This video is very inspirational. Yes, I’m just starting to learn and believe that it all starts in the inside. How you see yourself inside with radiate out and attract that into your life. I’m just starting to believe this. Thank you for this video. Jennifer, I wanted to make sure you saw a book that I recommended previously. It’s called Lays in Summer Lands. It is a poetry book. Please do more! I love these videos. I loved the “remain unbothered” video. I am in my 60’s and things things still apply and are so important. One goes through different phases in life and now, nearing retirement, is another key time for a ‘glow up’ and a new phase of life to explore or further one’s dreams. It’s a life long process.

@@anitas5817 I agree with you, Anita! I’m also in my 60’s, and everything Jennifer says still applies to me, still makes sense, but in a different way than when I was younger. We do go through different phases in our lives! I want to make the most of the years I have left to live, and remain passionate, vibrant, giving to others, bringing hope and joy around me. In order to do that, I have to be vigilant not to forget that it all starts inside, in my heart, and keep watching beautiful and meaningful videos like this one that helps me reflect, stay true to my goals, and get inspired! 😍👍💜

This video moved me. I tried my whole life to fit in. I tried to be cool to be included and I was miserable. When I turned 40 I finally embraced my inner nerd. I love Lord of the Rings, classical and jazz music, and I geek out at all the seemingly insignificant things like the morning sun beaming through the green leaves. I finally found people who relish in my joys and me in theirs. I'm now 53 and I'm truly free to see and adore life.

When life was slower, I remember my mom (of 5 kids) always taking time for herself each week to go bowling w/her team, play cards w/friends, go to ceramics class each week or re-apholstering class to recover her furniture. She was always doing something outside of the home setting just to be her own self! I still remember that. In this fast-paced demanding society, I feel that I need to return to who I am daily.

Jennifer, thank you so much for mentioning God as the agent who will bring people into your path who will feel like part of your tribe. That is incredibly true! And yes, those of us who watch your channel are probably not the trendiest because we believe in things like being polite, creating beauty in the home, treasuring things other people in the world dismiss, like a nice cup of tea at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, or sharing the joy of wonderful books, great pieces of art, inspiring music. so, back to your video, but I just wanted to jump off for a minute and thank you for what you’ve said about this. Jennifer, this touched me so much. For so long I felt like Ann Elliot from Jane Austen's Persuasion; like I had lost my bloom. I felt that I ought to just accept this new blossomless, neglected woman who had nothing of interest to say or do or enjoy. I wasn't depressed, just apathetic. I had apathy for how I looked, what I ate, where I went and the ambivalence ran my life. Last year, I hired a life coach; who I'm happy to say she is now a dear friend; who helped me to start the process of knowing myself and nurturing the little light that was hidden under a bushel deep within me. Slowly she helped me to gather the courage to start my youtube channel and helped me to focus on my passion. I guess, through the process, I remembered who I really am. It wasn't however until I saw your video on glow up after 40 that I started to work on my appearance, sought help for my skin and some other ongoing medical issues. I can slowly, achingly at times feel myself awakening to life again; to reading, and learning, and the classical music I enjoyed as a teenager, to new recipes and daily experiences. I have been frightened by these changes and have had to face many childhood demons, fears and ways of thinking that no longer serve me and just trust the process. I'm grateful for videos like this that continue to spur me on.

Exactly the same thing happened to me a few years ago. Best friends for 24 years. She sent me an email & then completely ghosted me. I was really devastated & hurt. It took me a couple of years to feel less hurt, but I am still saddened by it at times. We did of course both change over the years, but I didn’t think it warranted such drastic measures! Anyway, just before it happened I came across a saying something along the lines of ‘something will be released in order for something better to come into your life’. I remember at the time thinking it was an interesting message, but it instantly became obvious as soon as it happened. I must say now it was almost a relief in many ways, & I have felt free to be more of who I am since. Sending love to you Leslie. ❤️

