A Guide To Buying Your First Rolex

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Let's not beat around the bush, buying your first Rolex watch is a big deal. A very big deal. It's something you need to be prepared for both financially and emotionally. Just over three years ago, I bought my first Rolex--a classic 36mm Datejust--after extremely careful consideration and meticulous research because, well, it was something I did NOT want to screw up.
Explore the He Spoke Style x Michael Andrews Bespoke Collection: hespokestyle.com/shop/
The entire process took me about nine months and throughout that time I gained a lot of knowledge about Rolex watches themselves as well as the emotional arc of going through the process from beginning to end. If you're watching this video, you are probably very much in the same boat that I was, so I put together my best advice, tips, and questions to ask yourself before taking the plunge into that first Rolex watch.
Top level, there are five things to consider:
1. Why buy a Rolex watch?
2. When should you buy your first Rolex?
3. Do your research!
4. New or vintage?
5. Which model Rolex should you buy?
I dive into each of these questions in-depth in today's video. And if you care to, you can also read the companion HSS article right here: hespokestyle.com/first-rolex-w...

Sweet watch!!! I’m no millionaire, just an average middle class guy with a family. I start getting into automatic watches a few years ago and thought I could never afford a Rolex. Well, I decided to open a watch saving account and start saving. It will take a few years but I will have my Rolex and I plan on passing it down to my son who is 3 years old as I type this✌🏽✌🏽

Lol all these comments about luck or what not. For those wondering, I was not born into a crazy wealthy family, just your typical middle class suburban family. Although my parents ate successful, i never played off of theirs. Anything I’ve done has been on my own. I found a mentor at the age of 15 and once I had turned 18, graduating high school, I had a property to sell. Also I did not buy the Rolex, instead I’ve been saving and will be looking to buy my first house within a year.

There are other choices than a “vintage” or “new.” Just like a car there are some watches that have a large markdown when you buy three years old. Clearly there are some Rolex models that only go up in value, there are also some that drop in value. Even if you get a Rolex that is 10-15 years old you can normally buy almost any model for a significant savings. I have two Subs and a GMT Master II. Each watch was 5-10 years old and I purchased each at an appreciable savings. Thanks for the video.

I came across my first Rolex by chance about 6 years ago. Didn't know reference points, or the difference between a submariner or a sea dweller. I was 16 at the time and went to a second hand shop, saw the 16600 sea dweller from around 2000-2001, loved the clean crystal without cyclops and purchased it. Box, papers the whole shabang, and it was a bloody good choice i must say. These days my watch knowledge is incredible, and i'm working in the industry too!

For how long I wonder ? I mean.. the vintage ones are quite affordable. So maybe when inflation plays a big part, ur watch could be worth twice but that amount might only fetch a longines in the future. Just thinking out loud

@@DavidRamirez-vc8dr Yes, Apple is technically the biggest watch manufacturer now. But so was Seiko and now you can buy an automatic Seiko watch for 70USD and it tells time for years. If you're getting an apple watch you're going to need to upgrade once a year or two because technology becomes obsolete. With the price of an Apple Watch you can get a nice mechanical watch that lasts longer than your Apple Watch. And if you bought the right model of Rolex watch, the price will go up in the secondary market.

My uncle got me into Rolex. He owns the President. I thought as a 17 year old, I will get that watch, as my grail watch. Well needless to say, I bought my First Rolex stainless with 18 c bezel at age 20, brand new at J Jessups and sons. I did finally get my president ( vintage watch at age 44. I’m 58 now, and still own them both today, and get them cleaned when needed. They are awesome time pieces, I’ll never sell them, but pass them down to my boys. Can’t go wrong with these fabulous time pieces, in my humble opinion. Great video, and I concur with your advice, anyone can achieve these great time pieces, when it’s right for you. Cheers, Matt

The history and story behind a watch is what I go for. There's nothing, in my opinion, when it comes to watch history that can top how the Omega Speedmaster Professional became the Moonwatch. That is one epic story. So in selecting my Rolex, it was a bit hard as not one model I thought had such monumental history as my Speedy Pro Moonwatch. The Datejust being the watch that figured out adding the date to a watch I considered heavily, and I may eventually get still. The GMT made for Pan-Am pilots I thought was a good choice since I travel quite a bit, especially to Iceland which has the GMT+0 time -- I am loving Iceland more and more every time I visit. So needless to say, I got a GMT Master II with the Jubilee bracelet.

