A knitting episode (14): Cables & texture | 1 FO, 4 WIP's & a visit to Loop of London

Hello everyone, and welcome to knitting episode 14, in which I babble on about all the cables that are currently passing (and have recently passed) through my hands. I forgot to ask you how you feel about cables - do you love them, hate them, try to avoid them, feel indifferent about them?
Thank you for showing up here and patiently allowing me to chat about knitting. It is appreciated. All the best, Helle
I hope I have linked to most things I talk about in the video that can (or should) be linked to:
If you want to connect with me, you can find me here on Instagram:
@helles.knitting.journal
and on Ravelry, my user name is my last name, Libenholt (which I thought was a good idea at the time, who knows why).
The Nordic Knitalong on Ravelry can be found here: www.ravelry.com/groups/nordic... - and on Instagram it's the hashtag: #nordicknitalong
The projects I talk about (I've mostly linked to the designers' homepages unless they're only on Ravelry, in which case you can easily find them there):

Thank you for the little lesson in not judging all that we see and experience. And instead come with an open & neutral mind with no expectations. We can never fully experience a thing if we have a preconceived notion of what that something is. Instead, we can just trust and allow things to be revealed in their own way. ❤

I listen to you today (2/14/2024- Happy Valiant Human Day! - my renaming of Valentines' Day) while I do the hand finishing on a luxurious cashmere coat I am altering for a customer. I loved hearing the Rumi poem. Thank you, It is one of my favorites. I keep it on the inside of my front door. Here is another of my favorite quotes that I have returned to again and again to to help me cultivate neutrality, and freely Loving myself and Other. It is by William Blake; - " He who bends to himself a Joy, does the winged Life destroy, but he who kisses the Joy as it flies, lives in Eternity's sunrise. "

Oh, cables….. love….hate… I’ve made one sweater with cables for my husband. It is a cardigan with full zipper and the cables ran on each side of the zipper. It was his Christmas gift last year which he finally got just before Easter. I think I will stick to hats, mitts, etc for a while. 😉

Hi Helle! I’m back with my usual wall of text, but there’s just so much I want to respond to. 😂 I did exactly the same thing with vests. I would see them in my Ravelry travels and think “Nice, but not for me”, until I ran across the Dige Vest (made with Woolfolk Fleck) and fell in love. I made one, and it has become one of my very favorite pieces, so now I never discount any category completely. Lesson learned. 😏 Re: Stubbornness and so forth - YES. My daughter is Autistic, and one of the things we work on is flexibility. If you can’t have exactly the thing you want, there’s a lot to be said for making do with what you can have, or “going with the flow” so to speak. It makes for a much more peaceful and enjoyable life if you’re not walking around miserable all the time, and you can open yourself to new things and experiences. I try to not judge anything or anyone until I have a lot of information, and even then - life is complicated, and I don’t necessarily believe anything is “good” or “bad”. There’s a lot more to it than that. Re: steeking - I know nothing about the subject, I'm afraid, so can't offer advice, but I look forward to seeing where you take it! I found out after knitting my Nordic knitalong project that I can't wear baby alpaca, even with a long sleeved shirt underneath it. Sooooo, I completely relate to your sensitive skin issues - I am quite the delicate flower myself. 🤣 All of your work is beautiful, but wow, that shawl is incredible! I’ve never looked twice at that pattern before, but the color you chose is stunning. There’s a real depth to it I’ve never seen in any of the project pictures. 😍 I think Loop of London is adorable! I follow them on Instagram, and I would love to be able to pop over for a visit someday. Their shop looks very sweet and cozy. If you ever need a Woolfolk mule, just let me know. They’re semi-local to me, so my favorite yarn shop stocks all of their stuff, and we don’t pay sales tax here, so it would just be actual yarn cost + shipping. ☺ Thank you for another lovely video that kept me company while I knit! 🥰

I recently bought a yarn both for the color but also for the name, and go figure, it was also la bien aimee 😂 I was looking for a lush green for the Horse Banner Fingerless Mitts, which is a Lord of the Rings inspired pattern, and la bien aimee had the most delicious green named The Shire! Of course I had t have it, even though it was very expensive. Totally worth it though, the mitts turned out gorgeous, and I have enough left over I want to use it for the details on a Mårvej Sweater Light!

