While down in Austin, Texas at Texas Traditions to watch famed cowboy bootmaker Lee Miller work on my new pair of bespoke cowboy boots, I took the opportunity to stop and have a long conversation with him about his history with bootmaking, and the history of the cowboy boot itself.
Our series with Lee Miller follows along the making of a pair of western cowboy boots totally by hand by one of America’s most famous boot makers, Lee Miller. The entire series is comprised of six separate days of filming, each which will be released individually. This is in addition to separate videos documenting the bespoke measurement process, last design, and boot leg design. Links to these videos can all be found below.

Lee and Dominic Casey should do a make swap. Where they go through the process of taking measurements, making Lasts, and making each other a pair of shoes for Lee and Boots for Dominic... And have Kirby's team video document it.

I have been watching this process since Kirby got the measurements. I absolutely love watching cobblers/bootmakers doing their craft. Watching these videos makes me really want a pair of Cowboy Boots from Lee Miller. If I had the money, I would do this in a heartbeat.

Kirby I love what you do. I live in Eastern Europe and work throughout the world. Watching your show has helped me be the best I can. I had my first pair of bespoke shoes made last year and I'll never buy off the rack again. Same with clothes. Your simple down-to-earth way is what I enjoy the most Living in Serbia has been a blessing we still have craftsman here

Hello Kirby, I really like your style - and even the spread of your collars. But since you have a long neck (just like myself) I am pretty sure a 1 cm higher collar would suit you better - and would make a difference for the whole outfit. Best regards and keep the great stuff coming!

1st I have to tell you that I enjoyed your video and as you said about European people coming to the States and mixing and matching different styles of boot making I kept thinking about Lucchese started his boot company in San Antonio Texas in 1883. To this day Lucchese boots are the best factory made boots in the USA . I do know that custom made boots are best because they are made just for your feet.

I own a couple bespoke pairs, if you look historically at the 1880s function dominated. Roundabout the 1940s you begin to see form as well, a further expression of the art form.

Due to the time required to make anything handmade to fit, wouldn't a cowboy order his boots at the beginning of the cattle drive, in anticipation of paying them off when he had the money and returned to the beginning point?

My thoughts, don't shoot me.. You have the city slicker interviewing the country guy. Both very gifted at what they do. BUT, country guys will not relate to the city guy in his suite and his big words. You need to relate to the audience....and this would be country folks. Dress and talk and that level.....like Lee....just saying......

You ever been to Austin? It’s not country in the slightest. Also, how many salt of the earth country folks you know wearing $5000 bespoke cowboy boots. Most I know are just as happy in $100 Ariats from China.