But at the same time, I know its more a season of pulling away for all of us. By our 50’s we’ve lived several versions of ourselves! I watch all your videos but somehow I missed this until today. This video is a powerful smack in the face for me. I realized this week my happiest days are when I have an afternoon just for homemaking. I’m 54, married and have a 17 yo old daughter. What I wanted to be when I grew up was June Cleaver. I wanted to be an old fashion wife and mom, laundry dinner, cleaning all that. But the heaviness of life (work and taking care of my aging parents) has sucked all the joy out of me the last few years. My home keeping just gets done when I can fit it a few minutes here and there instead of being my top priority!

It's a breath of fresh air to view a "glow up" video that is about more than the external. Now, in my 50's, I've become aware of, not just my looks, passions & goals, but my contributions that are more eternal and beyond myself. Am I loving others enough? Am I taking care of the lonely, the broken-hearted, and the poor in my little corner of the world, in large ways and small? Am I being a light in this world? Am I being a messenger of hope & grace? I guess, having raised my kids, I have renewed energy for this now. I've definitely learned that there are seasons in life where we can focus on different things. In these stages, I've learned patience and grace, for myself & others. Now, in this stage, it is the focus on the eternal that I want people to remember most about me. I guess, being past the midpoint, I do find myself thinking, "what will my legacy be?"

Your comment resonates with me. I'm also in my fifties, and more than ever aware of the limited time we all have. I also am starting to contemplate how to best use this time, not only in terms of living joyfully, and with grace and beauty like Jennifer, but also in terms of thinking more of others, and trying to be more of service, and to extend more love and generosity to others.

👍🏻. Brava, Jennifer. Another lovely video. You talked about the heaviness of life and that struck a chord with me. Five years ago, I had breast cancer. I went to a holistic practitioner, as well as traditional doctors. The holistic practitioner asked me “who has been blocking your femininity?“ This practitioner also told me that my cancer was trying to teach me something about my life. That was intriguing. You don’t get that kind of conversation from standard traditional doctors. My holistic practitioner told me to make my cancer my best friend, to embrace it, and let it teach me what I needed to learn. He told me that I grew the tumor for a reason. This was fascinating. I guess you could say this was the beginning of my glow up. I slowed down my life. I reframed stressful situations and looked at them differently. All my life I had been reacting and reeling from outside stimuli. I took this very seriously and meditated, took long walks, prayed, and asked God to show me where my life was off track. This may sound strange but I think the cancer was a gift. It got my attention and I paid attention to what it was trying to tell me. To make a long story short, I lost 40 pounds without even trying, just by becoming more loving toward myself. I started showing myself compassion. This inner work video was very good and brought up all these memories from five years ago when I started my glow up process. I am now 66. While my life is not exactly where I would like it to be, I’m taking things one day at a time with grace and prayer.

@@TheDailyConnoisseur I am cancer free. I worked with my holistic practitioner for two months before I had a mastectomy. My initial biopsy was quite doom and gloom. However, following the mastectomy, the tumor was no longer aggressive. This confounded the oncologist. I knew it was from my treatments with the holistic practitioner, cleaning up my diet, and most importantly, cleaning up my attitude.

This video came just in time for my birthday. Now that I am halfway through my 40s, I have realized that I believed all that nonsense from the media and what others (besides my parents and mentors) told me in my teens and 20s. Only if I knew in high school that there would be better friends ahead of me! I agree life is too short to worry whether I did something wrong! Instead, I am learning to focus on becoming confident and enjoying the work in process. It is the perfect time to pursue my passions, including the arts, books, and languages, especially as an empty-nester. Even if I never turn professional, I won’t regret spending my time pursuing my passions (and I absolutely don’t miss trashy TV and pop music, including the latest music videos). It is my time to be an elegant lady-it is never cute to be a middle-ager acting like a child or teenager. Thank you and happy Thanksgiving! 💕

I agree with many about mentioning God. I couldn’t begin without that being first. I am now 56. I’ve lived the past 20 years as a Christian counselor. I’ve just recently retired. I’ve wondered what was next for me. What I see next is a being a person of help. Many around me are in situations that I can be of help to. I can pack my little basket of goodies and my apron and be on my way to bring help and compassion where needed. My other passion is history and decor. I’m presently redecorating my house in a Williamsburg style and I’m loving the process as well as older fashion. Long flowy dresses. Different, yes but it is who I am on the inside, loving everything old. Great video!

