A History of California and Mexican Heritage

This week we are coming to you from the Old Mission in San Juan Bautista.
If you grew up in California it's a pretty good chance that you visited one of the 21 missions throughout the state when you were in the 4th grade.
School kids keep coming here every year to make that field trip. Today archaeologist Dr. Ruben Mendoza joins us to explain about the Old Mission's history and he going to give us a bit of a tour.
We are going to take a look at some California History with a Greg Smestad who can trace his family tree back eight generations.
And we are going to meet the talented playwright and film director Luis Valdez. He is best known for his movies Zoot Suit and La Bamba and he makes his home right here in San Juan Bautista. (Episode 208)

Love Love Half of California “hot oven” in Spani-Latin/Also the name of a character “ queen califa” in a fictional novel by Garci Rodriguez which was popular during the time of the Spanish explorers - is still Mexico in 2020..a country where Spanish, other languages and dialects are spoken . Dad told me the Spaniards named California that way because of it’s beautiful climate and geographical “fantasy-like” features as well as it being hot like an oven..Other Mexican border states share Spanish names as well like “Arizona” which means. “ arid” in Spanish, New Mexico even the northern state of Colorado which means “red” in Spanish. My Grandfather an immigrant from Spain to Mexico, I have deep roots in California- (Spanish explorers Conquistadores) including deep history lessons from my grandparents- love the white adobe, red tiled rooftops / palms of Spain and Mexico everywhere,,,..but I also love my American US people and what they have done with this part of California - so if you are from California- you are my “Californiano/a” - regardless of race-as well- and I LOVE YOU TOO...Every race is cousin to each other so lets be ..
