That first image of Maui with hardly any houses hurt my heart. I miss the old days so much.

How can I be the only one here with a comment here?? I moved to Maui in 1999 and unfortunately moved away in 2015. I owned a small business, worked hard and played even harder all over the island. I will always miss the magic of the times I spent living my life like a never ending adventure. I tear up just thinking of the memories I had there and wish I never left. I hear Maui is changing so much so that I need only appreciate the time I was blessed with living there. I had the time of my life and hope to venture back to Hawaii some day no matter which island, I believe there is still magic to be had.

I lived on Maui from April of 1990 until August of 1994. It was one of the highlights of my life. I lived in five different places in Kihei and went to Hope Chapel Church. I camped at Kipahulu in the Haleakala National Park about 11 times and jumped off of that bridge into the water below about 50 times. The memories are profound and thanks to KZread I can watch endless video clips of The Island.

we just went and every time I go to Maui I wish I lived there! It is Magical for sure! Love this video, reminds me of when my grandparents used to go there in the 50's and 60's and wear the matching Hawaiian shirts and dress's that my grandma made! you were lucky for having lived there in your lifetime..I dream of mine!

Kaanapali began development in 1960, partly in reaction to the congestion which even then was thought to exist in Waikiki. In contrast, Kaanapali was planned to never be as built up. When I first stayed at the Royal Lahaina in 1966, two years after this film was made, much of it was unoccupied and the dining room was nearly empty each night. Today Kaanapali may not be as jammed as Waikiki, but it sure doesn't have the wide-open spaces that appear in this short movie.

I know kaanapali is a corporate creation but I still dig it. A Hawaiian dude still jumps into the ocean off black rock every night. Ok corny but fun. I will say in my dozen or so visits I’ve never seen a single person wearing a suit let alone a tuxedo. Lol

They've managed to ruin just about all the nice beaches on Maui with horrible hotels and stupid golf courses.

You should see some of our coastal cities (in Belgium).... It's the unwritten realm of 'ugly'... If you wouldn't know any better you'd think they're trying to scare tourist away...

Mixed emotions watching these type videos. On the one hand you have this idea of paradise which we were brainwashed with and i admit it is a heavenly idea... but you can't get around the fact that these wonderful islands and practically the whole country is colonized... invaded... Lots of Hawaians probably harbour some anger underneath all those bright smiles. Some islands even want to remain isolated if i understand correct. As humans we have such an indestructive will to think good of ourselves and deny what's lurking from within the darkness of our soul.
