A homemade goat feeder with MINIMAL HAY WASTE! Nov 2013
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Sometimes I get an idea and it actually works the way I envision. After years of trying to stop my goats from turning much of their hay into bedding, I've finally got something that works. If you have this same problem, I hope you will give this idea a try.

That is absolutely brilliant!!! I have miniature horses too, and this will definitely be part of the barn finish out! Thank you so much fir sharing this!!!
Need to tell you again how much this has been a blessing to us. In the past month, my husband has said numerous times how much he loves these feeders. We got the 4th one up a week ago. No more goats in the hay barrels. No more goats pooping in their hay. No more chickens trying to or laying eggs in the goat hay. Several times my husband even mentioned your name or indirectly "that youtube friend of yours" to me about how much he loves these feeders. lol :)
OK, so I liked this idea & built one yesterday for my two wasteful critters! I used a tub I already had lying around and its a bit deeper than yours, which created a bit of a problem, in that the hay got 'out of reach' after a few hours nibbling. I countered this with a piece of plastic ( I just used an offcut of that corrugated clear plastic stuff that looks like roofing iron) placed behind the hay & angled forward at the bottom. The bottom of the plastic is forced forward with a small lump of wood behind it. This essentially forms a sort of 'chute' so the hay falls forward towards the mesh all the time. Thanks for the great idea :)
Hello, I'm from Traverse. Now I'm living 'off grid' on a mountain in Colorado. We have bees and chickens. But now we're finally getting GOATS! After looking at many videos, I'm be making this version of feeder, but with the free barrel my hubby got. Thanks for all your informational videos. ! Hugs from Derrilyn and Steve
Great Idea! I have been using horse feeders and wrapping them in wire shelving. or hanging wire shelves to the sides of the pen. But the goats stick their heads in the sides. ANd they weren't high enough. I wanted to work on new idea this winter and have someone weld up something for me. But this sounds great and much easier. Thanks Julie
OH. How clever Renee! Must file that tip away. Thanks for sharing!
had an idea for this a few years ago, but made totally out of mesh(replacing the tub with a hopper made from spare mesh), great to see that it actually works in practice :D
Thanks for posting your feeder solution. It is exactly what I was searching for! Clean, simple, and effective. Genious!
LOVE IT!!!!! I have messed around with so many feeders too and made my own of various materials and such. I have that same wire but haven't thought to add that tub to it. I know what I'll be doing this winter. Thanks so much for the great idea!!
Awesome!!! I will try this immediately. I had to laugh when you mention the price of hay. We are in Arizona and hay per bail is 15.99. It is very important not to waste hay. Thank you for the great idea.
Thank you. Thank you THANK YOU, GIRL! You know how many of these things I've made and tried? I'm sure you do... I really think this is the idea I've been waiting for. I'm literally redoing all the stall fronts to put up these panels and feeders. 👏👏
A really great idea. Will have to try this with my goaties.
Horse fence panel awesome, confirmed on tractor supply, I'm picking some up and making a similar set up, thank you for the awesome idea, we had what I think was a 4x6 but our goats kept getting their horns stuck. Looking forward to saving hay.
I have my goats in a pen made up of chain link and this will work perfectly for them. thank you. great video.
Absolute genius! I *bet* you lunch someone steals this idea, and commercializes it.
Why didn't I think of that??? Thanks for this idea :)
great idea. glad you found the fix!
Great idea! I don't have goats, but a couple of my friends do. Gonna share. ;)
Great idea ! Will be doing something like this for my girls !
You smart lady, you! Great idea! Thanks for sharing
this is a GREAT IDEA!!!!! I have many of those containers for hay (on the ground) they are now going up on the wall !!!! THANK YOU WONDERFUL IDEA!!!!!
Thank you for the great idea and i will be heading to the feed store today to get my supplies!!
Very smart! We currently have 3 different areas for our goats. Thinking of using this idea for a portable type of feeder... will let you know when I get it done. Thanks for sharing!

