Once I repaired my loose shift linkage, after 27k miles, I am able to find neutral without any issues. I did have a little trouble before, but just rocked the bike.

I have 4200 miles on my 2023 390 ADV and really have few complaints. Buffeting when following or passing semi’s can be uncomfortable and I can almost NEVER find neutral! My likes would be the brakes are the best of any bike I have owned, saved my life a few weeks ago when a mini van made a left hand turn directly in front of me. Stopped with a couple feet to spare! Most of my miles have been pavement and gravel roads but I like having the ability to go off-road if I should choose! Fun bike with great gas mileage!

I have a new 2023 KTM 390 Adventure SW, and finding your channel is the best thing possible as I learn it. Thank you, Matt! I'll add that my previous cycle was a classic, 1982 Suzuki GS650G, which I loved. But with the light weight, the more comfortable size, technology (EFI, ABS, TC, Mode & fabulous TFT), dual use potential, etc., just makes the KTM incredibly more enjoyable and safer for me.

Couldn't agree more on the 'small bike is more' attitude. Much the same experience for me, ridden the big GS's, Tenere, etc., etc. Its just more fun on smaller and simpler machines, for me at least.

Small is fun for lots of us!

My 390, when brand new, would stall coming to a stop and occasionally while taking off from a stop. That self-corrected within the first couple hundred miles and never returned. I also had a warning pop up saying the quick shifter was malfunctioning even though I had it disabled. I just turned off the bike and back on and it's never returned. I agree with all your assessments. The bike is a blast to ride on and off road. Just this past weekend I was off road and while climbing a very steep hill it became horrendously rocky with loose round rocks. If I would not have had traction control turned off I would have stalled and the bike would tumbled down the hill - it was that steep. But, I mention this as it did crest the hill but just barely. I used every skill as a dirt biker I had but it will do it. The bike just keeps surprising me every time I take it out. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together. Nice to know your thoughts and experience with the bike as that should help others thinking of purchasing one - IF you can find one.

Completely different bike my my versys 650 stalled when I got it in the same manner. My buddy whose a certified tech who did the school in Florida said put regular instead of super in it. Ran like a dream after using regular fuel.

Thanks Matt great review. I'd already decided to get one of these but your description makes me even happier about the decision. As I've gotten older (75) and weaker, just being lighter makes it more attractive to me. Plus I like the fuel consumption figures, my DR650 guzzles around 6 litres per 100 km. Yeah I think I'll get the comfort seat right away, don't like a hard seat. And an AM windscreen. Thanks again.

I still have my R1200GS but it has really became a backup bike since getting the 390 Adv. Sad to have that bike sit so much but the 390 Adv is much more fun and manageable. Thanks for watching.

@@advmatt yes I find myself more willing to rid the dirt roads and jeep trails with this bike. It works well all around. Rode from home to 3n14 to 3n12 to 3n16 then back home just for fun, and it was fun. I think it was a 5 hour tour. Enjoy!

On the stalling problem: I just watched an Aussie review that had the stalling problem really bad (almost every gear shift, with less than 1000km on the bike). The problem turned out to be as faulty clutch switch (right next to the pivot of your clutch lever). They got that fixed on warranty and haven't had a problem since (almost 10,000km).

This is (by far) the most comprehensive review. I'm looking for a beginners bike, even though all of my previous bikes were much bigger and heavier, but it has been many years and this time I want to come back on the bike that is able to go on a trail, and maybe bit more. Most important is the ability to be able to keep with highway speeds when needed. Thank you Matt for all thousands of miles of hard work to finally bring us (what others call) honest review; you made it real. Thanks, and I hope to see/meet you at SoCal's trails.

I'd love to do the type of stuff you do on your bike, but my fiancée and I are attached at the hip (we even work together full time every day lol) so there's no way I could go on these crazy adventures without her, and she has no interest in motorcycles at all. I'll have to settle for some local day trips to fire roads and trails, but that'll be good enough for me lol.

