@@madogthefirst Yes, Bolivia has been landlocked only since 1883. I mean, how can you expect a history teacher to keep up with such last-minute events? ;-) Though to be really fair, that was _after_ the war that was being discussed (1864-1870), so at the time Paraguay was indeed the only landlocked country in South America.

Cody Niles I haven’t ever seen anyone carrying a gun in public in Texas. Usually people keep them in their vehicles just in case they need to defend themselves. For example, when one man walked into a church in Texas with a machine gun, people in the church went out to their trucks to get their guns and shot at the criminal. Also, in the time that the number of firearms in the US has quadrupled, the number of murders has been halved.

The British-Zanzibar rule was not exclusively British Imperialism (though that was obviously part of it). The British did not approve of the new Sultan because he was pro-slavery and wanted to restart the slave trade in Zanzibar, which the British had abolished when they took over in the first place. The puppet the British tried to install was pro-British, but also anti-slavery.

Well, about the Paraguayan war what happened is that Uruguay was undergoing a civil war, Brazil was supporting one of the sides while Paraguay did the same with the other one, however this led to both countries going to war with each other, Solano wanted to cross Argentina to aid his Uruguayan allies, but the Argentine government did not allow it so Paraguay declared open war on Argentina and invaded it, of course Brazil allied Argentina and their supporters ended up winning the Uruguayan civil war, so Uruguay also declared war on Paraguay.

I'm Uruguayan, and "Triple Alianza" war is still one of the biggest shames in the history of my country. First of all, there was lack of motivation on engaging war with Paraguay, we were inducted by Argentina to take a part in the war. Second main reason, it was a country wipe out without rhyme or reason, even when Paraguay's emperor was a potential risk for the rest o south america, their civilians did not have anything to do with that. Invading forces made sure that there weren't men available to fight in the whole country, that's why up to these days Paraguay has an increased rate of women over men. This is just a peak of what that war was, but you can almost call it genocide (Emphasis in almost). Thanks for this interesting video, and sorry for my english

The only Reason Bismark didn't annex Austria when he created modern German was Austria's involvement in the Balkans. The war of the triple alliance (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay) is well known in South America. Bolivia is also landlocked after loss of territory during a war with Chile. Which is why the country still has a Navy, currently restricted to Lake Titicaca, waiting for the return it's coastal territories.

The Swiss Civil War of 1847 cost less than 150 lifes. The General commanding the Federal troops issued an order to all soldiers to spare the soldiers of the other side from unnecessary violence and he planned the campaign in a way, which would end the civil war in the shortest and most unbloody manner possible. So it was a very civil war.

So i'm not a historian, so take everything I say with a grain of salt since most of it is from memory from my high school days, but the Paraguay War wasn't nearly as ridiculous as the video made it out to be. The reason Paraguay declared war on Argentina and Brazil (Uruguay came later if i'm not mistaken) was to control the Delta of the Prata river, one of the biggest trade routes in south america, ensuring Paraguay had access to the sea and furthering Lopez's imperialistic plans. Also the Paraguayans had,at the time, one of the most well trained fighting forces in south america, outnumbering its tree adversary armies tree to one at the onset of the war, since surprisingly enough neither Brazil,Argentina or Uruguay had a developed formal army. Eventualy with the modernization of the Brazilian military and the heavy use of slave soldiers Paraguay was overwhelmed, but they were extremamely sucessful in the begining of the conflict. That being said the whole affair was a massive mistake on Paraguay's part, but the war was without a doubt one of the most pivital moments in South American history

Well dang it I keep getting these videos in my recommended and every one is more intriguing than the last. I would like to add the Toledo War 1835-1836 .Things got so heated between Michigan and Ohio that both governments sent militias to the border. No casualties were taken as the federal government got involved. This is supposedly the beginning of the rivalry between the colleges.

Canadian here. Yeah, we knew about our peacekeeping forces being in Croatia at the time, but I'm not sure that "war" was publicized (I may be wrong, I was only 15 or 16 at the time). I knew there were conflicts and some engagements, those got reported, so maybe the entire incident was downplayed. It was also pre-internet days, so it was a bit easier to shift media focus (or outright ban the reporting). I want to look into this more, because outright media censorship isn't something we'd generally condone as a nation. In this case, our forces were there at the behest of the UN, the mission was to keep the peace and then they were attacked. We weren't there to conquer or overthrow a government. And yeah, our military maybe small compared to other nations, but it's modern and very well-trained. Even US military who have served along side our troops will vouch for that, you don't mess with the Canadians. Re: Declaring independence. That's basically what sovereign citizens do and every government ignores them until they break the law. Then hilarity ensues as they try to explain to arresting officers how the nation's laws don't apply to them. Needless to say, they are wrong.

