The Carry On tradition continued on television with numerous sit coms such as Are You Being Served, Hi De Hi, It Aint Half Hot Mum and Allo Allo. All of these shows were mini Carry On's. And damn funny they were too.

Sadly, these gems can never be made again, not without being watered down so much for the current viewers that all you get is part of the title and "The End".

A dull rainy miserable bank holiday is suddenly brought to life by the appearance of Carry On's on the telly on ITV3 or 4. Snobs may sneer at them but as far as I'm concerned they can take their opinions and shove them up the Khyber! My favourite? Possibly "Sergeant". I wish I had a platoon sergeant like Grimshaw in my day. It's so gentle and without the double entendres and smutty innuendo of future Carry On's. I love them that much I spent two years amassing the autographs of the main cast, framing them together and mounting them on the front room wall. The wife's really impressed.........

Carry on Teacher was filmed at my dad's school in West Ealing, Drayton Green primary school. It was always good to see locations you new when you watched the films, even me with my nan when i was about 4 or 5 in the 60's walking West Ealing railway station going to the shops, brings back lovely memories. I used to visit Pinewood studios for work, there is a Carry on walk of fame in one of the buildings, with photos of the stars. At 61 now I still love them.😂

I'm an ancient American. On a whim I bought several Carry On Double Features on DVD. The first film that I watched in the series was "Carry On Follow That Camel" (1967), because it featured Phil Silvers in the cast. I need to expand my collection. While I own nearly 500 PAL standard DVD releases (England, Australia, and New Zealand, plus Spain, Italy, Norway, Germany, and Sweden) the Carry On films that I have were released in the U.S. by VCI as part of The Rank Collection. My total DVD, blu-Ray, and 4K UHD collection totals at least 6,000 releases. Over 1,700 LaserDiscs

Saw Phil on the Dick Cavett Show absolutely *raving* about how he loved working in Britain, how the audience as well as his co-stars really loved his performance and how he had such a great time making the film. That said, I'm a bit on the fence about the effect of bringing in big-name stars from outside the franchise, like Silvers, Juliet Mills in "Carry On Jack", and the new kids in "Carry On Columbus" (Alexei Sayle, Rick Mayall and Charles "Roger Rabbit" Fleischer). Even Frankie Howerd seems a little misplaced in his two outings.

Typical of the Carry On Movies to try and suggest a WOMAN would be a better gunslinger than a MAN!! And then SHE has to teach HIM how to shoot!???!! I grew up watching the Carry On films. Absolute British institution and a vibrant snapshot of societal changes in the mid 20th century. The Carry Ons were produced on minimal budget but some of the historic ones really pulled it off, managing to look well produced and authentic. I think the cast are what made them the success they were. It’d be nice to see a similar franchise take off today. The closest I can think that could pull it off would be the cast of Ghosts and Horrible Histories. I think they have a similar energy.

It is true that we could laugh at outselves and still have a sense of our heritage. 58-78 you say, but then later recall the 1992 Carry on Columbus, as though it was a tack on. Saucy, seaside post-card humour - on film !. Loved em all with Sid being my hero - RIP all the wonderful people involved with the 'Carry On' films .......... with the exception of.Gerald Thomas who treated them all appallingly !

Not forgetting the linked though completely seperate (and first) 1957 "Carry on Admiral" on which it is alleged the title for "Carry on Sergeant" and therefore the series was "... pilfered willy-nilly".

Great video. Just to satisfy my OCD brain for detail..... can anyone confirm the video's claim that Khyber's outdoor shots were Snowdonia? I had it in my mind that they were shot in Borrowdale in the Lake district.

In the Carry on England there is a good scene with a button and a big bust. Hilarious.

Many of the cast were household names well before the Carry Ons - Sid James, with Hancock, Kenneth Williams, Bernard Bresslaw, Hattie Jacques at least.

£80,000 in 1962 would have bought 15 posh houses. Today, 15 posh houses would cost a minimum of £8 million. That's about $12 million dollars, and, although not a huge amount for a movie, it's not chicken feed either. So, €80,000 doesn't sound a lot, but it was enough to retire on, in luxury, in 1962.

Loved the Carry On films until I saw a documentary detailing just how badly the actors were treated when making the films...can never watch them with the same lighthearted enthusiasm now...

I actually liked "Carry on Columbus". My favourites were Camping and Abroad. My least favourite was Emmanuel. I have all of them including the TV series and Christmas Specials. The only thing I've not seen is the stage shows. I also have a copy of the TV series, "Bless this House". I know it has nothing to do with the Carry On franchise but it's Sid James.

You should chase up an earlier series - 'George and the Dragon' - another Sid James show but much better than Bless This House. Time hasn't been kind to that one....
