A Great Watch That's NOT Worth Your Money - Sternglas Kanton Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this Sternglas Kanton Review, I take a look at Sternglas' latest Swiss made piece and compare it to the Sternglas Naos Automatik review I did a few months ago, to see how they compare. This Sternglas watch review features everything you need to know about this new release and whether I'd buy one for the RRP.

Great video Ben, and you are right about the price, but I guess because it has a Swiss Made on it they think that it justifies the price. It does have a really nice movement, and it looks like it might be their top grade with the blued screws and all. Thanks again for the honest review, Brian.

Great review as usual, keep up the good work! As for this watch, I have to say I personally like the design. Some minimalist/Bauhaus-inspired watches do nothing for me, but this worked. However, not worth the price IMO. Like others have mentioned here, with the Max Bill Junghans (which I drool over from time to time) with true historic heritage to Bauhaus AND similar price point, there's no discussion. And lots of other good affordable alternatives have been mentioned here as well. It's simply too expensive - hence Uncool!

I am huge into movements, but like my wife has said "you look at the front of the watch and around the sides of the watch not the movement majority of the time " I tend to agree. A watch needs to look and feel premium to match the movement and price. Otherwise, you're not going to wear an ugly ,to you, watch regardless of how nice the movement is or how much you paid for it.

Hi guys! I'm new to watch, I love the design of this watch and almost at the verge of buying it. It have pretty much every think I look for. Clean aesthetic bauhaus style, automatic movement that I can see. And under 600usd which is my maximum budget. I really like the junghans but they are too expensive and we cannot see the movement. I really like the design of the junker 6060 but the fact it's not saphyre crystal turns me off. Any other recommendation before I buy my first automatic watch?

Bit late here, but what the fudge!. Anyhoo, lovely watch. Like so many things, its beauty lies in its simplicity. Was tempted by one of their earlier models('Telemeter'?), but didn't bite. This one however, I think I'm tempted, as I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive everyday watch. Thanks for the heads up young sir.

For slightly less money, I would much rather choose the Tissot Carson Premium Powermatic 80. The build quality is actually Good for the price Due to the fact that it's an actual swiss watchmaker. Plus, the value of the watch will hold much better because it is from a brand that has a long rich watchmaking history.

A Max Bill With a hand wind movement starts out at $450. This watch has a better movement in the STP. This watch actually has better specs across-the-board except water resistance which is equal at 30 m...The problem is the asking price at over $700. Considering the decorated Swiss movement They would probably sell like hotcakes for anything under $ 500. Thanks Ben for another great review!

I've tried a couple of their models while stayed at Germany (my brother in law owns both of them). While they're certainly very attractive and have not bad specs, like many here pointed out they are definitely overprice for a 5yo microbrand. You can easily get a reliable minimalistic watch from other established brands for the same or less amount of money. If they would've sold Naos quartz for let's say $150 USD, I'd certainly say that it's an interesting proposition, but for $275 I can't justify it. It really doesn't offer anything that others can't for the money.

  • @MybeautifulandamazingPrincess

@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess I was talking strictly about the price justification. In case of a well-established brand you get the name heritage that validates a purchase for a lot of people. You get a more reliable QC. Frequently an in-house movement. Warranty service around the world. Sternglas offers none of that but commands a much higher price. For what?

Well this watch has a STP 1-11 inside which belongs to Fossil and is a clone of the ETA 2824-2. The ETA is a Rock Solit movement which can be found in watches in the price range from 300-2000. (In the higher price points it has been Modified.) About the Fossil Movement I cant say anything. If Fossil is using it for their own watches u can Grab one for 200-300 €. I would recommend the Max Bill automatic. It uses the J800.1 caliber which is a modified ETA28242. (Not blanc as sternglas is doing it) Price point 750-850 (depends on where u buy it) Same looks basically and a watch which has also some story, heritage and is made by a well Known brand. JUNGHANS was founded 18XX (forgot) and was once the biggest watch producer in the world. Good german Company. This sternglas is not a crap watch. But it is way too expensive.

