A lathe technique that not everyone knows!? How to split & drill 3 holes on PCD

Ғылым және технология

This technique of dividing 3 holes with a lathe is a technique that is rarely known, this technique does not require a dividing head and also does not require a rotary table, of course it does not require many tools.

    Using a digital spirit level is an interesting idea. I think a 1:8 reduction gearbox, which larger lathes are usually equipped with, could be conveniently used here. This gear is usually designed so that the gear has a number of teeth divisible by 3 and 4, just so it can be used as a simple dividing device. You simply switch the lever from the intermediate position to the 1:8 position and roughly rotate the chuck by hand. With 1:8 gearing, the motor won't usually turn that easily, and for this purpose it might be enough.

    The title doesn't describe the project. It appears to be a chuck back plate. If that's a bearing that I saw you install on the press I'm guessing this chuck is going on the tail-stock? Wakodahatchee Chris

    how do you centre things with four independendt teeth ?

  • @robertlawson8572

    @robertlawson8572

    14 күн бұрын

    Jaws, not teeth! Centring a workpiece in a four jaw is a 90 second operation after the first one of a batch, and... a four jaw holds tighter than a three jaw... I've roughed 1.5" off a diameter of a steel billet using a HSS knife and face tool, at low speed, requiring high torque, which I doubt the machine's three jaw could have transmitted... 7.5HP machine... Anyway, centring in a four jaw... The chuck face has reference grooves in it. They're cleverly arranged so you can compare the independent jaws "corners" to the grooves, interpolate the position of the jaws between grooves. So, you adjust the jaws 1,3, and 2,4 so the workpiece centres roughly, but reasonably well, by eye, then...Either use a DTI to check the workpiece centres on axes 1,3, and 2,4, or... spin the chuck reasonably slowly, and, holding a piece of chalk (blackboard or French) in your hand, approach the workpiece with the chalk, until it touches the periphery of the workpiece. It'll leave a witness mark in one spot if the workpiece is running out a great distance, and you do it right... (with bright stock, you have no excuse for being far out...) Anyway, if the mark's at jaw one, relax the tightening screw at jaw three, add pressure at jaw 1, retighten jaw one, repeat the chalk thing. if you're lucky, the chalk mark will be at both jaw 1 and 3, or if not, there'll be a wider mark on jaw 1 side... Then deal with 2, 4 Continue until approaching the billet with chalk, the periphery is marked continuously... If you're turning cast stock, it may not be round, nor will "black bar" then, it's down to experience and judgement... Once you've centred your first component, when you unload it, loosen jaws 1 and 2, remove finished component, mount next, tighten 1 and 2, you'll not be far out, check, adjust, turn. 90 seconds for a component you can mount by hand. Big stuff, handled by hoist or crane... A but longer... I was taught not to hold black bar in a three jaw chuck, and never did... But... Not everyone was taught that... In my last job, I ground my three jaw's chuck jaws in situ far more often than I had previously in my entire working life... "Use the four jaw for turning black bar, you arse!" didn't have the desired effect with fitters... You can regrind four jaw independent chuck jaws more easily than those from a three jaw self centring chuck... (or a four or six jaw self centring chuck) I used to leave a four jaw mounted on my "best" lathe at the end of the day, to deter fitters from using it overnight. They thought they could turn... Most, if not all, were wrong...
