them a few years ago in the city. The price is high because the market for e bike cars is super high. So companies always have to overcharge them. Most of these bike like inventions shouldn't cost more than 1.5k

    I've had a Mango-colored ELF, with the standard 3-gears, for four months. I LOVE it. My neighbors all admire it hugely. I am currently riding about ten to eighteen miles a day. Fabulous (and fun) exercise! I no longer take my car the 4 mile round trip to the supermarket, there's a lockable cargo hold under the back window, great for a couple of grocery bags, or for books from the County Library. I am past the age of wanting to ride a 2-wheel bike. I know enough physics to know that a tricycle is more stable (that's why milking stools always were three-legged and not four-legged). And I figure that the Center of Gravity is below my seat, even when I'm in the ELF. We have lots of hills where I live (community built around a drowned river valley) so I would never have bought a tricycle without a helpful motor to get me up all those hills. The seat is very comfortable and is sort of a hammock made of a sturdy mesh, comfortable even in high 90F weather (at which time I ride with the back window rolled up to encourage a breeze to come past me). I ride my ELF even when there is heavy rain. If you're moving forward in heavy rain, the rain blows past the opening. Being out in the rain is good, also: the rain washes the ELF and when I get home I use an old soft bath towel to dry off the windows, and everything sparkles again. I wouldn't want doors: in case there is a cross-wind that hoped to tip me over when I'm stopped at an intersection waiting to make a turn, and when I'm stopped I DO have a chance of a bit of rain slanting in at me if it's coming diagonally. I am not planning to ride the ELF when the roads are junked up with snow and salt and sand - however, where I live the roads are in decent riding condition on days between snowfalls. LOTS of lights on the ELF if you are riding after dark - you're very visible at day AND at night. Some afternoons I'm enjoying myself riding around and I don't want to come home just because it's sunset. No gasoline to buy, no annual registration fees, and it's covered under my Household Insurance not under any extra Auto Insurance. AND it is Made in the USA.

    +Edith-ann Zecca A three-legged stool is not more stable than a four-legged stool, it just doesn't require the ground to be even for all legs to be on the ground. As for registration fees, that depends on where you live.

    It is probably because it is impractical, expensive, and dangerous, with a very limited use. Most people who first embrace ideas like this do it from an emotional level... and then, over time, the faults become apparent, and they fade away.

    The petroleum fuel depletion issues will take place in a few decades from now and perhaps less than even that.When that takes place a vehicle such as this will become a preferred necessity rather than a oddity.However if you really care about the anthropocence sixth extinction event issues,global warming and ocean acidification issues this is a great idea for transportation.

    No, there is no real problem. Some use bike clip shoes and I use the platform pedals with heel cups. If you foot slips off it is more likely to go up, not slam down onto the pavement. This is a very tiny hazard that has not proven to be of concern for trike riders and it is far outweighed by the collision protection advantage the body shell provides.

    misrepresentation, it's a solar trickle charger, not a solar powers bike. 6 to 8 hours to charge a little bitty battery. after research I find the pebl to better quality

  • @popeyegordon

    @popeyegordon

    7 жыл бұрын

    No not a trickle charge - 80 watts in high sun is much more than a trickle. For every 10 minutes of sun you can run the motor for one minute. This works so well that I return home with an 80 to 90% charge on my battery after running local errands during which I am parking in the sun and seeing the charge current reduce my motor power draw while riding. The PEBL weighs 35 pounds more and they charge extra for the solar roof. Unlike the ELF's 3 million road miles logged, 850 sold and 5 car collisions with no injuries the PEBL is still unproven, only prototypes exist. I wish them luck as their factory is gearing up right now. Competition is good but as of today April 8 2017 there is no competition on the market for the ELF.

    @@normchandok4432 What you think does not matter. Only the facts of the design are relevant, and that is not up for debate. I am an expert owner of the ELF who used it as my only transportation for 7 years. This is the safest trike ever made in all history! It has high visibility compared to a bicycle. It has the safety of the body shell's crumple zones, it has all lighting and signals and horn like a car. I am respected in traffic by other vehicles. I use a bike lane or trail or sidewalks where available but am not limited to that. We all have the sense and courtesy to pull over if we are backing up traffic behind us. Owners have taken this ELF on cross country trips of 3000 to 54,000 miles. One is still going today. No one has ever been killed in an ELF because it is so safe and appropriate to use in traffic compared to a basic bicycle.

    Keep in mind that $5,500 price doesn't include things like the doors which are an option but are $200 EACH or the carbon fiber panels. The frame is made of trylon, the same thing kayaks are made of=plastic. As far as pedaling to go 30mph: I couldn't pedal that fast & I'm sure I'm not alone. At least you'd get a workout.

    PuertoRican88 how much will they cost though & are they going to be locking doors? The 2 problems with this are that if you want any options it can easily end up costing almost the price of a car, which is nuts & it has no theft protection. For me it would be basically a $10,000 trike.

    +bahrta sai Hey, were you using the electric assist at the same time? The electric motor can get you up to 20 mph without pedaling, but you would have to be on flat ground. Then when you add onto that by pedaling, 30 mph becomes possible. I personally haven't broken 30 mph, but I know two people who work with me that have gotten over 30 mph (but they used the momentum of going downhill to power into it).

    What this would have going for it is that it wouldn't need the infrastructure for refueling (no gas stations? no problem). However, most of the world does have that infrastructure. And for the bits that don't, it's probably easier to go with more conventional options such as an off road bicycle, a horse, or bringing fuel with you. In spite of this, I'm sure it can't be long before someone attempts the challenge of riding one of these things around the world (although it would take a while, and local legislation would be a nightmare).
