A Little Bit of Everything!! // Draft Horse Farming & Logging

Today we are doing a little bit of everything!! We are farming & logging with the draft horses today. We wanted to introduce you to our friend Erika and tell you a little about her interesting life! Then we are logging and cultivating the corn field! We also finally finished fixing up our hay wagon!
Watch Erika braiding manes! ► • Watch a Professional H...

Thank you for reminding me about the awesome tail braiding lady! This is one thing I didn't really learn well as a young'un; braiding wasn't really common with cow ponies, which predominated in the horse community way back then and there. That Argentinian tail knot is ingenious! Love it! Her horses were a real dream team, too. Your finished haywagon looks so professional; it should serve you well for quite a good many more years now. Fingers crossed for good hay weather now!

Baron is (as always) movie star handsome and lovely to watch in action with Chill(not really) Bill, who I think might be your coolest (though spicy) overall horse (while Ken appears to be actually the master of chill) - Thank you, always, for sharing these videos! Although I'm sure she has her share of problems the rewards must be very appealing. I enjoyed seeing how Jim was completing the hay wagon rebuild and it looks very sturdy. If those mares come into season. Baron might become so polite that he would bust out of his stall and run over and breed that mare .Oh well does that mean Erika gets a free ( no stud fee) Jim . Not everyone wants to handle stallions .So if Jim does and can that's great for all the mare owners and Jim gets stud fees . I am guessing but $500 sounds reasonable to me for stud fees . My 2 uncles had stallions . One a standard bred for harness racing and the other 5 for P M U farm . I was always told stay away from the stallions a I did .

Back in the day around here a lot of smaller farmers used those crossbred chunks for the dual purpose, big enough to do farmwork or skid logs, and light enough to hitch to the wagon, sleigh or democrat to run into town, or to the mill, or church etc and keep up a trot. I see the old harnesses and they are way too small for my Percherons, more for a 1200-14-- lb horse., even the old wagons had little short tongues and narrow eveners, all flimsy, etc. Weather here has been terrible for hay! still have 50 acres to go and no good weather in sight :( Did get 7 acres of oatlage cut, baled, wrapped for the neighbour last week. The oats were over 3 ft tall and got 49 4x4 hard core bales off the 7 acres. I wish there were some draft horse events and get togethers, not showsm up here in Ontario. I have almost no interest in hitch classes and big flashy hitch horses.

The cornfield looks good meanwhile, from the drone view. I'm not sure if it is weed in the rows or if further corn grew where the empty spots were. At least from the drone it now looks like all rows are completely full with corn plants, which would be great. In my cornfield I have a big spot with thistle, which I cut the heads with a sickle. With the weed I'm not concerned for the harvest too much but that it spreads out its seed, especially the thistle. So cutting their heads while they bloom should work fine. Have a very nice evening to you and Erika! -Chris

I keep wondering what the horses are thinking about. . .I keep thinking Jim should brief them on what they are going to be doing before they leave the barn. . .I keep thinking how confusing it must be for them [to have to] listen to Jim babble-on for the video incase he has something important for them to know like "Geeh". . . "Haah". . ."Whoa". . ."backup". . . "step-over". Love what you and your family are doing.. Signed: TD.(Marilee Too)

Do you transplant or do you let nature take its course? How long does it take to get the start of an ecosystem that attracts all sorts of beneficials? Nice music during that interlude/drive in to pick up another log ! A welcome dynamic to a good video - good camera work Brenda!

If I could give some polite input? I don’t think music is needed in these videos. I prefer the sounds of nature, the jingling of the harnesses, Jim giving commands, and the sound of the horses working. I live in a city and the sounds of you farm is a great escape. Sometimes I listen to your videos instead of watching them. Love your channel. Can I also make a request to see Bree at the end of every video? Even if it’s just for a moment.

Jim, I had an tree surgeon tell me when you cut a tree down, cut an 'X' across the stump about one inch deep with your chainsaw. This will keep the stump from sprouting again and the stump will rot twice as fast. Have you heard of this and have you tried it?

Greetings from Manhattan, KS. Brenda, you really do an awesome job at filming and editing these videos. Bravo. As I always do, I enjoy watching Jim and you handling the horses. I wish I could be there with you, learning and participating in farming with horses. That has been my dream for several years, but never got the opportunity. Life took a hold of me and sent me in other directions. Any chance that you could/would be my mentor and help me to live my dream? Erika, you have a very unique talent, and you have beautiful horses. Jim, fantastic job on the Hay wagon. It looks very solid and would last for many years to come. Hope and pray that you have a safe and joyful 4th of July. My wife, Linda and I have been invited to a celebration at her church, tomorrow. They're going to have a flag raising ceremony and a breakfast I'll be wearing my Navy Whites. Linda's dream, is to raise rabbits for meat. Has anyone there in the family ever thought about doing something like that? Happy 4th, to the Gordon family. I look forward to reading any comments for you.🎆🎇

Only one mane but hair does fall down both sides of the neck . No roached manes for Erika after all she braids them for income on other people's horses and can use her horses as demonstration .

Yes Jenni’s mane is unruly, I’ve given up trying to tame it. When I have my own barn I’ll roach my working horses too, I leave forelocks long.
