A King on Load 11 | 6023 "King Edward II" - Dartmouth Steam Railway 30/09/2018

When it comes to large express engines in preservation, often the full strength and power capabilities of these locomotives are far beyond that of the loads they are typically given on preserved railways.
Ex-GWR 6000 'King' Class - 6023 "King Edward II" has recently been on an extended visit to the Dartmouth Steam Railway, and to celebrate the locos' last weekend in service on the line, an agreement was reached with locomotive owners; the Great Western Society, to 'see what she could really do'. As such, 'The Blue King' was operated on Load 11 while running the line's Green timetable over the weekend of the 29th & 30th of September.
The line's resident Class 25 - D7535 "Mercury" was present on the set for operational reasons regarding the run-around procedure at Kingswear, with power assistance to 6023 only being given when necessary.
With 11 coaches behind the King, as well as an idle Class 25, the total load weighed in excess of 500 tons - making for some spectacular acoustics along the English Riviera.
All footage filmed on Sunday the 30th of September 2018.

She's designed for long runs on heavy trains at speed. Not geared for this sort of work like a freight loco, so this is impressive!

Yes agree with you, these locos were built for fast main line running , not slogging up steeply graded branch line, a good effort by the driver to avoid slipping,

But still very capable of pulling heavy loads up a steep gradient at times as shown here
Another great video, and some glorious "stack talk" from the king.
Great Location + Great Train = Great Video. Thanks.
Fantastic video! -Kyle

Sadly, she will never make it there. It has been decided.
Saw the king 6023 today as I passed didcot on the train going back to Birmingham looked excellent in steam as well blue livery in the early days of br but it was soon put back in Brunswick green now it still looks brilliant a lot of bad men hated this livery in 1949 _50 company loyalties back then
Live nearby, hoping to see some interesting locks this season.
You know a king when you hear one
0:25 - 1:13 sounds so awesome #BlueKing
Is the future green?
She did well with 11 and a diesel with no helping. Some tonnage there. Though a king should do it easy.
About time they put it through its paces after all these years. Lets hope its out on the mainline after its certificate renewal.

All in good time, I'm sure. The loco is a real credit to the volunteers behind it.

Correct
Why is the diesel on the train not working?
@TheSouthernerYTChannel
5 жыл бұрын
It was only present for operational reasons, to aid in the run-around movements at each end of the line. It did work occasionally, but only when necessary e.g. departing from Greenway.

Because there's a King on the front. 😎 Nuff said. 🚂
Why the diesel?
@lowrangemaniac5326

For electric generation and assistance for brakes and hillclimb
@TheSouthernerYTChannel

Not quite. The main reason for its presence was the assistance in the run around procedure at each end of the line, with both run around loops being too short to fit the full consist. Though the diesel did assist on the power when necessary.

Hogwarts Express is/was red I think.... & a Hall class, not a Castle. Still, impressive though, whatever livery. Thanks to the veritable battalion of volunteers, we can enjoy these 'Grand Old Ladies' as they were meant to be . 👍😎👏👏👏👏👏👏
I hate diesels.