Really good summary. I’ve got just over 1,000 miles on mine and I agree with just about everything you’ve pointed out. One mod I made on mine was to go down a tooth on the front sprocket. This shortened up the shift intervals but to be honest, I didn’t notice a huge advantage off road to give up a more comfortable cruising RPM on road. I have a 3,500 mile trip coming up in August to ride the full Colorado and parts of the Utah BDR’s and will put the 15 tooth back on for those trips. Good video’s, Matt. I feel like you bring a dependable “every man” or average ADV rider’s perspective to your topics. Keep it going!

Great review Matt. Looking to get a small capacity Adv bike for my brother and this fits the bill perfectly. Thanks.

Just did about 1,500 km this past weekend. Lots of hwy and maybe 400 of it was logging roads. Overall, I enjoyed the trip, you're bang on for the wind affecting the ride. We hit a wicked head wind and I felt the bike working harder but was still getting roughly 375 km out of the tank. The sweet spot I found for this motor is around 90 kph, it can easily push 100 kph, but I watch my fuel consumption go up considerably. I was still keeping up with traffic with an extra 70lbs attached to the rear. What I've done to my bike, pivot pegs, 790 Windscreen, barkbusters, Aluminium skid plate, Adv Tribe Toe guard, Adv Tribe radiator guard, Adv Tribe GPS bracket, pannier racks, Adv Tribe Risers, Heated grips, phone mount, upgraded tail rack, K60 Scout tires. I've been watching your vids for a while, keep it up. :)

Thanx for the review. I am a 50 years old total beginner and thinking to buy my first bike (I am 1,83 cm high with 105 kg). The cb500x is on the top of my list but also the ktm 390 adventure and the CFmoto MT650.... Difficult to choose, want to have a practical bike for commuting but also go on some touring in my country with enough power and not 'difficult' for a beginner as me. Great review. I was torn last year when I was looking for a small bike. Considered the 390, but I ride mostly street, with some gravel thrown in. So picked up a used 2018 CB500X.

I briefly looked at the CB500X too. It's a great bike. You can always put the rally raid kit on it down the road if you start doing more offroad riding.

Great video Matt. I am just about to order the tail rack, pannier rack and bar riser from Zana after your recommendation, the price is insane compared to Aussie prices! Glad the long-haul road trip went well, very reassuring for me. I was considering getting the 690 in a year or so, but I think al sit tight and enjoy this little pocket rocket for a few years!

ADV Matt, your videos are very informative. I got the same windscreen after seeing one of your videos and it does make a huge difference. I'm probably going with the bar risers next. I noticed that I'm leaning a lot on my wrists while cruising on the highway and its a lingering feeling in the wrists. I'm hoping with the bars up a little higher I'll sit more upright and more weight will be down instead of forward.

I only have a few hundred miles on my Adventure 390 I picked up off a younger guy that dumped it. Sure it's scraped up but still looks great and runs awesome. I love it, so much more than my 1100 Shadow. Going to add on some storage this summer.

You did a good job showing that the bike is not a limitation to going exploring. I already have a 1kw ebike for a trailbike, though would love something that doesn't require transporting there by truck.

No doubt it is, but I admit I'm a little intimidated from people reporting issues. According to the internet, these have the stalling problem from at least 6 different causes, but only when you buy it for your gf. If you buy it for yourself, you get 1 cause max.@@advmatt

Very good info. I am thinking of going to a smaller bike myself. I currently have a Super Tenere which I love, but I don't like riding it on dirt roads too much anymore especially when I am by myself. You know how some of the dirt roads can get out here in NM, always end up in some challenging terrain. I was just concerned with the hwy riding, but I think this mike would be just fine, especially for short 150 mile day rides from my home. Know to try and find one.

Great review. I’ve got about 6500 miles on mine and I agree on most of your points. I think you’re mistaken with the quick shift though. You do not need to blip or even lift off the throttle. It actually says there is no need to in the owners manual. Also, my quick shifter got clunkier as my chain degraded. Replacing my stock chain with a DID made a huge difference. It actually shifts a lot smoother than when the bike was brand new. Replacing the chain even seemed to help with the issues mentioned, I no longer stall approaching stoplights or get false neutrals anymore. I think the stock chain is a weak spot on the bike. I recommend replacing sooner than later.

