Beyond the hip, 90s nostalgia, there aren't too many animated movies that captures growing up quite as realistically as this. It dares to make its characters believable - in a Goofy movie!

@@DazsdWTP It’s less about the more outlandish parts, and more about the little moments and emotions between Goofy and Max. This is a great and relatable story about a loving single dad that adores his only son and wants to protect him, and a son who craves independence and distance from his embarrassing dad. It’s basically a more relatable Finding Nemo.

I heard that the script writers told Bill to drop his Goofy voice during the hot tub scene because they thought that it would inherently decrease the level of the scene. Bill tried it while keeping it on and they were impressed with how the Goofy could dial it down low enough to stay serious so they kept it.

Even though this and the "Goof Troop" series were retconning the 60's Goofy toons to have something to tap into the late 80's/early 90's Hip Teen ethic, I remember one critic turned off by what a negative SNOT Max Goofy came off as in being embarrassed by his dad. Over-the-top 90's Disney sitcom humor is one thing, but parents weren't amused to see Disney going overboard in "How Much Your Kids Should Hate You".

Well, most parents are just overgrown kids. They're Pete, actually. LOL. That's part of the problem. If someone dared to make a realistic film in America about growing up and a believable relationship between a father and son, parents and conservative groups everywhere would lose what little minds they have. That's why most of the stuff I grew up with came from the UK, growing up in Canada. After watching a BBC production, everything else just seemed third rate garbage. And they went places US TV never dared. Mrs. Slocombe's Pussy - gotta love that innuendo. And let's face it - the 90s were about brats. The real 90s. Not the one on US TV.

interestingly, i knew someone who was born mid 90s who said that for a long time their parents didn't let them watch disney's the little mermaid because they thought ariel was a bad role model for kids by being so disobedient towards her dad. all a matter of perspective. but it clearly misses the point of this film to think that max hates his dad at all, even if he embarrassed by him, which is probably as close to a universal experience as anything gets, and here is supposed to be enhanced by his dad being a slapstick disaster, lol. part of the problem is miscommunication, as well, where max doesn't know why goofy is so adamant about this trip (i.e. the phonecall with the principal), goofy doesn't know what the principal was actually mad about, & goofy also isn't listening to max while pushing this trip on him, which anyone would resent, teenager or no. i agree with chris's reply, too, that parents who find max's behavior intolerable are probably represented pretty well by pete. what stricter parents might see as max "hating" his dad is really just max feeling able to express himself honestly around his dad, while we know PJ isn't happy about his relationship with his dad, only worrying about how pete might come down on him for whatever transgressions, but he also probably doesn't ever let on to pete how he feels about anything. and, while on the surface, maybe pete and Pj seem to have a smoother relationship, that's superficial, and the emotional bond likely suffers for pete's "under your thumb" approach, even if PJ won't ever express unhappiness with how pete treats him to pete's face, which might look to these parents, as it probably does to pete, like "good behavior." the fact that max feels he can be frustrated with his dad in the first place actually allows them to communicate, which ultimately strengthens the relationship, which is the whole point of the movie. the conflicts they have might at times make it seem like a rockier relationship, but if any parent simply wanted to stamp out such moments or hold their kids into only behaving "pleasantly" around them, while that might seem better on the surface, it erodes the actual bond. max and goofy would probably end up with a closer relationship down the line, while once PJ has more agency as an adult and can escape from being under his dad's thumb, pete might not see as much of him, or any conversations they have are not going to be genuine or involve any emotional connection, because that's the only relationship that was allowed.

Yes, I love this movie. For it to be a goofy movie (no pun intended) it’s so emotional and serious about it’s message. Despite staring a more silly, fun, and joyful character, this movie shows that there’s more to him then just being Goofy. He can get upset, angry, and be just as serious as anyone else. Also it shows me how much I need to cherish my parents as well even though I’m getting older. That’s why this movie will alway have sweet spot in my heart. 😋❤️

Is there and I remember it like glowing in the night it was weird and I actually don't know if this actually happened this might just be something I dreamed up but I am pretty sure it happened.