Great review as always, however the price on this is absurb. There are tons of far better value props out there. Love all of Sternglas’ designs but their cases are way too thick and bulbous, especially for their style of watches. I chose to return my Naos because of this. Also, because the watch is literally all dial, they wear a lot larger than the size would indicate. I think a 37mm would be perfect.

I agree that Sternglas is overpriced. The point you made that they do not retain value is actually a plus for me. This means that if you really like the design you can always go second hand. I believe that you get a fair deal if you get any of the models for half price. Meaning 100 quid for the Quartz Naos, 200 quid for tha Marus or automatic Naos and 400 quid for the Kanton. Just be patient and you will get those watches at those prices.

My Sternglas watch is 2 years old and the crystal has started misting up since it got splashed in rainy weather last month. Should I send it back for repair to germany or get it repaired by an independent in england? Paying money directly to a German company has become difficult because of Brexit, to the extent that Sternglas could not sell me a new strap. Thank you.

The placement of the date window is dependent on the movement, not the watch designer. The bigger the dial, the farther inwards will be the date window. To have the window replace the 6-hour marker, the watch will have to be a lot smaller in diameter than it is currently.

I do not agree with the comparisons made in this video. This watch looks much better than the one from The Fifth. Even if the movement used in both watches is the same (which I am not sure if it is), the movement in the Sternglas is decorated with blue coloured screws. While I have not seen either of the watches in person, the Sternglas watch also seems to have an overall better finish for the case and the strap. And even though both are microbrands, I think Sternglas is a more premium brand than a fashion brand like The Fifth. The comparisons with the Naos from Sternglas (which I own) fails to mention how the Kanton has a much better finish and a much better movement. The case thickness is also significantly lower compared to the Noas. These can at least partly justify the increase in price. Of course, the Kanton costs almost twice as much as the Naos, but the Kanton is also meant for a more discerning customer who will appreciate the differences. It is true that the Kanton is in the same price range as watches from Junghans. But Sternglas is not the only microbrand selling watches at that price range. Comparing the Kanton with Junghans Form A, the Form A does not seem to have a decorated movement, and while this is subjective, I find the Kanton to be the better looking watch overall. Unfortunately, Sternglas has built a reputation for offering watches at a particular price range, and a lot of customers seem to find it hard to accept that they are slowly launching more premium watches. Most of the people criticising the comparatively premium pricing of the Kanton also do not appreciate the improvements over other models in the Sternglas range, like the Naos. I am seriously considering buying this watch, and I currently prefer this over a Junghans Form A.

£700 is too much! I'd see it around the £300 range, but nothing more. The dial looks plain to me and the overall design isn't standing out enough for me. I give them credit for the Swiss Made. But the 5th looks way more upscale, especially with the applied indices.

Pretty cool, but factoring in the price pretty uncool.

The only mitigating factors are thatvif you want a bauhaus style watch with a good movement there arent many in this price range. Also their straps are extremely nice but they're only worth $50 so it doesnt justify the price.

Hey Ben, great review and production on your video :) Luckily for us, the cheaper Naos has a much more unique and attractive design. Sternglas are on to something because there aren't many German style "Bauhaus" watches with sapphire glass out there besides the much more expensive Nomos watches (maybe Stowa too?). Kanton has a beautiful and probably more accurate movement, but it really doesn't make sense to try to incorporate them into their watches... I doubt it's going to sell much, especially with that bland design. I still think the Naos is a bit overpriced right now at 369 euro... will keep an eye out for coupons or big sales, maybe the next time Black Friday comes around. Can't think about paying more than $300 for one.

i think the design tries too hard to be inoffensive but ends up lacking some flavour and character for that kind of asking price

Cool, could have been better. I like both of the Sternglas watches well enough, if they were given to me I'd put them in my watch box (instead of selling them) and when it came time to wear one I'd be asking "do I want to wear a black faced watch today, or a white faced watch?" - which shows that I think about them about equally, which shows that they would need to have about the same price for me to consider them. I have a watch that is vaguely similar, and I keep it, and people go wild about how simple and elegant it looks, but I paid a lot less. No, my watch is not Swiss made, but it was about 1/20 the price.
