A Guide for 2024 High School Cross Country Summer Training

Спорт

This video is to help provide high school runners with a starting point for building their summer training plan. This is not to undermine your coach's plan. I am not a coach so let me know what I missed!
I know that I could have mentioned:
- Running with your friends helps keep you accountable
- Strides are important to maintain footspeed. 100m, build for the first 30m, 80-90% all out for the next 40m, build down for the last 30m.
- Core provides strength, stability, and can improve your running form
- Road races are a fun way to get in a great effort, but you should not be racing every week. At most run 3 races over the 2-3 month summer.
- Ultimate Frisbee is a great post practice activity!
- Have fun!

I ran XC my entire life with a direct focus on Track and Field and just recently was offered the head coaching position at my high school and with very little knowledge of the training regiments this has been a great first step for me and I appreciate this video and the time it took to put it out to the public. Good luck this season!

This is exactly what I did when I was in high school! I hated the weights/ core workouts and I had a terrible diet in HS. I learned it the hard way when I got to the collegiate level. It made me a better runner! I now coach and I try to teach my athletes all the right things I should have done their age. I’m going to be sending them this video. They need to hear this from another HS athlete. I wish you all the best in your running career.

@@ParkerMaxhey just a question , I run XC and track and am in my sophomore year, I am playing basketball in the winter because I’m in Nebraska and there is no indoor track, by playing basketball does it make me lose potential as a runner? Like should I quit basketball and just run in the winter instead?

I of the E: Fartleks are a great workout for the summer. Start easy with 30 seconds on 30 seconds off and build up to the pyramid fartlek. 30-1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1-30 with the rest being half of the rep. Great video, great tips!

I'm a beginner runner. In eighth grade, I started doing track and field as a pass-by sport. I wasn't fully committed to the sport until the end of the season. It's been about three months and my timing has increased drastically and my stamina has decreased so much to the amount that doing a mere 800 is difficult. My season starts in a month. What would you recommend me to do to increase my timing and distance? Is there any specific goal you would recommend me to set for each week or day to slowly increase my stamina and endurance for the season? My coach would like me to at least be able to run a mile with a cadence of 170-180 and my highest so far (in May) has been 165.

I'm also training with limited space due to being away from home. I have access to a 400m track but that's all.

For the first 4-5 weeks, just focus on building mileage. Run all of your miles at an easy pace and about 2 to 3 times a week run some strides and hill strides at the end of your run. , Then you can start slowly incorporating one to two workouts a week. I would say one of those workouts should be a hill workout and the other should be something that tempo pace. I think a great workout is a 5 min, 4 min, 3 min, 2 min, 1min fartlek w/ half rep recovery. The reps should start at tempo pace, but progressively get faster each rep

@@ParkerMax what I was thinking of doing … 1 . Warm up jog 2. Stretch before run 3. Run: 400 splits -> 2-3 sets 4. Break 5. recovery lap around the track 6. Final stretch Now would you recommend me follow that or what would you like for me to maybe change it up within my workouts

  • @ParkerMax

    @ParkerMax

    Жыл бұрын

I would not recommend you do that until August. The goal for the summer is to build your aerobic engine and not your speed. You can maintain speed by doing strides or a few 200s after a tempo workout. If you are keen on running a track workout, I would recommend you do something like this instead: warm up, 2-4 x 200m @ 3200m pace, 1-2 x 2 mile tempo, 2-4 x 200m @ 1600m pace. Of course, you should consult your coach and evaluate your summer training before taking advice from a rando on the internet
