This week I got A.I. Music creation software MUSIA to write a sax solo over Harry Styles' Late Night Talking. I then wrote one myself. In this blind listening, see if you can tell which one is which. It was also a great opportunity to sneak in a "Shoulda Had A Sax Solo" on this song!!

I think there's absolutely NO need of comparison to understand that the A is an A...I. It's evidently not improvising and repeats a maths scheme even when It doesn't appears evident. The rhythmics and beats follow too much the line of the base if you listen them in relation. Absolutely no machine can have a Heart. A machine is always programmed. A man can play by hear even if you bend on some unexpected change and be artistic, creative. A machine does not have something to say... Even with one note only

As a (now retired) researcher in a closely related field to AI, I have two comments. First, and most important (unless you skipped some detail) you asked AI to add a MELODY to the backing track. I think any sax solo that simply played the melody of the song would be pretty boring. Second, learning a bank of licks is EXACTLY how other (more successful) AI tools work, from the chess playing programs of the 1980s that eventually could defeat a grand master, through Google translate (my own area of expertise) to other applications ... if someone had the time and inclination (or tools) to do that, you'd see a whole different result. Anyway thanks for the interesting experiment and thanks as ever for the great posts.

Thanks for this thoughtful experiment, Jamie. I got something different out of this: for me, both versions reinforced the concept that good pop and jazz solos are built from motifs that are repeated and developed, instead of being streams of continuous improv that doesn't relate back to itself. (If you're Keith Jarrett, you can string out incredible improv melody lines that just keep unrolling like a carpet, but most of us are not Keith Jarrett.)

Great video Jamie and a pretty fair demo of how things stand right now, (or at least what is publically/commercially available now). But AI tools like Chat GPT4 have only been around a few months, and went from ChatGPT1 to 4 in just a few years (if that). ChatGPT10? And that 'bank of licks' you mentioned is only a matter of time. Band In A Box has really good sampling with great algorithms imagine Band In A Box AI. And the latest sampled saxes from Native Instruments are impressive. Its not clear what level of AI Musia is actually using. It seems to me not much more than an algorithm that parses the chord tones with rudimentary rhythms. Though there were some motivic elements which seemed to crop up at the same place on each attempt. It won't be long before this is much more sophisticated. The phrasing will be more convincing in the compositional element and the synthesis will be very realistic. There isn't any AI applied to that element (yet). And given the relatively musically primitive/basic nature of most pop music I would predict that unfortunately the future landcape for live musicians ain't good. Look what happened with Autotune, and for that matter all digital music production. It doesn't even need to be better, just cheaper!

I thought A sounded pretty good till I heard B which seemed somehow freer and more creative, so I guessed B as the human, and was relieved I got it right, despite not knowing much about saxophone playing. I think even if it did "learn" the whole history of saxophone music, the problem is that an AI won't ever be creative, but will just be rehashing things it's "learnt" before. A true musician is always innovating, and that's what (IMO) an AI will never be able to do.

It reminded me of bad computer games from the 80’s. 😂 Obviously it didn’t have the licks, the soul and the general solo structure (intro, climaxes and outro) - and most importantly it wasn’t very melodic, catchy and pleasant to listen to - it was very “mechanical” in lack of better words… Great solo by you though, Jamie! - Loved it! 😍😎🎷

I thought I'd give AI a chance to defend itself so here's it's comment.... Jamie Anderson's "Get Your Sax Together" is a fantastic demonstration of the fusion between artificial intelligence and human creativity. The sax solo created by AI over Harry Styles' late-night talking adds a mesmerizing layer to the already captivating atmosphere. It's remarkable to witness how technology can seamlessly integrate with artistic expression, producing an innovative and immersive musical experience. The saxophone, known for its soulful and expressive nature, finds a perfect companion in the soothing cadence of Harry Styles' voice. The AI-generated solo manages to capture the essence of the late-night ambiance, effortlessly complementing Styles' vocals and enhancing the overall mood of the piece. This collaboration showcases the potential of AI to enhance musical collaborations, pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible and creating a unique blend of human and technological artistry. "Get Your Sax Together" serves as a testament to the exciting future that lies ahead, where AI and human creativity can coexist harmoniously, elevating our musical experiences to new heights.

When I heard A, I was thinking that this AI could be great for the phone holding music composers. But when you go through the additional steps of replacing the midi music with writing out the part for a sax player to play, it seems to me it would be quicker and cheaper to have any decent sax player see and listen to the chord changes, then lay down a human solo in one take.

I'm ashamed to admit, but I like the notes (note choices) of the AI. But I liked the articulation, expression, and rhythm of B. I think the A has some cool ideas to it, that later could be developed on by a really player adding articulation, accents, and feel to it, and making it work more.

A.I. comment: Lately we've seen court cases which claim/defend copyright infringement on chord progressions. Will A.I. ever hace to defend itself? The creators of A.I. don't ask for permission on ANYTHING. Technology creates and then asks for forgiveness it seems. If A.I. can absorb like a sponge all you want it to absorb plus all of the parameters which need to limit it by instrument range and music theory should do's and don'ts, were likely to have some acceptable melodies and solos. I guess. Wouldn't one parameter be: "But don't copy anything already recorded and copyrighted!" Now that would be interesting because A. I. just might get some "writer's block." Just thinkin' publicly.

I think the more we pay attention to so called AI and get excited, the more its creators (programmers) get motivated to move ahead. If thats the Path we choose, then one day AI will outperform humans in any arts, simply because it will be able to analyze all available data in music, arts, literature. Let's be honest, the music we love is a combination and sequence of patterns and phrases. Once AI knows it all and knows our secret weapon- pauses, its done)

"(AI) hasn't learned the whole history of saxophone playing - it doesn't have a bank of licks played by the greats to fall back on". Yes it does, just that no-one has bothered to feed all that data into an AI yet. As soon as they do, we are in trouble!

AI is a much better learner compared to a human. If such a model would be improved by an experienced human training it, the results could be game changing in a year or less. The problem would be to commercialise it as you can't hook up an AI with Spotify for training and later sell its capability whereas this is not a problem for a human musician. If people at some point will be alleviated their daily burden by AI, I reckon many will discover music as a hobby. A human teacher is probably much better than a computer interface and beyond that we really appreciate humans making art with each other rather than machines, don't we? I really hope that in an AI-age the demand and appreciation for artists and musicians will be way higher than it is today.
