A Look at Cinderella NHL Runs From 1981 Through 2023

If Vegas finish off the West, the Panthers would faced the #1, #2, #4 and #5 teams. Winning the Cup? That would be the most impressive run I think I've ever seen.

@@edited1325 I don't think it's as big of a spread as you're giving credit for, though I, even as a kings fan, think if convincingly done, could top the 12 kings. The catch is the panthers have already lost as many games as the kings did in their run : they posted a 16-4 record. And I do have to subtract some points for the panthers taking on Toronto of the perpetual implosions.

@@edschramm6757 17th team taking out 4/5 top 5 teams (1, 2, 4, and 5 seed) especially with the first series coming back from 1-3 against the best regular season team in nhl history. I think as long as they hoist the cup its more impressive, but I can see Kings fans still saying their run was more impressive if it goes 6 or 7.

@edschramm6757 imagine if Florida sweeps Vegas though. It would easily be the most dominant and incredible cup run ever. Beating 1, 2, 4 and 5 seeded teams with a 16-4 record. Coming back after a 3-1 deficit to go 15-1 the rest of the way would be bonkers.

Great story Mask. I think all of us by summer '21 was ready to return to a 'new post COVID normal" (life will never be the same pre 2020)after over a year of most of us in Canada/US and Worldwide being in a global jail. Still hate to say it but HABS run to the 2021 Cup Final has an asterisk being in that frankly very weak NHL North aka All "Canada" division. Still Price almost won them a title single handily so he deserves props.

The fact that they started it all by defeating Toronto makes it extra special: crazy to think this is the only series between the two since the late 70's. And then, winning against Vegas on St-Jean-Baptiste Day was so magical it almost felt scriped. The thing that made the Kings' 2012 run even more impressive was the fact that it only took them 20 games to win the Cup. They swept the Blues, beat Vancouver and Phoenix in five and beat the Devils in 6. Edmonton was the only team since the playoffs expanded to do it in less games. They did it in 18 games in 1988 but they were a powerhouse at the time.

They were a team that year that took a lot of penalties and during the playoffs, they goaded the other teams into taking a bunch of bad penalties and hence won the games and the series. Not a Panther fan but I don’t see why people keep thinking this is some Cinderella story. It’s a team coming off a 58 win season where they won the Presidents Trophy and lost in 2nd round to the then 2x defending champs (who went on to their 3rd straight Finals) They make a franchise defining move in the off season to address this exact time of year, and it’s worked. The only real take away is, a great team got off to a slow start after major off season move.

There's something that people tend to forget about the Montreal run of 2021, the team that showed up in the playoff isn't the team that played most of the season. A lot of players came back from injuries in the last week before the playoffs. That includes Carey Price, Shae Webber, Paul Byron, and Brendan Gallagher. Add those guys in the line-up, you have a completely different team. So by the standings they looked like absolute underdogs, but by roster, they weren't all that bad.

Extra points need to be given when a finals has teams with completely different looks and colour palettes

@@estellegrignon 100% agreed! ‘91 saw neither team wearing red or blue for example, but rather lesser used colours at the time. The Stars/Sabres final is another great matchup of classic jerseys. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any finals where both teams have completely different branding and palettes. The Stars/Sabres final is the closest I can think of though the Stars not totally deviating from the black and green look I guess… 🤷🏻‍♂️ Another angle could be which teams looked totally different in multiple cup finals appearances. I think the Panthers seeding is a bit misleading. After Maurice came in, I can imagine there were growing pains as the players had to adjust to a new coaching staff and different systems. They’re basically the same president’s trophy winning team as last years, if not better. Just took them a while to click, so they lost a lot of regular season games. Doesn’t look like that matters so much now though, does it?

An added caveat for the 2010 Flyers was that they didn't even qualify for the playoffs until the final day and they needed a shootout to do that so yes, they were a complete anomaly that year. I would put their run even more improbable than this year's Panthers only because of the shootout just to get in then falling behind 3-0 to Boston and 3-0 in game 7.

They were a #2 seed in the West and lost in the 1st round to the Kings, 4 games to 2. The Kings even went so far as to take Colorado to 7 games in round 2. Not a Cinderella run but still pretty exciting for the fans.

2010's eastern conference finals was a battle of cinderella teams for sure. I even remember to this day the comic strip they made for hockey games in the Journal de Montréal, in the preview of that series, it was simply Cniderella with the Habs logo on her dress, b!tchfighting the Sleeping Beauty with the Flyers logo on her dress, I remember laughing so hard at it xD Montreal (8th seed, defeated the President Trophy winners and the reigning SC champions) against Philadelphia (7th seed, reverse-sweeped a Boston powerhouse). I was so mad that Philly reverse-sweeped Boston that year, I soooo wanted the Habs to face the Bruins in the ECF. Oh well...

Honorable Mention should go to the New Jersey Devils in 1988. They never came close to the playoffs before then. They barely made it as the final seed in the division and upset the Islanders and Capitals before getting eliminated by Boston in seven games in the infamous Don Koharski Doughnut Series.

In 2012, New Jersey was the lower seed in all of the first 3 rounds. Even though they played Florida in the first round who finished 8 points behind them, the Panthers won their division to get the 3-seed while the Devils were the 6-seed. So both teams in the 2012 Finals were in a way Cinderella teams. I believe the Kings and Devils combined seed of 14 is the highest ever in a Cup Final. The 2012 playoffs were absolutely incredible, arguably the best in league history.

For the definition of "Cinderella run" not only would I consider starting on the road a part of it, but also the seed matchup. Upsetting a team maybe 5 seeds above would be a factor, like a #8 beating a #1, or a #7 beating a #2. Wouldn't hafta happen in every round, but certainly some kind of upset like that during the run would be part of a Cinderella run.