Fun fact: the only South American nation to support Paraguay was Colombia, even writing a law in July of 1870 stating that if Paraguay were to disappear as a result of the war any Paraguayan that made to Colombian soil would recieve Colombian nationality. In november 15th 1980, more than a century later, this law was revamped and became a binational agreement that facilitates Colombians and Paraguayans to get the new nationality by simply asking for it. Nobody ever uses the treaty though. Fun fact #2: Paraguay was, for a little while, the first independent republic in the Americas.

as swiss history teacher: the "Sonderbund" was not a country. it was just an alliance of tiny catholic states (switzerland, tiny as it is, is a union of states). but yes, it was the last active military engagement of switzerland. but is it really surprising? the swiss federal state was founded in 1848, that is 33 years AFTER it became neutral (or more strictly, after the helvetic union that later became switzerland became neutral) and small scale armed conflicts are pretty common when new countries are founded

  • @jurgnobs1308

    @jurgnobs1308

also: whether it was religiously motivated or not is actually very disputed. the catholic cantons happened to be conservative and the protestant ones were liberal. the catholic ones wanted to keep the old order with the swiss pseudo nobility (we didnt have nobles for ages, but we had patrician families which basically comes to the same) while the protesant ones demanded democracy and citizens rights. so you can just as much see it as a conflict between the political sides.

  • @jurgnobs1308

"Sonderbund" means "special union" or "special treaty". and that is what it was. basically, the tiny states that made up todays switzerland had been allied through various contracts since medieval times (some starting in 1291, some joining later). and the Sonderbund was basically a union within that union. imagine you have 20ish states that have been allied for centuries and were thinking about forming a country together, but some of the states dont want that and instead form an alliance within the bigger alliance to try to stop these proceedings. that was the Sonderbund.

About combining christian elements to original religions... In Finland you can still find old gravestones that have both the cross and a bird. Bird because in Suomenusko, you have a personal bird that brings you the first third of your soul, "henki", at the moment of your birth and the same bird takes it on the moment of your death and carries it to join the collective "henki" of your family. Even now, some people say "he lost his henki" instead of "he died", but they do not usually know what it means as "henki" can also be translated to "life" or "breath".

Hey, Brazilian fan here! It was strange to see that people outside South America don't know about the Paraguai x Uruguai, Brazil and Argentina war. It's a thing that we study, at least in Brazil - it's the biggest international armed conflict we have on South America history. It was right after the war between Brazil and Uruguay, when the Paraguayan dictator did not appreciate the brazilian invasion on Uruguay territory. They imprisoned the then president of the province of Mato Grosso, and the guy died in prison. Six weeks after, Paraguayan troops tried to invade Brazil. The conflict lasted for about almost six years, and it was bloody. Of course Paraguay was the most affected country, but Argentina and Uruguay also lost about 50% of their troops, and in the end about 40% of Paraguay's territory was divided between Brazil and Argentina. In total, it's estimated that almost half a million people died during this period, including military and a large number of civilians. And just after six years after the war ended that the nations signed peace, too. If I'm not mistaken, was the fourth war in that region in this time period. (Sorry for the broken English, it's obviously not my first language and I find it really hard to write in it)