I tried shifting without blipping the throttle and I can't get it shift. I just changed out the drive-train and it is the same thing. I don't know. I do agree the chain KTM used was low quality, but it was likely to help keep the price down.

Thank you for this very complete report. The question I have is about reliability in the long term. It is not at all a question of criticizing KTM because the brand is sometimes badly treated. I'm interested in the feedback from users who have done a good mileage. Because I'm looking forward to this 390.

There are some dukes around with 80 tsd km.. Same engine with no issues and still in best condition without burning oil

Thank you Matt! A very comprehensive review and you covered everything I am looking for. I am planning to switch from Interceptor 650 to ADV 390 as I find Interceptor isn't suitable for touring more than 400 kms. The lack of traction control and other electronics is becoming a limitation when I want to push my limit in a safe manner. One thing I wanted to know was - how big is your handlebar riser and did u have to change your clutch cable to accommodate the riser?

Hey Matt. My daughter and I just completed the Mid Atlantic BDR last week. When all was said and done we rode about 2000 miles with the return being all slab and 100 of that being one of the busiest interstates on the east coast. The BDR part consisted of a majority of dirt with an amazing array of backcountry twisty tarmac. I did change out the stock tires for the Motoz Rallz and was glad I did. I had no problem with the TCK 70s on dry dirt roads but wet not so much. We did encounter a few days of rain so I was happy with the choice. I have to say I am in 100% agreement with everything you said. I also own a KTM 690 Enduro R And I did notice a difference especially when it became rougher. I attribute that mostly to the tire sizes. There's a reason why they but 21/18" wheels on off road bikes. Having said that the 390 handled the rough stuff just fine albeit a bit slower and with more prudent line selection. Although I'm glad I have both bikes I can't heap enough praise on the 390. It does have it's limitations which you touched upon but when it's all said and done that 390 gives me more smiles to the miles than any bike I've owned. It's just such an all around fun bike to ride. Thanks for another great video.

Hi Michael, I was also considering the 2019 KTM 690, but the price differential is quite steep. I am going to accessorize my 390 with all the good stuff Mat has mentioned in some of his previous vids. I bought the bike 2nd hand from a dealer in Brisbane Australia, less than half the price of the 690!

@@owenregan1 hey if you plan on doing that go check out carpimoto for side racks if you want the Givi brand. With the mark down that they did and the conversion rate off of their price in Euro I ended up spending like maybe 200 bucks on the side racks and the top rack shipped and I also found the Givi canyon bags on there for about 467 shipped which is better than any price you're going to find stateside not to mention a lot of places are out of stock and I can confirm that the plate for the bags mounts up directly to the side racks even with the mono key attachments. The rack is also attached in more places and it's rated to hold I think 20 lb each side

Single Rotor but with 4 piston radially mounted callipers actually...not two pistons. that's why the front brakes are phenominal.

Excellent review Matt! I’ve been riding a bmw f 750gs and although I like it on roads I want to spend my time doing bdr’s and exploring. Like your comments, I don’t feel like navigating difficult terrain with 500lb bike & gear. I’m switching the the 390 adv!

I rode am F700GS for a few years and found it to be a beast. You wont look back with the 390 Adv. It is so much fun to ride and modify to suit your needs.

It's normal for high revving single cylinder. It is significantly smoother than older single cylinder bikes. If it bothers you try adding grip puppies. It's an oversized foam grip. Some riders like them.

I do agree with my assessment. I just turned 27k miles on this bike and absolutely love riding it. It is so much fun.

It's worth taking out the sidestand bolts and putting some fresh threadlock in there, it has been known for bolts to go missing. I had that problem also. Vibey single engine.

