A Good Argument for God | Derek - Nevada | Atheist Experience 22.16

The Atheist Experience episode 22.16 for April 22, 2018, with Matt Dillahunty and Jen Peeples.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblogs.com/axp/
KZread comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZread comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

This...this guy was soooo pretentious and yet couldn't answer the simple question...he called just to hear himself talk and to try and argue with Matt about what HE believes and HOW to use words lol...Matt said it plainly...if God was real and we had evidence...we wouldn't be having these discussions for years about I'd he's real and yes it WOULD make headlines if we had irrefutable evidence

We humans refuse to believe God could be real. It is fascinating the primary outright says the top apologists dont use the best arguments for God. So Frank Turek, Jason Lisle, Kent Hovind are not top apologists using the best arguments for the existence of God? I argue they are. It is the atheists that do not accept those arguments and that is the issue. What is the best evidence for the existence of God? I would say it is a tie between the existence of earth and the existence of all humans who have all or nothing unity. Why don't we hear about this in the news? Because the news is largely liberal and anti-God. Of course a liberal anti-God news station is not gonna broadcast an argument for the existence of God, not only they don't believe in such, but they would have to admit they are wrong themselves to believe there is no God. Also, is it really a coincidence the Bible is banned, restricted or illegal in select countries? It's not a coincidence. The same principle applies. People suppress the truth. People suppress the truth because they don't want others to know the smartest people alive are suppressing this.

@@iamsalayaI agree with you, the argument itself wouldn't be enough for me. It's in two parts. The argument...and supporting evidence/confirmation. Because I have zero confidence in theists ability to not miss something in their reasoning given that their reasoning is heavily motivated. So yes, argument and confirmation in reality. We didn't just theorize about black holes and stop there. We had GREAT arguments and evidence that they existed first. Then we went out and confirmed they do in fact exist. Similarly with dark matter, we have very good reasons to think it exists but science isn't pompous enough to close the issue there. We are doing everything we can to observe and interact with whatever "it" is. And that's with the most unbiased method to come to truth humans have ever come up with. When it comes to god, I'm gonna need a bit more than just a solid deductive argument. I'll believe it's likely at that point... But I won't jump on board until we observe evidence of it because the motivated reasoning alone is enough to convince me that some small flaw may have been overlooked. We are not infallible thinkers. It's why observation is such a huge part of science and why we don't do it from our armchairs like theists.

I don't know how Matt can still do this after so many years... When's the last time he got a really fruitful argument from any of the callers to this show? I haven't watched them all, but I still have not seen any. He always ends up having to make the same arguments, and getting the same dumb silence at the other end. It must be so frustrating... As evidenced by Matt giving in to just tuning this guy out completely. I guess I must be one of those annoying atheists who doesn't suffer fools very well. I use to think Matt was a little dismissive, and even insulting with some callers, but now I kind of understand... It takes a special kind of patience to do this all the time! I'm glad someone is doing it. Funny to me how they can make any argument they want and yet they still insist on using the same old crap logic to justify giving up rational thought. Makes me want to yell and scream, and pull my hair out... (But it scares the other patients, so I try not to. lol)

@@MrDwicker He is exhausting, but not completely stupid. He is a skilled sophist. He is trying to use fallacious 'logic' to get Matt to trip up on trivial tautologies. Which he will then use as an excuse for Gods existance. He basically just burnt up 20 mins saying that there 'could' be an argument for the existance of God , but we just haven't discovered it yet. Matt agrees, but says that until such evidence appears, he will continue to be skeptical. This isn't good enough for caller though. Because he has a confirmation bias (possibly due to his upbringing), that if it's possible that God 'could' exist, he will continue to believe. All the rest is bullshit and window dressing.

YES!.INDEED!! if i made you to serve and worship me, my will would be the only will that mattered. i would definitely not show myself but pick a select a few monkeys to tell others to believe, and if they didn't, i'd flood the world of all those without respect for me..i'd produce dimensions and make worthy adversaries to have challenge me, and if any of them rebelled because i win all the time, i'd cast them down to the monkeys, of which for their half-wit powers could mess with the monkeys, and if they saw their halfwit powers and turned to them? They'd be attached eternally to each other resulting in them half-wits, giving them the knowledge to evolve, and give them a system of their own beliefs, resulting in another and another and another instance where my powers would destroy them all who rebelled with their rebellious minds and actions. if these newly made monkeys, which now had a half-wit brain, would turn to me and beg til they either repented back and obeyed or would be banished from all of the glorious creations i had made in the first place was MIIINE, and I let them have a choice, to play on the beautiful garden i had worked 1,000 years on, since my watch is different. My day, is your thousand years and vice-versa ..Since the half wits taught them some things, and they thought they could stand a chance with me? When their halfwit created magical beings that i gave that power to, gave them some magic..and rebelled even more, i'd say ok monkeys..You now..have a soul, and I would corrupt it. I'd then cast the halfwits out into another realm. And could go on and on, til the ones who through the prophets would obey or not and have them (write this all down, warning others to worship me in tradition or die a terrible death. (pt 1)