This is a really simplistic view on the Triple Alliance War, while Solano did had his “Napoleon” complex, he didn’t just started a war just to show he could be a conqueror and impress his “celebrity crush” (Napoleon was already long gone by the time, like, wtf). Basically, years after there was a civil war in Uruguay, Solano supported one side from a distance, because in return he was promised access to the sea - yes, Paraguay is a landlocked nation and, as one knows, that’s not a favorable position to be - through free passage by the Plate River, but Brazil intervened in the war, in favor of the other side. He then decided to just get access to the ocean himself, and crossed Argentina to attack Uruguay, in order to gain control of the River Plate Basin, and attacked Brazil as what he saw it was a preemptive strike, since he thought Brazil was going to attack him anyway. While to tackle the biggest 3 nations of South America while you are one of the smallest might sound as a dumb thing, I should remind that it was not a war of conquest over those nations, it was about gain strategic control over the Plate River to get access to the sea; ALSO, in the beginning of the war Paraguay had the largest and best equipped army of the war - Solano did was a fan of Napoleon after all and so invested massively into the militarization of the country - and really didn’t expect the war to gain such scale, he thought the 3 countries would let it slide after a few battles, and again, Paraguay did won the first battles of that war. He didn’t count that specifically Brazil would get so quickly prepared with a massive conscription campaign. In the end, it was only Brazil and Paraguay, with Argentina dropping soon after Lopez was repealed back into his borders, and Uruguay soon after. Brazil however wouldn’t settle for anything but Solano Lopez resignation, and hunted him down into the country. Was Brazilian Emperor Pedro II to hold the blame for causing the massacre of Paraguayan population with his unwieldy obsession? Or was Solano Lopez to blame, for putting his power over his own people and refusing to surrender? That’s a question for discussion. But it’s important to notice that hindsight is 20/20 (oh, look, a New Years Eve reference). Nothing is that simple.

In response to your question about when to declare independence. At least in Latin America we celebrate the date the Spanish signed the independence treaty. Some might celebrate when the colony decided to become independent but at least Mexico and Central America celebrate the signing of the treaty. In my country we also celebrate when the signed documents arrived to the country since the signing was done somewhere else.

I feel like I need to add something to The Northern Crusades, as a Slavic person who converted to The Old Faith. This wasn't a war against Norse pagans, but rather a war against Pomeranian Slavs who were known as Wends in the west. The Crusades had ended with the sacking of a temple of Arkona on the island of Rügen (Rana in old Slavic dialects). Note that this essentially erased the last remnants of Slavic pre-christian history, and essentially robbed us of our culture. Learning about this made me actually research the Old Faith. Thankfully, the Old Faith remained alive in some ways, since the converted Slavs have kept practicing most of its traditions, masquerading them as Christian (like burning the effigy of Morana, the goddess of winter and death in the spring months, or jumping over the flames of St. John, the Christianised version of Yarilo, the god of Spring). Needless to say, forced convetsions should never be celebrated. They destroyed cultures, and many priceless pieces of history that we will never get back

To be honest, when i read the titel of the video i was like: will the mention the sonderbundskrieg (nr. 5 switzerland vs switzerland)? And i was pretty sure they wouldnt because noone outside switzerland knows about it. First things first, this war wasnt about confessions but about the form of government. It was the radical-liberals against the conservatives (most conservativ governed cantons were catholica and most liberals were protestant, but thats aminor detail). The main point of the war was the question: do we wana be a federal state (liberal oppinion) or do we wana be a confederation of souverain states. And mr Terry: switzerland was home for 2 protestantic reformers, calvin in geneva and Huldrich Zwingli in Zurich. But there is 1 truly outstanding story. The general of the swiss troops, Guillaume henry Dufour (later he was the 1st president of the international red cross, and cofounder of it) made his first move against the city of Fribourg (sonderbund) instead of fighting a huge battle and creating a bloodbath he sourrounded the city and wrote a letter to the government of the city, telling them how many cannons and troops he had stationed arround the city, ordering them to capitulate or to force him into atrocitys. 2 days later fribourg was conquered withoud 1 official fired shot. Thanks to doufur this war endet with about 93 soldiers who died and 510 soldiers the were wounded (source: historisches lexikon der schweiz).

They lost almost their entire young able-bodied male population and they had to implement programs incentivizing men from all over the world to move Paraguay which is why Paraguay is so ethnically diverse today. Like today 40% of the Paraguayan population today is of full or partial Italian heritage.

Just a correction about the Balkans re: linguistic diversity. There is virtually very little differences between: Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin. It would be like a variation of Scottish English, South England English, Welsh English and Irish English. Different accents but they understand each other perfectly. That's why during the times of Yugoslavia the language was commonly referred to as Serbo-Croatian. Of the other former yugoslavian Balkan states: Slovenian begins to be different, and Macedonian too. Most of these former Balkan states use a Latin alphabet. Serbia and Montenegro use both Latin and cyrillic and I think Macedonia uses cyrillic.

U said until the nation your declaring independence from acknowledges it... they had the thought of the rest of the world or at least other strongish nations accepted it. And I think that is more correct. Because the nation your declaring from would hold out the longest. Of course when they accept it then you are. But I believe it happens before that. If your not paying taxes and they are having trouble collecting with force and other nations treat you as indepent accepting loans and trading, accepting currency definitely.