I now have over 10,000 on my KTM 390 Adventure and with GIVI Trekker 33/46 hard bags I get over 400 KM (250 Miles per tank of gas ) did do 430 km and still had some gas in the tank, I am running Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires and use high test. As for getting tired with the wind hitting you, use your gut muscles to hold you up not your arms, My DR650 has no wind protection and I can ride all day and not be a bit tired at the end of the day even going in to very strong winds. Have the screen on the KTM set to the low setting and have no problems. I always ride with my arms relaxed never use them to hold me up. I know all the specs on the bike and easy to know what is on the bike was hopping for more details of how it handles at speeds and on corners, I find mine great on every thing so far but like others opinions, as a lot of people ask me what they should get, and if the bike would suit them. But most of my riding is on the back roads at 80 Km per hour and on dirt and gravel roads, where I feel what this bike is made fore as well as off road. But because of ground clearance gnarly off road I use my DR650 and hopping to be using a Honda CRF300 L soon and keep the KTM as a ADV bike and sticking to mostly roads, Paved, Gravel, and Dirt. some of witch are in pretty bad shape, huge pot holes and deep ruts. And love to have 3 in the stable, for when my sun comes down he will be able to do some dirt and gravel roads with me. He is riding my old Suzuki Boulevard C50T not the greatest for hitting large pot holes. Thanks for the video but would like one on more of your riding experience, than what is on the bike, that I can see, or look up, The only thing I would like to change on this bike is a 18 liter gas tank, that would give a very good range of over 550 Km per tank ( 340 miles.)

So true about the tyres (tires) . IMHO, there is no tyre in the world which can perform amazingly well both on and off-road

There is no perfect tire. They are all a compromise if you ride on and off road.

Matt Ask your KTM dealer to do the software update it should correct the stalling issues My dealer did mine when I purchased in March and I've had no issues at all

The stalling issued started on my 390 at about 3300 miles and continued till I did a full service with a valve adjustment at 9300 miles .. the valves where way out of adjustment .. I ordered a shim kit and adjusted the valves and the issue went away and never had that stalling again .. over 20k later and still running perfect . But be ready checking and adjusting the valves is difficult and time consuming and that was the reason I did it myself as a tech trying to make money at the dealer may not take as much time to get the adjustment just right ...

Thanks for letting me know about this. My bike is due for the first valve check. It really looks like a huge pain in the butt to get everything disassembled. The first time might go to the shop to save some of my own time.

If the stalling happens when you pull the clutch in, its because of the sensor under the lever. I fixed this by making the sensor rod a bit thicker with heat shrinking tube.

Black Dog Cycle Works skid plate. I did a video on it about two years ago.

I got mine 1 week ago from a dealer with 16.000 km. It's suffering the stalling issue when coming to a stop with the clutch lever caught. I went to KTM to ask for information and they told me to change the spark plugs. In a telegram group people told me about software updates and the sensor. It's like there are a lot of solutions and nobody knows which one is the correct one in my case Thanks for the video, keep it up!

Very good review i would have to agree with about about everything you said. I think tires are good until you come across mud. Like you said easy thing to change. The accesories port seems like you have to have special adapters?

I just used spade lugs for the accessory plugs. Common electrical connectors worked fine for me.

Great video thank you, I love the way the wind hits me on this bike with the standard windshield, Do not use your arms to hold you up use only your gut mussels and you can take a lot of wind for a very long day ride, I went with the Dunlop TrailMazx Mission tires and love them, They are a true 50/50 tire, very good on the road and very good off road, I am getting 400 + Km per tank of gas which is around 250 miles. Taking it easy getting 3.3 liters per hundred, pushing hard 3.9 liters per hundred, averaging most rides 3.5 liters per hundred. the only thing this bike is lacking is a center stand for easy chain maintenance.

I dont have your core strength, I need the wind screen. I used the Trailmax Mission on my big bike. It's a decent tire, with a really long life. I didnt like the front tire very well, it would wash on gravel roads unexpectedly. I am going to try those next year on the 390 and see how they go. Your gas mileage is way better than mine. I need to track it a bit better. It's a great bike, I love to hear from riders like yourself enjoying the bike. Cheers.

@@advmatt Your core strength builds as you ride, just do not use your arms to hold you up and it dose not take long, Have a few friends, and this helped them a lot. One lady who was getting tired after 1 hour, holding with her arms, now keeps her arms relaxed and can ride all day, with no wind protection. it works. Your core mussels are some of the largest in your body put them to use. Also very good for your back to have strong gut mussels, this you will find very helpful as you get older,

@@hiltonmcconnell2563 I try to keep my arms relaxed whenever I am riding pavement. Offroad is a different story, depending on terrain, but still try to keep most of my weight off of my arms, as you described. Great tip on riding position. It is rarely discussed.