  • @hespokestyle

Absolutely agree re the Speedmaster. It's almost overwhelming the amount of history, scholarship and intensity that the watch has. In fact, to be honest, I was a little intimidated by the numerous rabbit holes you could go down with it so didn't really consider it so much. It is a great watch though, for sure, and a classic for a reason. Great choice with the GMT/jubilee. Classy combo.

Good video. I want to get my first luxury piece for my 21st. At first I was really drawn to the Datejust. There's something about the fluted bezel that I absolutely love. I've started to gravitate towards a 36mm Explorer though. The thing is, I can't decide if I should get a luxury piece like a Tudor Black Bay for a couple thousand less just to get my foot in the door of luxury watches, or go straight for the Rolex

  • @hespokestyle

Many thanks and congrats! Well, if you want to step into Rolex and are considering Tudor because of the price point, I would encourage you to explore pre-owned. You can really get an amazing deal. My personal advice to you, as a 21yo, is to go for the Explorer. It's classic. It's versatile. It's totally cool. Check out the pre-owned options at Crown & Caliber: bit.ly/2qWFwMr And remember that if you do pull the trigger with them, you can save $150 with HSS150! Cheers and good luck. I am not sure I agree with the idea that you should go with a classic/plain watch as your first Rolex or any other luxury watch. If the watch represents a milestone in your life then you also want to capture your state of mind, your likes and dislikes from that moment in time in the story. After all it was that very person with his/her own quirks and preferences who got you to that stage of life. If you are simply buying it for style or as a everyday watch, then you definitely want to pick up something you like looking at. The only reason you would buy a plain watch which you find boring will be to have a high resale value, in my opinion. Great video though!

I’m 30 and have saved up a decent amount, thinking to spoil myself by buying a Rolex, wanted to get the sports series Rolex ( GMT root beer , Batgirl ) but the grey market prices is crazy and retail is almost impossible from a local AD unless i have purchase history, which I don’t. Which means its almost impossible to get them at retail price, but at the same time i do not wish to pay such a premium at the grey market. Looking at the date just 36/41mm but the stainless steel series are hard to get to, just hoping that Rolex increases the supply and not limit them . Fingers crossed..

Good for you! Congrats! I'd say silver if you want something more elegant/dressy and black if you want it to appear sportier. Comes down to how you want to wear the watch most. Good luck! Report back when you decide!

I wouldnt say its an investment. It wont depreciate as quickly but unless you can afford or can get the popular sports models (GMTs, explorer ii, etc.) It most likely wont increase in value and will lose value. Thats why you can get a lot of perpetuals or datejusts in the 2k range. Still a great watch from a great brand.

You're right, an investment is an overstatement. That being said my three year old GMT has gone up in value $4K since I bought it, I just had to get it re-appraised for insurance purposes. And my first Rolex, the Explorer II Polar current model which I traded for the GMT, is now regularly changing hands at $2-3K more than what I paid for it. Having owned several Omega watches in the past, it has to be said, it is refreshing just how well Rolex in general hold their value compared to other brands. It is not difficult to buy one, own it for 5, 10 or 20 years, and be able to sell it for the same or more than you bought it for. Realistically though, if your goal is merely to purchase it as an actual investment, you are going to have to work very hard to get a particularly popular model, then store it in a safe, unworn for years, hope it is still popular in the future, then sell it. And unless you get insanely lucky, there are probably far better investments you could make that would not involve keeping a physical object in a safe and hoping the future is kind to it.

He was a working class guy and worked for both of his Rolex watches. I’ve been saving to buy one myself and have decided on buying an Explorer II! It’s relatively a good starting price without overspending for a first entry level Rolex and has all the functionality of the GMT Master and Submariner for roughly $5,000 less.
