Anne Umland, senior curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture, looks at Joan Miró’s "Self-Portrait I" through the lens of our uncertain times, and sees the artist “watching the world as he knew it collapse before his eyes.”

Doom 2020...self portrait like the movie US 2001 + 19 = 2020 for the president coming from a tower of new york...signs of the times
1:23 I was honestly expecting her to say, "Due to the coronavirus..." I hate this year.
Helen Khan, who died last year, age 102, introduced me to Joan Miró’s works, some 30 odd years ago.
i love curators' talks...how wordy of descriptions...as complicated as this master drawing...
The rendering himself transparent part made it click.
Love these, I learn so much! I've loved this piece & knew really nothing about it, thank you
I do see something of a mystery in that painting let me know if I have touched on something. I see a man possibly struggling with his own understanding or interpretation of divine thinking and how he reflects the human mind and celestial spirit to connect as one force. Thank you for sharing your video. God bless you all.
I was a disciple of his for many years until I finally found a style of my own. A visit to the Foundation on Mallorca is highly-recommended. Miro's work is joyous and just thirty minutes from here, in Edinburgh Scotland, there are two large bronze sculptures of his. I hope to go back to Mallorca some day and would prefer not to return. I wonder if there is a market for Scottish Fauvism there?
he is one of my favourite artists love the work
Stunning.
It's a wonderful drawing. It's lovely to see it close up in this video.
Stellar and haunting.
In 1937-8 the danger of fascism and the feeling of arriving a war world were evident: this is the fear in the eyes of the selfportrait
So very very true.
Great analysis!! Thanks !!
Beautiful texture art
Amazing
Love how she explains this!
Beautiful artwork
Excellent I love Miro🐱🌷🌹🌈
It seems to sink way deeper than the surface leads you to believe. I have drowned and I don’t think I can swim back to the surface. Captivating.
yes
A motionless movement like his said
this is outstanding
Now I want to buy a shirt.
We are all transparent because we are more than body
Is it pastels and charcoal?
You can see how this work influenced Gorky and Matta
I've never seen this painting before, so thank you for the introduction. I enjoyed listening to your explanation.
Sort of like us watching 2020 happen
Hi. How are you? / I heard it in winter in Korea. I hope you stay healthy and do good things together. Thank you. ^O^
I love her thoughts on the drawing
The obvious conscription in the nuance neo- modernist expression of contemporary ideals reflected in the organization and juxtaposition of proportional anatomical reference to a conceptual reference blah blah blah. It’s crap. So is every single random blob splat & scrape. Sophistication in the presentation is required in order to justify the $ spent & conserve momentum in the hype to increase value. After all of the coolest/most influential person sez so, I’m gonna do it too. I’m cool too ya know!
o_o
He’s trying to warn us of the impending apocalypse
It does look like he is facing things. Very unfair.
It looks like a virus rendering on the right cheek as well - go figure...! Stay safe everyone... 😷
everyone should be allowed to lick one (1) piece of art, and this one should be yours
You can see art. You can see also kitsch. There is no difference.
Absurd interpretation. Miro was not speaking to the year 2020. You can't just talk about your subjective feelings and pretend that's what the artist felt too.