why is it that virtually every caller that claims to have proof of God will do anything but actually give the proof of God, they will argue definitions of words and morality and try to get the host to admit something that contradicts what they said previously. At some point at about 14 minutes Matt says do you have evidence of the existence of God and the man says yes I do but, and then goes into this lengthy debate about something that said to the previous caller instead of Simply presenting his proof. I was 34 years old when I figured out that atheist weren't people who didn't want to worship God nor people who chose of their own free will to not believe in God, but we're inside people who had determined that there was no good reason to believe in God. To prove one of my brothers wrong I started studying the Bible and history to prove the Bible was true and within a couple of months I was agnostic Within a couple of years I was an atheist. I do not choose not to believe and when somebody actually presents real evidence that a God exists by the definition of an all-powerful being I will admit a God exist and begin to examine which God it is and what he expects of us. During my agnostic days I'd come to this conclusion if God was benevolent then good people who exercised compassion and empathy wood have a blessed afterlife and those who did not would simply be destroyed or allowed to die. if God was going to punish anyone by means of torture then he was menevolent and not Worthy of any kind of recognition or worship. Once I added Evolution and science to my studies and no I'm neither and evolutionist or a biologist but I am smart enough to understand what I read I came to the conclusion that we evolved the state we're in and that biologically everything of who we are is stored in our brains and when we die, our brain will be dead and there will be nothing left to move on to another plane of existence. that being said I live my life according to the moral code that I first bring no harm people or animals, I'm not a vegetarian and I do empathize with the treatment of animals but changing my diet will not save them. the second part of my morality is to do the best I can to respect others property to help those that I can and to care for my friends and Neighbors to the best of my ability because I believe that I will be surrounded with good people who will in turn help protect and provide for me in the same capacity.

@OAKMEGA JOESEPH There is no missing link. Species slowly evolve. And obviously, we don't have a fossil of each and every generation of the individuals we would consider a "transitional" form between our ape ancestor and the modern human (which is also an ape), so yeah we have gaps, but they are smaller than you think, and even having gaps won't invalidate the theory of evolution (although the bigger the gaps, the less we have proofs of our evolutionary history). Every species is transitional, the chimpanzee of todays are the transitional form between the chimpazees of yesterday and the chimpanzees of tomorrow. A transitional species is just a species that we identify as a species that is genetically inbetween an older species and one of its descendant species, but that means it is relative to the species you first choose as ancestor and descendant (you could choose the "transitional" species as the ancestor species, the starting species, meaning it would not make sense to say it is transitional in this context, and then choose a more modern form of the descendant species: that is a descendant of the descendant species, and bam! our initial descendant species is now considered a transitional species if we take those two others species as points of reference because it is historically and genetically inbetween the species we used as a reference). Evolutionnists change their mind, because they corrected themselves. And it is normal for a science in its early ages to make mistakes. But we are now completely sure that birds are descendants of dinosaurs. But it's weird to think that God made the human such that it shares 50% of its DNA (including a DNA that serves no or few purpose) with a freaking banana! It's weird to think that God just made transitional forms (genetically inbetween an ancient species and a modern one) of many species if they are not related. It's weird to think that plants were created before the sun according the genesis when they need photosynthesis to survive. It is weird to think that even Christians agree that the mechanisms of evolution do work when it comes to breeding dog, but these same Christians cannot consider for one second that there are no reason that those mechanism could work with all species at a much larger scale with enough time.

If gods really existed, you wouldn't need an argument for their existence any more than you need an argument for the existence of spiders because they would just show up and all you would have to do is point to them and say, "There they are." But no, you have to make believe that gods exist. What boggles my mind is how much time and energy so many people waste making believe and worshipping something that clearly isn't there. And to what end? A couple of weeks ago my aunt wanted some of the family to meet for lunch at 1 PM, then changed it to a late lunch/early dinner at 4 PM. When I showed up, I told her that I was glad she had changed the time to 4 PM because I would not have made it at 1 PM. She very earnestly said, "I know you don't believe it, but God has a way of making things work out." I just shrugged because I know that's how she believes. At the same time I'm amazed at this kind of thinking. If God can take time out of his busy schedule just to make our little lunch date work out, why can't God ever just show up? My aunt is so indoctrinated that without giving it any thought, she almost automatically makes believe that God somehow magically causes even the most mundane things to happen. What a mover that God, hè?

Dude, i deal with the exact same thoughts regarding my own mother. She’s the same way, anything positive is attributed to god and his “grace” yet anything negative she usually says something like “well that’s life honey” I’m always thinking “well if we’re gonna give him credit can’t we blame him as well?” You know, from 18 to 30 years old i was an active addict, real bad off toward the end. MANY times, before i woke up 7 years ago, i would cry and pray for help. Hoping and waiting for intervention. Nothing, kept getting worse. At 30 years old i finally found a rehab that saved my life, but after i left the program (been clean ever since btw, 5+ years now) my family seems to give “all the glory to god” Where the FUCK was he before i lost my career, before i made several enemies and burned many bridges. The 14 months i was in rehab I AM THE ONE who went through it, learned and bettered myself. Why the absolute fuck do i have to suffer, then give credit to god for learning and bettering myself? I ended up telling her once “NO, he wasn’t there learning and growing. I was, give me the damn credit because y’all didn’t hesitate to crucify me for every mistake”. Needless to say we’re close, but we don’t discuss spirituality. Just my two cents

But if god can do mundane shit then he can also do good things, like preventing the holocaust. I suppose it at least proves god is evil if he is all powerful (and exists of course). David Hume sums it up better though "If God is omnipotent, omniscient and wholly good, whence evil? If God wills to prevent evil but cannot, then He is not omnipotent. If He can prevent evil but does not, then he is not good. In either case he is not God."

@Chris Stols seems you just made all that up. Gods existence hasn't even been proven yet, but you claim to know so much about god. Prove existence first then take it from there.

@Chris Stols in fact, atheists tend to know the bible better than theists do. Many people turn athiest after reading the bible. Don't you think Matt dillahunty knows the bible better than you, and he's an athiest. Your comment was not thought out well. There is no proof in the bible that god exists.