The oil from the crankcase ventilation should be normal in most engines, bike and car. As long as it isn't excessive then it's going to happen.

Thanks, the first time I noticed it, there was a bit more than I expected. Since then it has only been a small amount.

Great review, well presented! My KTM is as good as my Himalayan off road and it's faster and lighter. I hope I haven't asked this of you before but, I see you have a _Black Dog Cycle Works skid plate._ Do you notice it's great weight? Is it completely attached to the frame and not the engine? How do you feel about thick plastic skid plates? Thanks, S

I did a video on this skid plate that should answer all your questions and more. This is the only skid plate you should use if you ride offroad. Only attaches to the frame.

I tried purchasing Zana stuff on their site with a credit card, got rejected by the automated system. The next day I recieved a PayPal invoice. I am not sure what else you can do. Thanks for the nice comments. This really a fun bike.

Did you have the valves adjusted?

It'l be very interesting what KTM is coming up next - those spyshots of the new 390 Adventure R look promissing. While it's nice in some occasions (like overtaking those semi trucks) do I really NEED >100 horses? Maybe I'll downgrade from ny Norden 901 to that new 390, which we can expect maybe later this year. 21/ 18 (or is it 17?) is what I want, sufficient fuel range is good to have (300+ km) and low weight is soooo nice!

Just wait for 30 seconds after the initial fuel pump click after turning the key on for another click. Should stop stalling taking off.

Nice review! Where is it made? Is it easy to maintain (valve checks,etc)? Do you miss spoke wheels? Is the stator output enough for heated gear plus accessories?

It's made in India, so far it has ran my heated gear. I dont have other accessories. I now have spiked wheels, but the cast held up fairly well. So far it has been easy to maintain, and inexpensive. I havent done the valve clearance check myself. The cost to take it in was worth the time for me.

Cool! Its nice to hear you're having a bunch of fun on the 390. I was gonna ask you about 91 Octane in Baja. I looked a couple times and couldn't find it. I just did low octane most of the time, but you said you found 91 half the time?

The bigger cities like La Paz and San Felipe had 91. I didnt really worry too much about it.

@@advmatt All my bikes require 91 but ive never had a problem running 87 from time to time with any of my bikes. It was something I just never worried about myself. That 390 is awesome, I hear lots of people loving them! Thanks brother

The gearchange couldn't be better on my 390 Duke. I like wind on my chest, but I don't do big distances. ThaiIand is humid a lot of the year, so the wind cools you down. Another good, informative video.

Thanks Matt for all the great vids! I have a 390 and wanted to get your opinion on the Quick Shifter. I don't currently have it on my 390 and have heard some really like it and others say its not really worth getting. So.....what do you think, would you get it again or would you keep the $300 for something else??? Thanks

My bike came with it, but I would skip it and use the money for a new seat or skid plate or new footpegs.

I’m a big fan of the quick shifter after 6500 miles. It’s great for panic situations in traffic or coming into a corner to hot. It’s also really nice to use after long trips to give the hands some rest. I thought it worked good when new but it works great after installing a stronger chain. I left a more detailed comment about the chain and quick shifter on the video.

@@maxthielen3409 I will take a look. My BMW R1200GS has a quick shifter, it works much better. On my F800GS I could shift without the clutch just as well as with the quick shifter on the 390 Adv.

I have the Zana pannier racks and strapped them to the racks. I had to install an exhaust shield, the bags slightly touch the shield but it has worked fine so far.

Great video. The bench seat is comfortable. I rode 450 miles to go Motocamping and then rode back the next day when rained out. I could not imagine that long a ride in the stock seat.

Hey Matt how are the rims holding up??? Do you think someone looking at a 50/50 split on and off road should expect spoke rims will be required soon after getting the bike? Really appreciate your content on this bike!