My husband I “adulted” hardcore in our 20s: - married at 20 and 19 respectively - I graduated with my bachelor’s at 20 - we bought a house then paid it off - had our 3 children - began our retirement accounts and began fully funding each year once the house was paid off - began homeschooling We knew we were countercultural by doing what we did, but our goal was to go full force on the hard things while we were young and energetic. By the time we are 40 though, our children will be older teens / entering adulthood; our dream is to then go to Scotland once our youngest completes homeschooling. Now that I’m 30, I’m working towards bettering myself as a wife, mother, homemaker, educator, and person. I have a long way to go, but I’m grateful for channels like this and people like Karen Andreola to teach me and inspire me yo become the person I dream of being.

I have to admit I really haven’t met people who share the same things but thanks to virtual I am able to do things with people on line. Oh Jennifer, this is so good as always. At 57 what you said is so true. My perspective now verses my much younger self is so much more confident. So much life between then and now .. and I wouldn't change a bit. . I count my blessings now more than my mistakes. . and I find peace and joy when I look back and see all the times God was and is there .. and I just don't worry at all about what others think. . in a kind way of course. .as the old saying goes. . "I gotta be me!" :) As a grandmother I have learned to enjoy the moment and to share with them the things that interest me. I love to hear them say. "grandma, YOU can do THAT!!?" :) God bless you for your passion and for sharing with all of us.

One thing I really appreciate you talking about is how calling out “Trashy” society wasn’t the best way to combat the hyper-sexualization so common in our society (particularly of young women). I have been following your channel since 2016 and even subscribe to the Chic Society, so please know that I am a supporter of your worldview; however those videos always left me with a feeling I couldn’t shake that I didn’t like. It’s not necessarily a need to be “politically correct”, but just a sense that listening to a woman call other women “trashy” wasn’t the most productive way to fight those issues, I think. I appreciate the way you have grown and acknowledge there are better, more graceful ways to approach that issue.

Oh my gosh, Jennifer...THANK YOU SO MUCH for this!!! This is a video I will be watching repeatedly. I am a 59 years-old mother of three adult kids. They are all independent now, but still lean on mon occasionally. My story is a long one, but...in a nutshell, I feel that I have completely lost my own identity over the years trying to please everyone (including worshiping the Lord according to a one-size-fits-all belief system). I'm looking forward to living a beautiful life, but I need to get-a-grip and practice the things you're talking about. I hope you'll consider doing a Part II.

Good morning Jennifer, for the last few years I have been trying to forgive other people that have hurt me, just lately I’ve realized I need to forgive myself for permitting others to disrespect me and the reason is I was always, always a people pleaser, like you I didn’t want any drama or conflict but ironically that made people disrespect me and took advantage of my kindness for years, why did I let that happened? I guess I didn’t love myself and realizing that at my age, well, doesn’t feel very good, however the important thing is that I’m starting to distance my self from these kind of people, and I feel so much at peace, I was sick of the the disrespect and like you say at this age we should care about criticism anymore. I remember when I was young, I’ve always liked to dress very classy, some said to me I dressed like a nun, I know now that I just love to dress classy and that is what I will do, it’s very difficult to find friends with my values and way of life, I’m so glad I found your channel, I would love to see a part two, thank you.💖

