A late winter walk around my UK exotic garden, plus plans for 2024!

With the first sun in weeks, I take the opportunity to get out in the garden to assess the garden at this stage in late winter. Plus, my plans for 2024.

Arid bed looks class. The washy particularly looks in superb nick given the winter. The shelter has done brilliantly well👍

Thanks mate! Yeah I'm pleased with the washy, it's held up very well. I still think long term I'll replace it with either an agave montana or ovatifolia though 😄

3 ferns for your consideration: Big - Polystichum Setiferum 'Herrenhausen) Medium - Dryopteris Erythrosora (Autumn Fern) Small - Asplenium Scolopendrium (harts tongue fern) All hardy and easy to get..

I have purchased 3 bags of grit, 500 litres soil and 500 mulch. My garden is really boggy, but the plan is to just turn the dampest spots into raised beds. You have a top quality garden.

Thank you 🙏 You've got the right plan improving your soil. I was lucky with mine as the garden already had decent loam further away from the house, I just mulched every spring to improve that way.

I really like Holly ferns (Cyrtomium falcatum) because they're evergreen and look kind of like cycads. Tassel ferns (Polystichum polyblepharum) are evergreen as well and very easy..

I was just admiring the rocks and then you said you wanted to get rid of them XD. yeah, it's all personal taste. I do think that rocks like that in a wall do look good, but I can see that in your case, the ivy is annoying and it looks best when it looks natural, like it makes sense to be there, and you've got a flat garden - so railways sleepers will look better.

😂 yeah I just think they look messy and sleepers will sharpen up the lines - I'm a fan of sharp lines in the garden. I'll reuse the rocks though,no want to turn my front lawn into a Beth Chatto inspired drought resistant gravel and rock garden.

@@greatnorthernexotic Yeah, that should look good! As i said, i do love that kind of rock wall, but it was a bit randomly placed in the middle of your garden and didn't particularly look like it 'belonged'. I want to do some water feature in my garden, and rocks would be nice, but a japanese-inspired fountain might be more in-keeping...

Currently adding bags of grit to my sunny border to transform to the arid bed Did you use fabric control under the stones? Doesn't look like you did when you pulled back im in two minds whether to bother. I've got a small Butia as the centre piece Couple of different types of hardy yucca Cham cerifera and vulcano Small olive for the back corner Couple of Euphorbias, opuntia humifusa and macrocentra (macro been out completely unprotected all winter and looks like it's going to sail through) has nice blueish pads Aloe aristata, semoervivums and sedums as ground cover Got a daisylirion to put in too I need to stop buying stuff for it now because I fear I'm going to lose the arid look putting too much in 😂

No fabric in mine, because I feel at some point I'll throw in some seeds like California poppy (inspired by East Ruston Old Vicarage) but also the gravel is so loose that it's easy to pull out the weeds. Chamaerops cerofera is high on my list - love the colouring. Weirdly Opuntia humifusa, despite being the hardest in the genus, hasn't done well for me. It rotted early on in December in the ground, I tried to rescue pads for the greenhouse and most of them have rotted too.