The cast wheels are holding up for me so far. I dont air down, ever, to protect the wheels, no matter the offroad terrain. I have ridden in some pretty rough stuff and hit obstacles pretty hard. Unless you are planning really extreme offroad riding these wheels work. If you are planning extreme offroad riding this might not be the right bike.

@@advmatt Thanks Matt. Not looking to ride dry rocky river beds or anything, just some times you run into washouts or sections that get rocky even on fire roads. The DBT channel has done a couple really good reviews on the 390 and they changed their rims to spoke. Wondered how you, an actual owner of the bike, were doing with your rims. @@johnscott9829 there is value in spoked wheels but the guys at DBT ride their bikes really hard. Ride the bike within it's limits and you can get through pretty gnarly stuff, just not at speed. I will eventually get spoked wheels and put a tubeless kit on them. Then I will be set.

In India, for stalling problem people change front chain sprocket. Install Duke 250 front chain sprocket.

I had the valves serviced and new shims installed. This seemed to solve the stalling problem for me. I have seen others say the same thing as well.

Valve adjustment on the 390 engine needs to be done also, or you get those stalls.

The gas mileage thinking of it i did about 1.5hour on highway about 3.5 on backroads with about 40 pounds of gear and at 120 miles i think i was down to 2 bars.

Think the bars are way off, as at 250 Km my light was flashing and warning low fuel went another 50 Km for a total of 300 Km and could only get 10.8 liters in and there was no way to fit any more in the tank. So 14.5 - 10.8 = 3.7 liters still in tank so another 100 km. to go. The read out did say that I had another 99 Km to go, so that is pretty close. Going to ask if they can change it not to start flashing until 300Km 250 is way to early.

I have some inconsistent readings as well but not quite as much as you. The fuel consumption calculations seem to be pretty accurate so I use that if I am not sure how far I can go. Thanks for commenting.

Is it possible to fit the quick shifter+ after you buy the bike?

The quickshift+ is already in the bike's software from the factory. You just have to pay the dealership to unlock it. Most people report paying around $300 for the unlock. Personally have not bothered to unlock mine yet.

I am 5' 10", with some new handle bars, bar risers and new lower footpegs you can get the bike to fit you really well. As for weight, I weigh around 215, before gear. The suspension can handle it. I have videos for all these things as guide as to what it will take. I think this bike is more comfortable than my GS was.

Not the most exciting question, but what kind of thermometer did you get and where did you get it? I can't believe that with all the electronics on this bike there isn't an in-console thermometer.

What are your bags? I see a lot! What and where are they and how are they installed?

The bags were Givi GRT709 Canyon bags. They have a mounting plate that attaches to the pannier rack for quick removal.

got no overheats issue yet on this bike? does it have a temperature readings?

I have not experienced any overheating to include rising on 108 degree temperatures. I have seen the temperature gauge go up one bar sitting in heavy traffic on a really hot day, but that is all I have seen. The bike doesnt have temperature read out, just a gauge with eight bars.

Sold it as soon as possible. It did not feel good to me. Honestly it was my worst bike ever and it is really for very short dudes or girls. Not higher then 1.60 meter. Otherwise it is not a good idea to stand on the pegs. You can't steer with your knees because there is nothing between your knees. Just air. And therefore while riding offroad it wants you quicly to throw you over the front of the bike. All the force comes down at your arms. I don't know how you guys experience this ? I know i am large. Almost 2 meters. On my 1190R i have a 3 cm bar riser and 3 cm lowering the pegs. And i can do riding while standing perfectly. There was no way i could do that on the 390. Now my next light bike will be the CRF 300 L or Rally. Not quite sure between the two. For sure it needs a spring change. Ktm is much better on the springs. The 390 has to evolve a bit. A bit higher. A bit lower footpegs and standard spoked wheels. And let it be a 1000.00 euro more expensive from stock because of that. It would be worth it.

I understand where you are coming from. Really tall riders will find this bike uncomfortable. I put bar risers on mine and installed lower footpegs. That helped a lot. This bike needs some refinement for sure. Thanks for commenting.

I dont ride at night, but in low light situations it seems adequate. As for a day time running light it is visible.