I agree with the increasingly disturbing mainstream media content everywhere and often aimed at our children, it’s effects either intended or non intended normalize amoral actons/behavior and make the world an uglier place. My eyes have been open to this for a while after having a daughter I struggled to even find clothing for a 7 yr old that was appropriate and I am being kind here, the clothing was something else. That is just one of many examples

Oh, my goodness, I think this topic could become its own channel! Lol! Jennifer, I believe you and I are about the same age (I turned 42 in August). In my late 30's, I had this strong urge to just pull away from more worldly, material things, I guess you could say? Once I turned 40, that feeling increased and I definitely was not afraid to turn 40 -- I had the feeling you mentioned from a quote about entering my prime. I think all the things you discuss - turning inward - is about rediscovering our HUMANITY and our worth in the eyes of God. It is definitely more spiritual than material in nature. I think once we are honest about the way God made us and acknowledge our strengths and weaknesses, then we gain more confidence in who we ARE rather than who we are not and it frees us up to be more passionate about life and the things we love and are drawn to. And then, all of that confidence and passion draw other people to us with similar interests and passions, which help us cultivate truer, deeper friendships that last. I love this topic because it is where I am at! Looking forward to more on this topic! ♥️

Yes, x5. Everything you mention I have experienced in the past several months. I turned 40 in August and I have so enjoyed finding my passions again, having more confidence in myself and my individuality, being more compassionate toward others, learning more about the Lord and growing my relationship with Him…all that you mention, and more. I love to see that you are experiencing these things, too, and that you find it important to share these things with others to encourage us. Thank you for being a light in a dark world and an example of an elegant and deeply satisfying life. Much love from Texas!

Many thanks for this encouraging video. I completely agree with you - at age 46 I have experienced my own transition starting around age 39. These have been the happiest years of my life! I feel like I’ve finally grown up and started taking care of my inner self, discovered new passions (running, violin, new types of literature) and decided what kind of person I want to be - with no care if it’s popular or trendy. I think a lot of this has to do with considering that my life at this point may be halfway over, not to be morbid, but to use that as a way of monitoring how I’m spending my time. I really appreciate your classy attitude and inspiring thoughts! I look forward to your videos and would love to listen to more on this topic!

Between the age of 10 and 35 or 40 I wrote hundreds of poems, a novel, did many oil paintings, watercolour, drawings, embroideries, sports.... and then it stopped. I've adored being a wife, a mother, a daugther, a daughter-in-law, a friend, a teacher, and was so grateful for all these blessings, but at the same time I didn't see how trying to be perfect everywhere drained most of my energy when it came to inspiration and just being me. Even when I had a little free time, I would spend it in ways that didn't really express me, like watching TV or going window-shopping on Saturdays. Now, 2 decades later, I am re-discovering myself, my creativity and a new freedom (in spite of lockdowns). Thank you so much for the monthly assignments, they are such a treat, so interesting and... pure joy! :)

This really hits home for me right now. Thank you, Jennifer. I'm going to be turning 28 on Thanksgiving, and this whole year I've felt this pull in two directions; to conform to what is accepted in most of society and among my friends and acquaintances, or to really embrace who I am and who I want to be. It's been difficult, as I've questioned everything about myself, because so many people have either been disapproving of, or disinterested in everything I value and enjoy in life. And I have been praying that God will bring like minded people into my life. So far I have you, Jennifer, and the Connoisseur community, and one online friend from across the world. I'd love to find more people in person, but I'm immensely grateful for the inspiration and beauty that has been brought into my life by your channel the past couple of years.

I live in the Appalachian area which I am so proud of, but I never really learned a lot of the things you talk about in your book. I am now starting to think about what I wear, do I look presentable before I go out, and expanding my vocabulary. I do wear T-shirts and workout pants every day because I am a stay at home wife. My excuse was no one ever sees me but my husband. Reading your book has showed me how much certain things affect your mood and your life. Thank you so much for these books and all you do! I am a work in progress but I am getting closer to being the woman I want to be.
