    I love using all of those tunings you mentioned. Some other I love using and experimenting with are: New Standard Tuning (C-G-D-A-E-G): I love how a G minor played like 7-7-8-X-X-X sounds like no other G minor. So much fun. I really love playing Cure songs like Plainsong transposed to “power chords” in this tuning. Open Esus2 (E-B-E-F#-B-E): Super similar to Open E, of course, but your barre is a sus2. All your sus2, sus4, majors, and minors are readily available for chord work. Placebo Tuning (F(occasionally F#)-A#-D#-G#-C-C): great for playing Placebo songs, but also the drone of the C tuned strings is just a great sound under chord work.

    When I was first staring with the guitar, I tried a perfect-fifths tuning and found that while it makes open chords easy to play, I didn't really like the sound for most purposes. Instead of going that route, I decided to go with the opposite approach and tune the top four strings very close (minor thirds d-f-g#-b ), put the fifth string down an octave from the fourth (D), and then have the sixth string go back up to a G, making the overall tuning G-D-d-f-g#-b. I would think that 0-x-0-x-2-x would yield the same voicing as your Gm, though I don't typically use open strings much except for D. While 0-0-0-2-2-3 would work for G minor (play as many or as few notes as you like), my normal Gm is x-5-5-5-6-8.

    Not only does it sound great, I find there's a certain utility to it. It's handy for bass for songs in E, a lot of songs have you go back and forth between D and E. It has certain advantages over all the other ways to do that, more oomf than standard tuning (playing the D an octave higher), doesn't mess up fingering patterns like drop D does, doesn't require a 5 string, has that open string tone unlike the 3rd fret D on a 5 string or BEAD bass, and isn't as hard to play in the higher range as with a BEAD bass.

    One I use almost all the time now is “DGDGBE” The idea was initially used for my finger-style playing but I developed some knacks for it. So, because I also like playing rock and a touch of metal, I use the GDG to play power chords and if I feel like I need to make chords sound “bigger” I’ll add harmonic notes using the B and E. I’ll use the lower D if I feel like I need a harmonic “boom” so to speak. Ideally with rock, this in theory gives more dynamic and sonic space for bass instruments to not get so muddy with the guitar in mixes. Haven’t tried it because I haven’t used it for ensemble work other than stuff I write for uni! However, the tuning is great with my finger-style playing! I always find myself able to mess about with this tuning more comfortably than I have with standard. If anybody wants to give this a try get in touch and I’d be happy to share some riff ideas and chord shapes!

    Greetings samuraiguitarust. As they say in the classics: 'Love your work!) I would add that you don't have to remove the low E string for G tuning. You can drop it down to a D. This way you still have the ability to do the standard tuning fingering for the 12 bar boogie pattern it's just down a tone. i.e.instead of open E and second fret on the A string (a B) rocking up to the 4th fret on the second string (C#) - and if you want the 5th fret (D) as well - it's open D on lower string with an A sounding on the second fret of the second string then rocking up to B on the 4th fret and a C on the 5th. Hope that comprehensible but I do this for open G without having to sacrifice the lower string and thus restrict the guitar to the open G tuning. Thanks again.

    An alt tuning I like and have used exclusively for 7 or 8 years is new standard tuning, CGDAEG. There wasn't much material out there showing what it could really be used for, I would mostly find jazz players or someone found a spacey sounding 2 chord loop. So I spent years never touching any other tuning and eventually found a way to use it in a more practical pop/rock setting. I had to relearn all the chords and some non-jazzy extended chords are super easy to play. It also plays nice with guitarist who are in standard and drop D/C tunings, so there's no need for me or someone I'm playing with to retune.

    I think it's just plain smarter to not even remove it. You could just tune it to another note to compliment the tuning. You could even tune it to the same pitch as the next string. ...Or just get better at string muting. There's really no reason to take it off at all.

  • @ThatRipOff

    royalcat10 Pretty much lol. Removing an entire string just screams “I don’t know how to play with 6 strings.” Even if you do. Like there’s only two ways to look doing that: Either you have no idea what you’re doing, or you just want to be Le Quirky and unique. I have a guitar with 5 strings, all tuned to A. The lowest is the same as the A on a bass, the next is the same as the A on a guitar and the other 3 are an octave higher than that. I usually let the low ones ring out while playing a melody on the higher strings. Another tuning I've used is where you tune the G up to A. That can sound pretty interesting. I learned that from an Adrian Belew instructional video. There's also open G tuning which is essentially the same as Keef tuning except you keep that low E and tune it up to G (or you can go down to the lower G). Open A also works similar to open E.

  • @Hiretsukan
    @Hiretsukan5 жыл бұрын

    As others have said, DADGAD is common in Celtic music, and folk music in general. It's not entirely clear where the tuning comes from as Martin Carthy and Davey Graham both attributed the tuning to each other, but it seems that it arose out of folk guitarists in the UK in the '60s looking to emulate the drones of pipes and church bells in traditional music for solo playing; this is also where Jimmy Page learned it from. I think these origins are quite helpful to keep in mind when starting out with it; pick it, don't strum it, letting bass notes ring out and emphasize the melody played on the higher strings. Another good one for fans of that ambiguous sus chord sound is CGCGCD, used predominantly by English folk guitarist Nic Jones; check out the song "Canadee-I-O" as a primer.

    5:25 Next up is a really beginner friendly alternative tuning, down tuning a half step, we're going to spend very little time on this one cause all you do is tune all the strings down a half step. This is to help out with the singing cause we can play what we know but we don't have to sing quite as high anymore, in the case of stevie ray Vaughan it also made it easier for him to play those insanely thick extra heavy gauge strings.
