A Guide For Cutting Straps // Strap Cutter // Tool Time

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you have been doing leather craft for a little while, you may be at the point where you want to cut your own straps, rather than pay over the odds for the pre-cut option. If this sounds like you, then the strap cutter is a tool you will want to consider for this job. In this video I will go over everything you need to know about the strap cutter, and share my best practices for getting straight straps over and over again.

A little tip. Before putting the arms through the hole, in the gap on the side closest to your hand glue a square of sandpaper. This stops the arms (and therefore the width of strap) slipping. Sometimes even with it fully tightened the arms can move leaving you with a wonky strap.

I’ve found that to get an initial straight edge on your leather, a rotary knife along a straight edge gives excellent results and is very fast in comparison to other methods. Also a draw gauge is a cheaper alternative to a plough gauge but takes a bit of getting used to.

On thinner leathers then the rotary knife is ideal, but on thicker hides like a bridle butt, the best option is to hand cut the strip. I haven't used a draw gauge before, because that exposed blade does not appeal to me! 😂

Had a "duh" moment during this video. I'm new to leather crafting, and a couple of weeks I was trying to use my strap cutter and it wasn't going so well. I had been under the impression that the two arms of the cross section need to be set very close to the width of the leather. This was making it very difficult to begin the cut, as my leather was a very thin, floppy, leather. While you don't directly address it in this video, I noticed that your arms were tightened with a gap that would be a bit wider than the thickness of the leather. That would have made my difficulties, a lot less difficult. Thank oyu for providing me with a "duh" moment that will make my life easier in the future. :)