Michigansnowpony Just posted a video of our take on your feeder. Thanks again!
watching this still makes me want to get goats... lol!!!!
I ran all my hay through a hammer mill and fed in keyhole stanchions. That way I could mix corn or other augmentation and they could not drag excess out to waste. Nice feeder!
Looks good! Now maybe a tray lower down to catch what little they do drop so they don't trample it.
Fantastico ! Great idea
I like the hay feeder. I was doing mine with old fence with the same square size. I stuffed the hay inside like a haybag. And I like the feeder for grain.
I tried some "tote" feeders before where you cut holes in it so the goats can pull the hay out. Mine destroyed it, but I think this would work because it's on the outside of the wire. I even built one of those feeders that has the bars on an angle so they can't just pull their heads out along with the hay. It works okay, but I think yours would work so much better and it doesn' take up hardly ANY room! You are brilliant miss!

sreihart We did the keyhole feeder route too (cut into plastic barrels) and they STILL managed to waste a significant amount of hay, plus they took up a lot of room inside their pen. So far, so good with these feeders.
I love this! I love you for posting it!!
Clever invention!
With the dwarf Nubian, perhaps a chain link fence set up like this would work.
love it!
Thank you for this tip I'm going to put it to use I have an old plastic wheelbarrow I'll probably use that for the back I have for goats I'm going to be picking up by this weekend thank you again

Oh, that would work well!
What a great idea. Love it
THIS IS AWESOME!! Thanks Cuz!!
cool now I just have to get some goats, lol, oh ya and a place to keep them. One can dream can't they. I just love watching your videos no matter what you are doing.. would love to see a picture of how the colt is looking . Is he still curly?
Cool idea glad it will work to reduce waste of hay. I was wondering have you butchered the little male goat yet, or was he sold ?
Do you still use this or did you find an even better solution? Thank you for sharing. I have a dozen goats that I need to find a better option than what i do now.
Great idea, What tote did you use and where could I find one?

I think my husband got them at the local hardware store. I think they're intended to mix small batches of concrete in.
Do you think that horse panel would work for this?
Looks like the 14' hog panels i buy at the co-op. I wraped them around the round bale feeders and no more waste.

+jasonmushersee I did the same thing but when the kids are little they can get inside of it after the round bale is almost used up.
Question, would a narrow trough at the bottom of the outside catch even more hay?

Well, to a goat's way of thinking, anything on the ground (and often above the ground as well!) is meant to be stood on. So, I think a trough below the feeder would wind up being used as a stepping stool with the contents trampled.
cheap plastic toboggan sled would also work

It might -- I'm not sure it would be as deep though.
hi I just saw your other feeder vid, did the key hole feeder not work out?
@Emiajtruk

I was so excited about that one. if it didn't work out, I'll do this one
@Michigansnowpony

+Emiajtruk This is by far superior to the keyhole and much easier to make!
i was wondering how much is hay in your area now? we're paying 16 bucks a bail here in California, is that the going national rate or are we paying the "California is special" prices
@Michigansnowpony
8 жыл бұрын
+Emiajtruk Hay is going for about $4 to $5 a standard, small square (40-50 lb) bale right now for second cutting grass or grass/alfalfa mix. We have had two years or really good hay weather. Hoping for a third! I have noticed hay is always higher in California, especially now with the on-going drought in the south.
I use cattle panels for my goats, will this work in it?
@Michigansnowpony

+Helen Caluette We have stock panels for the outside pens as well. I'm afraid the spacing will be too wide to use for this feeder, however. The goats will likely be able to pull the hay out.

+Michigansnowpony Ok thank you.
trying that
Great idea :o)
how much hay does your 1 goat eat a day or a week?
I have wide cage chicken Wire I wonder if that could work.
@Michigansnowpony

Our Homestead Dream Hmmm. . . I would be worried that chicken wire would not be "substantial" enough to stand up to this kind of application. I think the constant pulling out of the hay against it by the goats would break that fine wire in short time.

Michigansnowpony We actually have an old ferret cage that has wire similar to what your using and I think it might actually work perfectly for this! My husband mentioned it to me since its broken and cant be used for ferrets anymore and I dont plan on getting ferrets again anyway.
Take all the wasted hay on the floor and feed it to your rabbits too. Then it will be a win, win, win.