Wow, everything you said at the beginning all just hit me exactly where I needed today. I know this was a couple of weeks ago, but it was for me today. Thanks for your words of wisdom 🙏. I'm a knew knitter. I'm maybe 1 month into this fun hobby. I am so that person who buys wool and yarn because I love it with no plan at all. I've finally understood why that is not ok 😕. But you're right. You like the things you like. I've done a couple of cable things for my first projects, and anyone who's a pro knitter looks at me asking cable already? I didn't know why they looked at me like that until now. Apparently, I jumped head first into knitting. I get bored of easy stiches, so I do need something different as I go. I've done maybe 10 hats but using super bulky yarn so I can see a project finish and fill accomplish faster. I want to work on so many things but only have two hands. 😕 I really just want to practice making things just so i can get into sweaters and lacy tops. My favorite items I want to make are sweaters that are very female looking. Something with bell sleeves and a very beautiful look to it. That you know a woman wears it. That's my kind of look. Thanks for your videos. I've watched a few of your videos now and love listening to you talk. ❤

I really enjoy your podcast as I am a fellow fynbo living in the US! You are such a productive and skilled knitter and I love all the finished products. I both knit and sew and have lost my knitting mojo at the moment but enjoy watching other peoples knitting for inspiration. I really like the deep blue/black LBA color for the beautiful shawl you are knitting. It is very flattering with your skin tone and brings out your eyes. ❤️🧶🇩🇰

As for the knitalong! I'm currently knitting a simple blouse using Önling yarn AND an Önling pattern! Evelyn Blouse, though I'm skipping the stripes and just doing the ribbing in a contrast color :)

I do enjoy watching your videos. Your work is beautiful and inspires me to knit more, rather than crochet. I personally think the colour of the shawl will be stunning with your complexion. Warm regards from Brisbane, Australia.

So enjoyable to share some knitting time with you! Thanks again for a lovely podcast. Every time I watch your podcast I find myself adding another sweater pattern to my wish list. This time it is the Cardi Cocoon. Just finished the Moby sweater by Petite Knit in Sweet Georgia yarn which is local to me.

Thank you again for a most inspiring podcast. I always come away with some great ideas for future projects. Seeing what you have chosen to knit and using those luscious yarns encourages me to keep exploring the world of knitting!😊. I will post on Ravelry at your knitalong to show the Klukka I knit from Lopi yarn, fit perfectly and first time with that yarn and pattern. I’m also a redhead with sensitive skin but have found I can wear this dress with a turtleneck and tights comfortably.

One of my words is "Generational" I often think to myself when I am knitting of women throughout history sitting around in fellowship with other women knitting and creating for survival. The socks for war, the sweater for comfort, the hat for the cold. I reflect that as I stitch, women all over the world now are creating as women have done for centuries before. It feels like a string connects us all through time and space. Anyway, that is my thought. Thank you for the continued inspiration and education.

A lovely poem to begin your podcast. I am also attracted to yarns for their names, and sometimes, put off yarns for the same reason. Such beautiful knits again in this podcast. It was a treat to see inside Loop. I could spend hours in yarn shops, almost as long as I can spend in book shops! I enjoyed the many and varied words on knitting. Thank you for your company while I sit and knit. And I love cables. I would try to take part if you did another knitalong, I was too late for this one.

Thank you so much for sharing with all of us. I've recently finished a gift Elinore shawl kit from önling, and I love it. You always knit great patterns and introduced me to Nordic design......thank you. I have the Esmeralda sweater pattern by Katrine Hannibal next on my needles.

Love your podcast. :) I've recently finished the Glittering Snowscapes shawl in Holst Garn SuperSoft. It is my 3rd Steven West shawl in this yarn, and I love them all. They are so very light and squishy. I also knit the Field Sweater in the recommended Isager Eco Baby, and a Gro Hat by Fiber Tales in the leftovers. That yarn has an interesting texture - almost soapy, and it is very drapey, almost like it thinks it is a liquid.

Thank you for such a relaxing podcast. As I listened Iworked on knitting the two sleeves at once on the Saglan sweater by Ailbiona McLochlainn which initially had seemed to take so long but I now realize I'm almost done. 😊

i was one of Teti's test-knitters for the Javelin shawl, and i LOVE mine -- and yours in Winterfell looks like it will be amazing (and a great color on you, in my distant opinion). bravo! plus i similarly visited Loop on my first-ever trip to London last May (from Iceland) -- amazing how much they pack into such a tiny space! lastly, so funny that I'm also in a Nordic country but wasn't aware of your Nordic KAL -- i'll go check out the Ravelry group... (and if you ever decide to try plütolopi again, try swatching it with a mohair or suri alpaca strand -- it's luscious)

I love watching your podcasts. You are so inspiring to me I'd love to ender the Nordic knit along! I'm currently on the last sleeve on my cinama sweater by kutovakika and in December I finished my fist ever sweater which was the salty days sweater by kutovakika. I love that she has video tutorials for her patterns.

Loved seeing you and your knits today ❤ thank you for sharing all the beautiful knitting words. Mine is “lifeline”. It saved me and now it tethers me. 🪁 I haven’t posted a full writeup of my son’s Icelandic Riddari in Letlopi as part of the Nordic knit along, but I hope so soon. Now I’m on to another one for my husband. Happy to be considered for the giveaway, Helle ❤
